Do You Read the Replies?

Just curious - something I've noticed. I'm not judging, just curious.

Often I'll read threads where people will either say "I haven't read the replies, but ...", or they just reply and it's clear from what they say that they haven't read the other replies. Other times, it seems that an OP will probably read the replies but choose not to address different viewpoints.

Again, I'm not judging - but to do any of the above (well, especially the first and second) seems similar to sitting with a bunch of people (oh, hey, perhaps around a kitchen table hee hee), and deciding to not listen to anything beyond what the first couple of people said. Doesn't that, somehow, change the value of the discussion? I mean, if you're going to speak, wouldn't you want to have listened to what everyone else said who spoke before you, to make sure you're on-track, don't repeat something as a new idea when it's been mentioned, or consider what others have said and how it applies?

I know that sometimes the threads are long, and most people don't have time or interest to read them all thru word-for-word. If that's the case, I often scan them all so I know what I'm talking about or choose not to participate if it's gotten too long for me to know the comments.

Again, just curious. Do you read other replies before "speaking"?
