How I spent my 72nd birthday!

First, grandson, Parke, gave me a 3 page handwritten letter expressing his feelings for me. Talking about tears of happiness!

Lunched at a Mexican restaurant.

This was the better of the two pics.

I'm proud to say I had a wonderful special birthday with my grandson and I am thankful for the KT birthday wishes.

Aw, Glenda! That picture is a keeper for sure--how sweet it was of Parke to write you a special letter. Make my throat develop a small lump for some reason.

Laura, I've been meaning to write ingredients to rid Mites. Sorry, I didn't get to it sooner. Everytime I was about to, something came up. :) I've used this recepie so many years, I no longer measure. But, adding a little more of this or that won't harm a plant. That is, all but Fish Emulsion. I'll get to that. The night before spraying, I fill (about 3/4ths full) a 16-20oz spray bottle w/warm water and add 1-2 cloves of peeled garlic. Following Day: 1/4-1/2 teas Hot Pepper. 2-4 drops Dish Soap, 'Not Dawn.' 1/4-1/2 teas orange/lemon/lime or grapefruit juice. As a preventative or to kill Scale, and some other types of insects, 1 capful of Fish Emulsion. Mix thoroughly before spraying plants. Spray under and upper leaves, stems, and trunk. This mix can be kept for weeks, but shake the bottle so ingreients are even. Fish Emulsion: To prevent/kill Scale, in addition to above ingrdients, I add 1 cap of Fish Emulsion. WARNINGS: Leftover insecticide w/FE should be discarded. Fish Emulsion has a fishy odor. The smell can last 1-3 days. Although I'm not thrilled about the odor, I'd rather deal with it a few days, than find Scale on my plants. Since FE is organic there's no need to worry about inhaling or pores. It's totally harmless, won't burn roots/leaves. BTW, use a new or well-made spray bottle. Old bottles, especially when used frequently, don't work as well, or can drip. I used to use peeled citrus rind, but the peels clogged up spray bottle. In its place I use citrus juice. Mostly Lemon. The lemon that comes in a yellow plastic, lemon-shaped container. Preferably unsweetened. The same thing happened w/garlic. I used to chop 1-2 cloves, but pieces clogged sprayer top. BTW, before adding garlic to water, I squeeze each clove in water bottle so liquid blends in. Toss in squeezed garlic cloves, too. Hot Pepper. I've been using Cayenne Pepper powder, but any hot pepper will do...the hotter the better. These ingredients deter and kill Mites. Mites dislike the scents, so they steer clear. Eish Emulsion prevents and kills Scale. A friend who owns a Citrus nursery in Fl told me they use FE on ALL their citrus to keep Scale away. Not long after she told me about FE, I ordered an Olive Tree. It was delivered at night. I set it between two Citrus trees. While misting, I noticed a brown lump on a leaf. Taking a closer look, the entire Olive was Scale-packed. Not to mention the closest citrus branches. I phoned her to get the exact Fish Emulsion dossge. The Olive and Citrus were first isolated then sprayed. Within two days, all signs of Scale were gone. Since spraying, none of my plants had this awful bug. Ever. This happened, I believe, 1999. That's it. Spraying every other week should keep Mites at bay. (without FE) BTW, Fish Emulsion is an organic fertilizer. I spray plants w/the complete mixture before coming indoors for winter. Not only to keep insects away, but a last foliar feeding. If a plant is budding or flowering, don't spray, or refrain from hitting buds and flowers. Anyway, this recepie works for my plants. Considering the amount of plants I have, and each from diferent nurseries, I either have a Plant Angel or plain lucky..lol. Give it a try..can't hurt. I avoid chemicals, 'except a few fertilizers.' I'm a viniculturist, but I have thoughts on soil management. A soil with high pH 'locks in' iron and potassium, so using ammonium sulphate in solution for short time or sulphur for permanentcy will increase the acid level. For any magnesium deficiency use a tablespoon of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts. g.). For tomatoes I use 5-10-10 at planting then osmocoat when the fruit are as big as golf balls plus an ounce of Amm. Sulphate. (My soil is 7.4 pH.). As for umbrellers, gentlemen farmers work for prizes at the County Fair, as opposed to commercial growers. (grin again)

Well, I have tried every thing and nothing worked. Not even the recommened mixes from here or bagged ones. Every single orchid I have in my growing warm room has just about lost all their roots. I almost lost them all. So frustrating. So what I did was explain the growing conditions to a few orchid experts at the orchid show and they told me that I have to fine tune and figure out which mix works best for my conditions. That there is no magic mix or bullet or one size fits all. I had to unpot every Phal I have because the roots were drying out just much too fast. I did not have the time to 'soak' every one of them in order for the roots to hydrate properly again, so I tried something not many would use. Just plain ole sphagnum moss. Well, this seems to have done the trick. All I have to do is re wet it and all the roots have time to hydrate, they turn a rich green, and then the mix dries out within a couple of days in that room. I don't pack it tight, but just enough so that the roots are stable in the pot and wow, what a difference!! Now they are growing gang busters. Same with my Oncidiums and Cattaleya in that room. Almost all the roots were dead or dried out and never enough time to mist them every day or soak them as frequently or as long as I'd like to hydrate the roots. So I now use half sphagnum/ half smaller bark, and some perlite. I cut the sphagnum and mix this all together. So far so good. The roots are coming back. It takes me much less time to water or have to hydrate the roots. It will be on to my 'greenhouse' ones since I can only water them in the early a.m. They are in huge bark chunks and the roots get so dry before I can get to them by the next morning. If I miss a day, forget it. I don't have misters that can consistently spray them and keep that greenhouse from getting that hot, but if I find that my mixes of bark and more sphagnum do the trick, I will use that. It seems my orchids require more sphagnum in my mixes to grow to their full potential. Have you had to play around with mixes until you got what works for you? Mike

What a wonderful birthday! Please keep that letter in a safe place so that one day, GS will look back on it and remember the love he shared with his Grandma.

When I was about 11 or 12, I wrote an essay for English class on the person I admired most--my grandmother. I got an "A" on it, and sent it to my grandmother. When she passed, it was with her important papers, along with a number of letters I had written to her through the years. They bring back wonderful memories of someone I loved dearly.

Glenda,,,if you put your cursor on that picture and right click your mouse a box will drop down, then hit "copy"

You can then go to the lower left of your screen and hit "Start", when the start menu comes up put your cursor on "My pictures" and hit "Paste" and it will put that pic in your computer picture files, then you can keep it in file or you can print it too.
