Yes they are. My husband's father was very strict about that. He would say if you can't say anything nice about someone don't say anything at all. From my experience it worked for them. I don't judge people who bad mouth's someone or gossips. It takes two to gossip. If someone treats me badly for no reason I will probably tell the world. But if someone tells me something bad about you I will ignore it.

I work in a place like that. Even though there are some people who are annoying, I rarely hear any comments about them. Believe me, it makes a world of difference in the workplace. There is a great deal of tolerance for thye differences among us. I'm sure grumbling goes on, but I rarely hear it, or if I do, it's fleeting and gone fast.

They are delightful...although usually boring, and more often than not, blissfully dumb.

It'd be nice to think they are just really, really, kind people... but I've never yet run into an example of that being the case.

I respect people who know what is ok to talk about and what is not... making fun of someone for something they have no control over, is not nice and shouldn't be done...but not getting involved, or refusing to see or talk about wrongs things in people and the world because you fear confrontation or don't realize it is wrong, doesn't make a good person either.

It is nice to encounter positive people, but I could agree with carla35 sometimes. This reminds me a bit of my late MIL's opinion of most references from clergy: "Useless."

I couldn't agree more with Carla on this one. Nice people are not necessarily good people.

Nice people often say what they think people want to hear.

Good people do and say what needs to be said and done.

This can be done kindly or not so kindly depending on the circumstances. Some people are so thick you sometimes have to appear unkind to get through to them.

There are also a lot of nice people who are mean and bitter on the inside. They just hide behind their "niceness".

Forty years ago I boarded with a sweet old lady who, in her 80s, though fairly shrewd, thought well of people and said so. She didn't have a bitter bone in her body.

She was farily well known in the village, and was universally loved, as well.

I think that, after my divorce, she helped keep me from becoming bitter about women.

Often times, 'nice' people are actually rather passive aggressive.

I'll take real to nice any day! Actually, I prefer the kind, real sorts.

I totally disagree about nice people. My father didn't let us gossip or complain about people. And he was neither ignorant, passive aggressive or dumb. He was truly a kind, loving, patient person and I wish I would've inherited more of that from him.

I try to be nice. I wish everyone I meet a nice day- waitress at the diner, gas station attendant, grocery clerks, etc. Let other cars go first, even if DH is screaming GO! GO! I don't gossip. I have no known enemies.

In my dictionary 'nice' is listed as coming from a Middle English word for 'foolish' and the Old French for 'ignorant'. Yes, it goes on to list other meanings like 'virtuous' and 'respectable' but includes 'prudish'! LOL

I believe it was Alice Roosevelt who said, "If you don't have anything nice to say about somebody, come sit here beside me!"
