Baby Humminbird Rescue Attempt

DH climbed up the ladder and gently tried to disentangle baby from the nesting material. It is so tiny in his big hands! He succeeded in getting it back into the nest, where it lay still for several minutes, causing us a few moments of panic. Since then, Mom has been back to feed it, and it is in an upright position. Still not sure if it is completely freed, but we decided to let it rest, wait and see if it changes position, and if need be, try again. Kep your fingers crossed, OK??

UPDATE:
Keeping my binoculars on the deck so I can watch the progress. Mixed results...DH once again got out the ladder and found that baby is still tangled in the nesting material. Carefully lifted it completely out of the nest, and removed the stringy stuff from it's leg. The leg appears to be injured, however. Don't know if it will be able to survive on it's own. Mom is still faithfully returning to feed it, and it is moving around in the nest. Guess the rest is up to G-d. I know this is part of natures process, but Oh it hurts to know a little one is injured. Thanks for caring.

You should probably consider NOT watering every day. Odds are good it was overwatering that damaged the foliage in the first place. Try using a wood dowel sharpened in a pencil sharpener or a wood skewer stuck deep into the pot to check for moisture. If the stick comes out cool on your wrist, wet, or dirty, withhold water until it comes out with only the slightest hint of moisture. When the soil first feels dry to your touch, the plant can still extract another 10-15% of the moisture still remaining in the soil. You don't WANT to rely on that cush, but it's a good thing to know it's there. Damp or barely moist is your friend. Wet or soggy is a limitation you don't want or need. Al

Excellent news! Neighbor called to say that bird had left the homemade "nest"- it was sitting on a coneflower. We watched it as we weren't sure if it was strong enough to fly. When I moved around to look at the "nest" - it was perched on a near-by shrub - the bird took off! We think we've spotted its true nest in a nearby sycamore tree. Maybe the bird stunned itself this a.m. by flying into sidelight of neighbor's door- the door is about 12-15 feet from where we originally found it.

Done! It was simple. The only problem I had was my own stupidity. I mistakenly clicked on VT instead of VA and the city of Orange. So of course it came up with 0 first. When I corrected that it was fine and came up with 2 results in Orange, VA. I didn't put in the name of the shelter at all. I just chose VA as the state and Orange as the city, then chose Rikki's when the 2 popped up.

An update and a question! Here's my pals two weeks after repotting. I waited 8 days to water (on the 30th) and confirmed that they were dry to the bottom with a chopstick. I'm getting a LOT of yellow, creased bottom leaves like this one: I'm pinching them off as they occur (and throwing them on top of some grit for the science experiment of whether they'll pup). It seems like there might be several things at work, right? - The roots might not be established yet and might not be getting enough water to the leaves (in which case I should definitely leave the plants alone and let the roots establish) - The roots might have rot issues (in which case I should unpot, right?) - The plants might not be getting watered often enough (about every 8 days, fully dry in between) - The soil mix might not be drying fast enough (it's dry in here and the plants are in a spot with air movement, but I wasn't very careful about particle size when I repotted and there's some finer grit and pumice in there). - Sun?? Maybe?? It's been overcast intermittently here; this window gets about 10 - 3 pm sunlight on a good day. The lights I have on them are about 2400 lumens about a foot up, which I suspect is more "better than nothing" than "sufficient for desert plants". It seems like I mostly see problems on here with succulents getting leggy from low sun, though, not creasing/browning. Any thoughts? I'm really enjoying this project, and I've loved reading peoples' posts here!

Susan, Oh I hope it makes it. They're so little. Last year an adult one got it's bill caught in the port hole on my feeder. It was one of those yellow flat flowers. I noticed it just doing what looked like drinking, for the looongest time. So I walked over slowly, put my hand under it's little body, and lifted it up and out. It just sat there for a few seconds, then took off. It was the coolest thing for me.

I've had one-legged hummers come to my feeders. If it survives, it will probably do fine, Susan. I've also had some with broken beaks but they still feed just fine. (I've got sad stories, too, but let's look on the bright side today!)

Hummers use spiderwebs to make their nests stretchy, that's maybe part of what is stuck to it's leg. That stuff is strong, it may be better to snip that instead of pulling on it. Good luck! You're doing great. I'm kind of jealous- all the hummers we get around here and I've never ever spotted a nest.
