Speaking of recipes..i'm eating crow on this one

Many of you know that I can't stand Rachel Ray.

I was getting my car inspected, and looking thru the magazines available to pass the time. I picked up the Rachel Ray magazine, and saw this recipe for a shrimp/watermelon salad...two things I always have on hand.

When I got home, I checked that I had all the ingredients and made it that night.

We had it for dinner, and the vote was an overwhelming WOW !

Rachel..I still don't like you on TV...but I love this recipe from your magazine..and would eat it with crow on the side.

She kind of wears on my nerves, but I always check the guide to see what she's preparing for that show cos she does have some good, easy, recipes using ingredients I have on hand.

We have no shortage of either crows or blue jays here in the Laurel Highlands of PA. I put bread, pasta or other goody out in the morning and within minutes there are crows in the yard, they must post a sentry to watch for me. The jays love peanuts, we put them in the platform feeder each day and they are gone quickly. I love having the crows around, they act as the guardians of the feeder, chasing squirrels and making sure that the hawks are held at bay. I enjoy watching and listening to them interact, their society seems to be highly structured with many different calls and duties assigned. I love the crows, they are welcome in our yard. We have ponds and water gardens, I also have several lotus pots with standing water in them. I too am concerned about mosquitos and have used dunks for the almost 10 years that we have had the ponds. They won't harm birds or critters sneaking a drink but they will put an end to the larvae.

Taffy, I haven't had trouble with grackles, but have had trouble with house sparrows and squirrels in the past. I did an Internet search for you using "discourage grackles", and found the sort of thing you're looking for. I'm attaching one link. I see one of the common recommendations to discourage grackles is to use safflower seed. I use that now because I was finding my bird feeder on the ground each day thanks to the squirrels. What I've found is both squirrels and house sparrows will eat safflower seed, but I see the house sparrows there very rarely, and the squirrels aren't knocking the feeder to the ground anymore. My favorite feeder bird are chickadees. They eat the safflower seed as do titmice, downies, nuthatches and cardinals. I must admit, when I ran out of safflower seed and used black oil sunflower seed, the birds seemed to enjoy that much more. There are other recommendations I don't have personal knowledge of. I have heard in the past heard of bird feeders for use by small birds only that are controlled by the weight of the bird landing on them, or by being enclosed by a grate. Here is a link to everything you need to know about Ravens. In fact from what it states they will be having it out with some Falcons very soon. That should be very interesting to watch. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/ To locate a crow roosting area just go out at dust or dawn and record the direction the crows are flying. Do this from more than one location then plot all of the direction onto a map. Where all of the lines cross is their roosting area. Wear boots if you plan on walking around in that woods as the ground could be covered a foot deep with their droppings. People have tried using fireworks at night to drive them off but most times they keep coming back. So think twice before you tempt them into hanging around…..

I have stopped and asked a homeowner for the paint color of their house, but I also tell them that my house is several blocks/miles/towns away. I would never ask a direct neighbor, or someone on my block, what color they used so that I could copy it. As far as asking a designer on Houzz to share where something was bought ... some of the items are custom, but most are brands listed as "to-the-trade", that are now, with a bit of searching, also available online. Just like realtors used to have a lock on housing information and designers had one on to-the-trade items, that is no longer true for both industries. When I'm browsing photos I will add in any products that I recognize from my visits to the design center and online searches these last few years.

I don't know what duck sauce is, but the rest sounds great to me. DH won't touch shrimp with a 10 foot pole though.
I like watching Rachel, but I have made many more Paula Deen recipes than Rachels. LOL

Rachel Ray is one my faves. I'd much rather watch her than Giada (can she even GET her lips to meet?) or Nigella (I feel as if I'm witnessing coitus interruptus). But I think I'll pass on that recipe. I don't think I'd like those flavors combined at all.

Nodakgal...duck sauce is that sweet orangey apricot sauce you get with things like egg roll in a chinese restaurant. It's also found in the supermarket with the Chinese food things like soy sauce.

For those who think the recipe sounded disgusting...you should look at the ingredients on some of the dressings and marinades that you buy. You just might not be familiar with making them from scratch. Mixing sweet with hot, and a combination of spices is far from exotic...or disgusting.

Watermelon (and cantaloupe) is being used in many salads and cold soups this summer. We had a fantastic watermelon soup at a restaurant just a week ago. This morning's newspaper had the food section devoted to melons in salads and entrees.

Another Rachel lover here, I make a lot of her 30 minute meals. That sounds good but my hubby would consider it a snack! LOL!!

Sounds fantastic to me . . . I love the 'unexpected' in a dish; the sweet with the salty, the spicy hot with the cool, the zing with the zang, LOL. Most importantly, if you THINK you're not going to like it, you won't. I'm loving my grown kids' changing palates . . . they're enjoying 'new tastes' that I've made for years . . . they're just finally open to them :)

Thanks for the recipe, monica . . . I'm not much of a RR fan either, so I'm sure I never would've seen it!

I enjoy her, she's so cute. But watermelon and shrimp, no thanks.

I've tried and like some of her recipes. The one I like the best is a ground chicken sausage recipe. It's tasty and has less fat than most sausage (I think!).
