Coffee maker recall...Yippie!

Hi Kids,

I was just in the process of getting a post together here, asking all of you who drink coffee what type of coffee makers you all have. I have a GE drip that is only 1 year old that makes awful, awful, AWFUL coffee. I did a search to get the full name of it only to find that it has been recalled! YES!!! I have hated this thing since day one. For the life of me I could not get a good cup of coffee out of it. Now I find that I will be given a replacement if I return it to Walmart. I just hope it's not another GE. The model number on it is: 169-164.

Now my question...what type of coffee makers do all of you have and do you like them? Perk? Drip? I have had both types and have had great coffee from both. I had a Farberwear Insta-fast (?) for 27 years that was great. I had a Melitta Perfect Time drip for several years which also made great coffee. This morning I made coffee using a Melitta filter and filter cone made directly over/into my mug...it was the best cup of coffee I have made in months.

So...what do all of you have and would you buy it again? Thanks Kids.

Not sure of a brand, but I recommend getting a black one because they don't look stained like the white ones.

We've used Bunn coffee makers for many years and have been very pleased with them. I think this is our third one in over twenty years.

I actually do remember the dripolator - my mother had one! Then my parents got divorced and I think my mother switched to instant. She wasn't a coffee lover and with two kids who didn't drink it, it wasn't worth it to her to bother making coffee. Like Annie's husband, we prefer Chemex-style drip. I don't use the Chemex glass coffeepot any longer. I prefer to use a smaller regular glass pot (5 cups and under when we're drinking it right away) or a Japanese vacuum thermos for 6+ cups (holds it for around 7 hours). I have a white porcelain cone but do use the Chemex filters. They make a definite difference in the quality of the coffee. The paper filters (Melitta is the most common brand) make vastly inferior drip coffee. Especially if you like strong coffee - we use either French or Italian roast in a super-fine grind (one notch above Turkish powdered) - the Chemex filters are great. They never break apart (they're woven and then folded for packaging) the way the paper ones do.

Anyone have Cuisinart Coffee on Demand 12 Cup Coffee Maker?

We have had one for almost two years. It is OK, but the tradeoff for a glass carafe is a bulky square of plastic. It takes up a lot of room in the dishwasher. My husband insists on using the gold tone filter, which just means another thing to clean - I prefer the ease of throwing out a paper filter. We have noticed that the coffee is drinkable right as you pour a cup. That seems like a good thing, but it means that the holding temp is kind of low. Hence this Christmas present to the husband: Here is a link that might be useful: Coffee Cup Warmer

Fruit flies on my coffee maker out of nowhere
Q

Let me tell you my tale of woe which is still increasing my blood pressure even tonight. For the past 5 days, my house has been inundated with some type of small flies; maybe drain flies, but I have a coffee angle as well. This morning, I used the foot peddle on a plastic Rubbermaid trash receptacle in the kitchen........there must have been at least 25 in the garbage and many flew out all over my kitchen and dining room. I had noticed most seeming to come from the kitchen sink/drains, so I used the foaming disposal/drain cleaner at least twice, but that had no impact. I made coffee as usual this morning, using my Cuisinart 12-cup coffee maker, although I just make one cup and use paper filters and some organic ground coffee. I didn't really look "into" the coffee maker this morning, but I had just run vinegar and water through it the other day for the auto-clean cycle, which it really needed. Like some others in this thread have mentioned, I don't think that the standard cleaning touches every opening within the coffee maker where moisture may be allowed to linger. Later in the day, it appeared that many of these flies were around my coffee maker........to my horror, when I opened the lid on top, there must have been 15 or 20 inside the coffee maker. Even after I rinsed it out and attempted to dry it off, more flies were landing on it. It was like a horror film. I tried putting into two plastic grocery bags, since I didn't have a single bag big enough, and I shortly realized that there were flies getting into the bags like the coffee maker was a magnet. I then cleaned the coffee maker in the sink, and cleaned the canister as well and hand dried each and put the coffee maker into two other plastic bags and put it in my home office at the other end of my house. I put the canister in a separate bag and tied the top and did the same with the basket. (as I type this, there are flies landing on my hands and arms......Alfred Hitchcock can't be far away) I would guess that I have killed about 100 of these flies in the past 4 days and still am not entirely sure where they came from, but I have read that drain flies breed and hatch every 48 hours and I seem to just keep coming. If these things were in my coffee maker this morning, I must have ingested a lifetime's worth. I seem to have two sizes of these flies and the only way to kill any of them is when the land on the counter. When they are flying, it is extremely hard to kill them. I believe they are attracted to carbon dioxide, because they have flown into my eyes, nose and mouth. They sound like mosquitos when they fly near my ears. I may try the apple cider vinegar and dish soap idea before going to bed shortly, but I'm afraid that I wake up with even more tomorrow. I have read that you can add some sugar to this mixture as well. The dish soap is important. Since I could not eat lunch or dinner today because so many were landing on my food and plates, and I had to throw food away, this is really taking its toll. They are going into my kitchen cabinets and have tried to get into the microwave. I am putting many scraps that might have gone into the garbage into separate bags and tying them off. There is no open food or waste in my kitchen. I even sprayed flying bug spray into the garbage when I discovered the infestation there and it made no difference.....nothing kills these things........help !!! UPDATE: I used two suggestions found online that seem to help. One is to build a simple fly trap using apple cider vinegar and dish soap in a cup/container and put plastic wrap on top, secure with a rubber band and poke some small holes in the top with a toothpick. Flies get in; can't get out. Other thing is the suggestion to use a spray bottle and fill with water and dish soap. You can zap flies when they land somewhere and it makes it easier to kill them. Run water and disposal more frequently to make sure there is no "organic matter" that can attract more flies.

We gave our friends a Cuisinart coffee maker and they love it....they say it is the best coffee maker they have ever had.
(But, of course, the only coffee makers they ever owned were the cheapest ones they could find.)

I had a GE dishwasher recalled and GE installed another GE.

My son had a Starbucks coffee maker recalled and they would only give him another of the same brand.

So before you get all excited and pick something wonderful you might want to find out if you have to stay with GE. Maybe if you're lucky they'll just refund your purchase price and you can pick what you want.

Good luck Maire

We have a Bunn, the one with the stainless carafe. Other than we have to pour it over the sink cause it drips, the coffee is great!

We have a KitchenAid 14-cup coffee maker and love it. We buy all our coffee beans from Maui Coffee Roasters (they're in Maui, Hawaii, naturally!), so we have really goooood coffee. We do have a KitchenAid ProLine burr coffee bean grinder, but it won't get put into use until the Braun burr grinder wears out (and I doubt that will happen any time soon!).

Years ago I used to use a Chemex coffee maker, and really liked, it, too.

I only drink coffee with something, a sweet roll, cake, cookies or Biscotti. I drink instant Kava, it's better on my stomach and tastes great.

I'm one that uses a cheap one. We love our Black and Decker.
Hubby always comments on how good the coffee is. And it's hot.

My parents have a Cuisinart, and I hate it. The measuring lines for the water is on the *inside* of the water reservoir and I can't see when filling it. Just give me the clear window on the side of the machine.

DH uses a Hamilton Beach. Guess he likes it just fine, as we bought the same one for DD for Christmas last year! $19.99. Me, I don't drink the stuff!

I've only had Black and Decker and Mr. Coffee; however, I don't know what's going on because none of mine can even last a year.

Found out just this morning the last Mr. Coffee quit working. My son bought this one for me in March...my first one with a timer on it even tho I never used this feature. It also has an auto shut off which I thought would make it last longer in case I forgot to turn it off. Oh well.

I hesitate to buy a more costly coffee maker as I'm starting they are all jinxed at my house. :(

Just noticed my last sentence above which should've read:
I hesitate to buy a more costly coffee maker as I'm starting **to think** they are all jinxed in my house.

Apparently, I can't **think** without my coffee. LOL

I have a cheapy one. Had Bunn for years and years. I thought they were the best you could have. It broke down and then I just bought what ever was on sale. I go through a lot of coffee makers, we use it daily, 2 to 4 times a day.
My next one will be an electric percolator. Been years since I've had one and ready to try them again.

Our Krups drip coffeemaker with a thermal carafe has lasted about 12 years. (I don't want anything with a heater under the pot.) A good coffee maker has to heat the brewing water adequately. This one uses a paper filter.

On Maui I'll buy Kona beans and grind 'em. At home I like the Melita ground Columbian coffee just fine -- not as mild as Kona, but *much* less expensive. Lindsey, I may move next door to you if you're serving 100% Kona every day! LOL

We have a Hamilton Beach Brew Station.Makes up to 12 cups. The kind without the carafe.Just put your cup up to the spigot and fill.It is programable but we never use that feature. We like it.I also have a Gevalia' like it at home.I like the Gevalia' better. At home I use the beans and grind the coffee myself but we drink so much here(more people)and that can get expensive. We use Folgers or Maxwelhouse here.I like some of the flavored coffee beans but DH just likes plain old coffee so I don't buy flavors very often.DD sends me a rasberry/white chocolate one sometimes.I think she gets it at K-Mart.

Thanks Kids,

Sounds like most of you like your coffee just as much as I do. I was thinking of a Braun or a Cuisinart. I have heard great things about both.

I had two more great cups of coffee this morning using my Melitta cone and filter dripping directly into my mug so, I know I will live. I also found my older Farberwear Insta-perk in the basement. I even found the cord. Happy, happy Day! Both of those will do me until I can get off Cape to find a Walmart. One thing is for sure...I do not want another GE.

So thanks again, Kids. Your input has been helpful. Enjoy!
