Old Biddie forum???

I didn't want to hijack SamKaren's thread but want to express my opinion of the remark about this being known as the old biddie forum. I am probably one of the older posters here (Im 68) and I know that my stance on some things is considered old school by some younger posters and that is OK. I think the differing opinions, life styles, ages, area of residence, faith etc are all things that add to the interesting discussions here. I would hope that I would accept others for who they are and even if I don't agree with them enjoy their posts and ideas. I have felt such kindness and caring from the posters here and they have helped me through some rough times regardless of their age or lifestyle. Satine

Chi_girl is young (in her 30's) and Seniorgal is in her 90's.
A lot of people here are retired and there are still a number of us working and not retirement age. There are accountants, lawyers and professions of kinds here, and there is something to be learned from all of us.

I first came here when I asked a question about baking bread in my bread-maker. I got immediate and friendly responses and have stayed.

I've learned a LOT from this forum. Any posts that don't interest me, I don't ready or respond. I'm seldom snarky.

There are so many different forums here and there's something interesting for everyone. I noodle on the Kitchens forum when something in the sidebar catches my eye, but I have absolutely *nothing* to contribute as I don't have that kind of money to spend on kitchen appliances nor am I gutting to spend 10's of thousands of dollars on a kitchen. When I asked about that ugly dead space in my corner cabinet, I asked the question here, not over at that forum.

I do hang out at the Cooking Forum, and post recipes and pictures and I'm not remotely close to cooking like many of the members there, nor is my photography even in the same atmosphere of theirs much less in the same ballpark!

As far as anyone being rude or looking down on people who have less than professional-looking photos, I have never, ever seen that here. My pictures of my flowers today aren't all that great, but that doesn't stop me from sharing.

People can be snotty, snobby and arrogant in all walks of life, and GW is certainly no different.

Thanks Marilyn. I know that members did talk about this forum, and members here at one time. Maybe things have changed. I don't remember the name of the forum at all, Shelgal. Another forum that has every kind of topic is http://www.city-data.com/forum/ I haven't had the time to check it out thoroughly yet.

Tracy, Mark, Rick, thank you for your kind words. There are good days and bad days, today was good, I was at work and that keeps my mind occupied. Once I can get my broken telephone line and therefore my internet sorted I will be able to stay on-line for more than a few seconds at a time and get something done but it's a slow process! Gill UK

What do we want the old house forum to be?

    Q

    Comments (32)
I don't consider anything after 1940'ish to qualify as an old house. And a house built after 1940 is 75 years old and a house built in 1965 is 50 years old. Not considering something of this age worth discussing, or thinking that something 50-75 years old is open game for gut renovation every time because it's not old is exactly the mentality that ruined so many Victorian and Edwardian houses in the 1950s. I don't believe every house has to be maintained as a time capsule. I dont believe any house really is ever a complete time capsule unless it's a museum. But there has to be a point when one asks oneself why XYZ is not worth saving and needs to be replaced with whatever is current no matter how bad it looks in the house. (And people don't think it's bad until later and its not the latest thing any more). There are enough options out there that a new kitchen or bath could look completely compatible with almost any age of house, without necessarily trying to be a period recreation, and without breaking the bank. Daltile ceramic or porcelain tiles in basic sizes cover the bases for practically any period of bathroom from after about 1920 and if you are okay with non rectified subway, you can do a compatible bath from before 1920. The Old House forum should at the very least support those who want to restore and renovate compatibly with their older houses instead of leaving them to the vagaries of fashion in the general Kitchen and Bath forums. I don't think this necessarily has to be a forum for complete purists--I don't think it is now, but apparently some people do (?). Many people may beg to differ but I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to maintain or recreate something from as recently as the 1980s. There is really nothing "wrong" with some of it, Late- and Post-Modernism can be kind of interesting. It's just that most people hate with with the same knee jerk reaction that they hate anything that they think is too old Not to hate and too new to not look back on as just another period in design history.

how do we find the old forums?

I think I have added 284 forums to my "Your Topics" because I want nearly every garden forum! Hope I can still add some "THS" forums as well. It seems like the system kept trying to force topics on me, especially Design Dilemma.

    What's an old biddie?

I dunno. I'm not one of the older posters, but I am definitely old school. One of my friends has a saying that sums up my feelings. "If you don't have morals, then at least have some standards you go by." Some discretion would certainly be nice. There are topics that are just not appropriate topics of conversation. Being open minded or respectful doesn't mean you have to accept low class behavior.

As far as "Old Biddies" go, I looked at one of the other group's board one time and found it pretty tasteless. That forum was watching this forum so they could swoop in and stir the pot. Why? If you don't like it, then move on. There is no need to be spiteful and petty.

Where are all these forums that people are talking about?

67 here so I qualify too...those of us that enjoy it will stay, those that don't will go...I don't care what others call it.

Yes, I have also seen it referred to as the Old Biddies Forum. It can get rough around here from time to time. It seems like meanies come and go. Can you all remember how Glenda couldn't even post a "hello" without getting beat up on? Seems like you can go for months and months without seeing the evil side, then suddenly the meanness shows itself again. I seldom post here anymore but do read and post occasionally.

You all think this forum get evil and mean - just go over and read the Hot Topics forum sometimes. My word, talk about being eaten alive, regurgitated, spit out, slapped around and then swallowed again! I like a good spirited, respectful and decent discussion, but over there, well...............

I really like you folks over here even though I probably haven't posted here but maybe twice.

The only thing I have to say is that an "old biddie" does not have to be old. If you know what I mean. They are everywhere.....on other forums, on facebook, etc. LOL!

You're only as young as you feel! And I for one do not feel my age (52). As long as there is something that makes you smile (or better yet) or blush once a day then life is good.

I suppose to my kids I'm an old biddie (55) but on here I think I'm in the middle. We can all be judgmental at times.

What?!! This is something people say?! Wait...

Nope. Didn't find it one time. I did search. Biddy/Old Biddy/Old Biddies/Biddies. Not one was in reference to this forum. So who's saying it???

On the Hot Topics Forum you'll find arguments about issues rather than unfounded, vicious accusations & personalized savagery.

If a Hot Topics poster called someone an adultress or referred to a menage-a-trois that the OP never mentioned, or referred to the dissolution of a marriage as abandonment of sacred vows, that poster would face a barrage of articulate, well-worded, well-deserved criticism.

For bloodthirsty mob mentality on the other hand, see Kitchen Table.

"biddie" is a state of mind. Some people are closer to it than others, regardless of age.

So people on the "secret forum" are calling people on the KT old biddies? Isn't that pretty darned judgmental and snooty? Why would anyone, any nice, kind person, associate there?

Sounds like Jr. High Schoolers to me. Oh, I visited that other forum a few times (can't remember even where it is now), and there were several from the KT over there, participating. I didn't care for that forum and stopped going. My membership has probably been revoked by now.

It's fine - to each their own. I don't agree or disagree with everything here. But I do agree that there can be "biddies" at every age and in every environment. Those who enjoy dissing other people, wherever you may primarily reside online, are not people I'd welcome into my world, just as I didn't welcome you into my world when I was in Jr. High. 'Course, you won't care; instead you'll just continue to make fun of us.

"So people on the "secret forum" are calling people on the KT old biddies? Isn't that pretty darned judgmental and snooty? Why would anyone, any nice, kind person, associate there?"

Some people have such low self esteem that they try to boost themselves up by putting down others.
I don't think that is a healthy approach.

People calling other people "old biddies" is just the pot calling the kettle black. What a hoot!

Let me make sure I understand this correctly.

Making comments using the veiled anonymity of the internet only makes you an "old biddie" if your comments are disparaging? If your comments are positive and uplifting, what does that make you?

A "gentle person" would never say anything disparaging to a persons face? Nope; we tell them what they want to hear and then gossip behind their backs. Coffee klatches, gin rummy/mahjongg/pinochle gatherings were designed for gossip. Maybe the "other forums" view the KT as a Coffee Klatch. Whatever.....I'm sure those folks are head and shoulders above everyone else in the Internet pecking order. *snark*

To me, an "old biddie" is someone who spends waaaay too much time concerning themselves with how other people live their lives. Yeah, there are some folks like that but honestly, they are everywhere.

In short, how other people choose to live their life is nobody's business. Heck, if you were to judge me by my answers to the daily Trivia Question, you'd think all I did all day was think about sex. I'll let you all chew on that for a while! ;)

    Old biddies unite! :D

Sticks and stones can hurt our bones, but names will never hurt us. If someone classifies me as an old biddy, (soon to be 75) so be it. I just give thanks every day to be given another day of life. Age doesn't matter, it is how you live each day you are given, each day and year are precious blessings.

Sylviatexas - you go to a different Hot Topics forum than I do. Those people are vicious to one another. When a topic starts you know exactly when and how it will deteriorate and the script that will be followed.

And it will usually be derailed by someone bringing up Benghazi.

blfenton - Thank goodness someone else sees the same thing I do on Hot Topics.

Hmmm when my first cat died. Mom gave me and my then-hubby $50 to plant a tree in her memory.

We'd already had a large maple in our backyard, plus pines and wandering flowerbeds so no room for another tree.

We saw an ad for a cat and we went to look at it and we brought him home. He cost $50.

On the way home, hubby wondered what we should call him, as we didn't care for the name that he had.

Hubby said we should name him after my mom. I said you want to call him "Norma!!???" He said......No, Biddy......for the Old Biddy.

Mom loved Biddy and thought that was the funniest thing. Hubby loved my mom and meant it in a loving/joking way. He never thought she was an "old biddy."

Flamingo.........your comment nailed this whole issue right on the head!!

I've found that for the most part, discussions forums seem to be comprised of mostly older people and mostly women. I'm sure the subject matter differs such as on the cosmetics forums I find there to be mostly really young girls/women. If it were about automotive stuff it would be mostly men I would think.

I never go to the hot topic forums because when I went to see what it was about, I found nothing of any interest to me. Mostly haggling.

I would consider myself to be an old biddy, I really don't care what they'd think. I'm opinionated and that's just who I am, as I age, I think I get more set in my ways. I'm only 51. I've learned things just from living that a kid in their 20s or 30s simply cannot know yet, they have not lived long enough. On the other hand, a woman (or man) in their 80s would know way more than I know! And would probably know a better way of doing something that I'm doing all wrong. :)

BIDDIE? Cool!! Never saw the reference before, and not worth worrying about. I read posts based on the words, not the age of the brain they come from. Lots of them are skipped over. For some, forums are a 'lonely hearts' escape, they have nothing else to do. It's the internet, do what you want.

We're a bunch of old biddies? I had no idea. Of course I know how old I am (59) but I didn't realize so many here were my age or older. I thought most were younger than me.

Now, thinking back about old posts by some of you who have told us your age, I'm impressed how young you act. Or, maybe I should be depressed that MY OWN thinking is much more old-biddie than most of you.

And I'm also surprised by samkaren's age (52). I'm only 7 years older than her, but my thinking/attitudes/lifestyle are probably 20 years older.

    Thanks, jasdip. :)

I'm 57 and happy with my age, (mostly) content with my life and glad that I seem to have lots of common sense.

I may be an old biddie (85) but quite a few of my granddaughter's college friends have asked to be my Facebook friend from reading my posts to her, so I guess I'm not too old biddy-ish.

When I was growing up, my uncle had a big farm, and on that farm were lots of chickens. My uncle used to call the older hens, past the egg-laying age, 'old biddie hens' because they kept the rest of the hens in turmoil, chasing and pecking at them - they were often turned into chicken and dumplings.

    U-OH, I hope I don't get turned into chicken and dumplings...HEEHEE!

70 here, and recently discovered the TABLE. I like that there is no category specified... and that opinions can be solicited. Anonymity provides for honesty, something that I feel a 'kitchen table' talk ought to offer. A recent post of mine helped me to look a bit differently at a situation. I found myself moderating certain critical thoughts regarding family... a good thing. I like it here...

Someone needs to print up some GWOB (Garden Web Old Biddy) t shirts. Great conversation starter (although there's never a lack of great conversations here).

~I want one of those t-shirts. Perhaps they should be purple.

Snidely is right, His answer is well thought out.

"Labels don't matter, but my impression is that there's not too much demographic diversity among the regulars here."

That's an interesting assumption, Snidely and Ellie, and my assumption is that you're not accurate. Care to describe the demographic as you perceive it? Do you include yourselves in that demographic?

Not trying to make any point at all; I'm just curious as to how differently (or how much alike) folks at this forum are perceived to be.

Good afternoon from a white, married 44 yrs, retired, 75 year old "ole biddy" who is thankful for another day of life and wishes you all a wonderful day.

I agree with sylviatexas, with the exception to add "mostly married or widowed" and to say I'm not sure what difference one's race makes. To that, I'll suggest that compared to the "average American" (whatever that is), the following are overrepresented here:

Those who live in the Midwest and South.

Those who live in or near small towns or rural areas.

You can call me an Old Biddy...I'm just glad to be walking, talking and posting.

Guess i'm an old biddie as well and proud of it.I'm 76,and i'm thankful for everyone of those 76 years, and learned a lot along the way.I wouldn't change it for the world.

I like all the different opinions on this board, and don't care how old or young anyone is,as long as you're plesant and kind, that's what matters.

I'm soon to be 71 and old biddie or not, I'll always regret going off and being ugly b.tchy to a couple of dear ladies here. Have never forgiven myself, but still like to visit my KT family...young and old.

The people on this forum are the nicest people. I have met Glenda, Linda and Bee at get-to-gethers, also a few others. I don't post much but I do love to read what others post, I have learned so much from other people's experiences. I can't believe people jumped all over Glenda, she is the nicest lady you would ever want to meet. BTW, if Glenda sees this I would like her to email me @ elaineinnj@yahoo.com

I didn't read all of these. Old biddy forum. Funny. But I don't go to other boards. Just facebook. So, who really cares? Thanks Jasdip, that was a cute story !

I agree with Tally!!! And kat! "who really cares"?

Guess I am a young biddie, turned 40 one week ago, bringing the average age down for everyone. And I have been here nearly 14 years! So I was 26 when I was searching for Wedding information. Wondered why there was an entire section dealing with kitchen tables so I checked it out!
