Would it have something to do with the stop light signals? Maybe the signals would get messed up with the cell phones in use.

You should be paying attention to traffic, not talking or texting.

I would think it is to keep the kids from bringing their phones to school. Bobby is in High School and if they are caught using or if the teacher see your cell phone they are confiscated and the parent has to go to the office to get it back.

"No Cells Phones . . ." Perhaps it was posted by the same elementary school that had a huge sign up wishing everyone a "Merry Chirstmas" last December.
No reason for the sign that I can think of, but it is a great idea! Wonder if I can get a couple for the entrance and exit from town.

There was a piece on the national news about it. Kids on cell phones don't pay attention in crosswalks and were in danger of getting hit. I'm sure that applies to all people, child or not but they can only control kids!

A teen in our area was hit by a car while in a crosswalk- she was talking on her cell phone. Another bicyclist was hit and killed by a car in my own town. The 16 year old had ear phones on and was trying to adjust his I Pod and accidentaly swerved right into the car. And I think it was in New York- a girl was testing and fell into an open manhole.

So yes- we all need to pay attention.

I'm sure the crossing guards get tired of telling every other kid to get off the phone when crossing the street. The sign probably doesn't 'reach' all of them, but if it makes the crosswalk safer, and the crossing guard's life easier, good

Wow, makes perfect sense to have all of your ears and eyes on the road when crossing. I am assuming that it means the cars in the area too? If not, it should. There is no light there as it is a very back road, only a stop sign, and a school signal that flashes during certain periods during the day to slow traffic.

Here in E TX, some school districts have decided to institute a ban against cellphones in school zones beginning Sept 1st. I think it's a good idea, but wonder if it will also eliminate when I'd arrive to school early to pick up my son and call somebody to yack while waiting in my car.

We have a message posted at the entrance driveway to the private school where I teach (grades 1-8). It says "Please, no cell phone use!" and is intended for both kids and the parents driving in to drop off their children. It is far too congested to allow anyone to be distracted during those drop off and pick up times. When I am on duty during pick up or drop off, I often have to remind drivers about the rule. Yet I know any parent would suffer tremendous guilt if they were to hit someone. You'd think it would just be common sense, but we are so used to the convenience of multi-tasking, we sometimes just don't think!

I'd like to see it at all crosswalks, not just at schools. I can't tell you how many times I've had "mothers" on cells push their baby's stroller right into traffic while chatting away. People don't seem to understand that shopping carts,strollers etc. are in the street before they themselves step out. Cell phone distraction makes it even worse.

twinklenose, it was in the news today (had to tell DH, who travels the state for work) that starting 9/1, NO handheld cell phones allowed in school zones. $200 fine. Entire state of Texas. One of our local ISD's instituted the phone ban end of last school year & racked up some big bucks in fines.

Personally I have to congratulate New Jersey. Hand held cell phone use while operating a vehicle is banned everywhere in the state. Now compliance is an entirely different matter- I wish I could issue tickets to those people who disregard the law.

I think it's a great idea too. Should be on every crosswalk.

I wish my son's school would post a sign that says no talking to your children once they exit the car. Irritates me especially since they've been driving together for the past 20 minutes.

In my opinion, all cellphone use in public should be illegal. It's a nuisance, distraction, etc. Okay for emergencies, but not for chit-chat.

I am in Fort Worth.
I rarely take my cell out of the house, unless I am expecting a really important call, or I am headed out of town. Talking and driving is way too hard for me.
Cell phones drive me nuts in any store. It seems to me if you can't go long enough without socializing, stay home.
Worse yet, are those who cannot make a decision and are depending on the cell for help. ARRRGGG!!!
