Here ya go, Judy, look at this video. They are not born in the pouch the little fella has a climb ahead of him (or her!) when born....they crawl up mom's belly and into the pouch.

Joeys are not born in the pouch - they have to climb in.

The young is born 33 days after mating. To get ready for the birth of the joey, the female will lick the pouch clean, and lean up against the base of a tree, resting on her hindquarters with her tail passed between her hind legs.

The baby Kangaroo is hairless and tiny, barely the size of a peanut, and weighing less than a gram (Once inside the pouch, the miniature joey attaches itself to one of the 4 teats. It will suckle exclusively from this one teat until it is weaned.

Same as possums...marsupials. When you look at a male possum's belly, you can see the way the skin lays, that if he was a female, the pouch would be there. If I knew where my camera was, I'd show you a picture. Possums are born as 13 day old embryos, climb into the pouch and attach to one of 13 teats. I have only seen one possum that had 13 babies. As many as 50 or more may be born, but there is room for only 13. The most usual number I see is 7, although I have seen 10 a few times. It's quite miraculous, when you think about it, and they are probably one of the most prolific creatures on earth and have been around for about 70 million years. All that, and most of them won't live longer than a year. Two years is old and three years is ancient and four years, almost unheard of. They grow their entire lives and if they live long enough, to die from old age...like in captivity...they will most likely die from congestive heart failure. See...more than you ever wanted to know about possums...but even though they are an extremely common animal, most people know nothing about them.

Pugs are not born with curly tails. Their tails are straight, and they hold them curled up.

They usually tend to curl them one way or the other, and you can tell their mood by the shape of their tail! If Ruby is holding her tail in an "s" along her back she is feeling sassy!

Ruby curls her tail flat against her back, and Max curls his like a cinnamon bun on it's edge. When they are asleep their tails are straight.

When my daughter was in 6th grade the teacher gave her a Gerbil to bring home at the end of the year. Little did we know that it was pregnant....LOL.. Within a week we had 7 more and they continued breeding until she had 27 in a 10gal aquarium. Thinking they were a bit over populated she got another aquarium and put a couple in it,,and guess what, within a couple weeks we had 7 more,,then another 7 and so forth until there was about 25 to 30 in that aquarium, but there was always 7 in the liter, or so we thought.

To her credit Jessie took this project on as a science project. She got a gram scale and she weighed all the infants at birth, then every other day for three weeks, and she kept careful records. After nearly a year and a colony that had now grown to 18 aquariums and about 250 Gerbils she concluded that:

1.In a new colony there is always 7 in a litter and they have almost a 100% survivabilty rate.

2. they double their birth weight every 48 hrs for the first two weeks.

3.As the population of a colony begins to reach about 1/2 saturation they continue breeding and having 7 per litter, but there are usually two to three still born.

4.When the population is nearly at maximum saturation they only have 4 per litter and about 30% are still born.

5.When the colony reaches saturation they stop breeding entirely, but if you remove a few, they will instantly start breeding again.

6. Only the Gerbils know what the saturation population is for their colony. In some 10gal aquariums they might maintain the population at 25 while in another they might maintain 35, but whatever population they decide is where they will stay.

7.If you take a Gerbil out of one colony and drop it into another colony they will immediately kill the stranger.

8. If you reduce the amount of food they will immediately begin killing off the old or weak ones.

During the second year of her study she went to the science dept at our local state college and discussed her project with one of the professors. The professor was so impressed with her study that he used to stop by our house every couple months to discuss it with Jessie.

Jessie continued her study for the next 6 yrs and in her Senior year of High School she won first place in the county in the Science Fair.

Jessie is now 30yrs old and she has a Masters Degree in Environmental Science and is working in a Federally funded research lab.....not bad for a kids silly grade school project.

I knew the story about the birth (and travels) of baby kangaroos and possums. My original Q was, I always picture Kangaroos with that pouch on their bellies, and then it was asked on that TV show is, do males have a pouch too. That really peaked my interest. I like to read about these little and sometimes odd facts about animals. Heck, maybe there ares some out there about us humans. Thanks for all who have shared their knowledge with us. Any more?

Verey interesting fact. Then can someone explain why men have nipples?

Jannie,,,not only do men have nipples, there is an extremely rare condition where mens breasts can produce milk but male nipples have no openings to drain the milk off and as a result it can be a life threatening situation because when it happens men can become septic from Milk Fever.

I heard if a man has any "leakage" from a nipple it can be a sign of cancer. Of course men can get breast cancer.
