There is so much wrong with this scenario. First, they were drinking and driving. Then they threw their garbage in the other truck's bed. Then the slob peeded on someone else's truck! And all of these are supposed to be upstanding citizen's? Several laws were broken here. I guess what I would have done would have been to say something at the time, but that might not have been smart if they were drunk. I suppose you could have called the police. You have to think how your actions will impact your livlihood, I suppose. I was a school board member, and I cannot imagine any of my previous board colleagues behaving in this way.

I would have been totally grossed out and mortified, but I agree with sleeperblues. Nothing you can do about it now. Maybe carry a non-flash camera with you all the time? Otherwise it is your word against theirs.

Personally, I'd probably write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper voicing my concern regarding the lack of acceptable adult behavior on the part of supposed child role models...but...doing so depends on how brave you're feeling. There's no anonymity in that procedure as far as I know. Most newspapers I'm involved with want valid writer identity before they'll print a letter. But, if you can convince your newspaper to print the letter under a "concerned citizen" byline...it might work to every one's benefit.

Yeah, I was going to say you could write a letter to the paper too, but you will have to be prepared for retribution of some sort.

When they saw you did they know who you were? If not, you could write a letter anonymously.

I think I would write a letter directly to the perpetrators and explain to them that I had witnessed the incident but rather than make a public scandal I am appealing to you to take a personal assessment of your conduct and refrain from any future incidents.

I think I'd have called the police/constable/sheriff.

Another thought is that you could contact the school superintendent and inform him about what you saw. I suppose you have no proof that the driver was drinking/driving but I would still notify the superintendent about the actions of some his/her board members. It is an elected position, so you could definitely run against them if you so desired.

I don't think you can change people. And I do think that people who are that blatantly inconsiderate can be vindictive when crossed.

Considering--in your shoes--that they didn't do anything that actually hurt me personally, I wouldn't push my way into this.

I WOULD live my life by my ethics. I would NOT ever vote for any of this bunch. I'd look into clearing a path for moving the business out of the area. In other words, I wouldn't make a big 'stink' about it, but I wouldn't forget about it, either.

If your town is as small as you say, they know who YOU are--if anyone causes a fuss over this, you may find yourself having problems you'd rather avoid.

I am in total agreement with Azzalea - if no one is hurt, if there isn't any smoke or blood, let it go.

I'd guess there's no point. If it's a small town, you are not the only ones to know how these people behave, and you alone can't change it. File it away. Encourage others to run for the school board, and encourage friends to vote for them. I'd keep my contact with these dolts to the bare minimum.

Well said Azzalea. I would be careful also of starting a chain of gossip (since you are in business there) as that would not be a good thing either. Part of Your ethics that you live by would be to not give in to the temptation to spread such a rumor. That would be tough!

I'd find out who the truck it was that they used as a dumpster and a porta-potty and I'd tell the owner.

It's not really your business but then again they made it your business by doing it in front of you. Daring you to say something. That's BS. I don't back down from punks and those P-ants were just that. So while it isn't my fight I couldn't just walk away without at least telling the owner. At least leave a note on the truck if you're afraid to get in a brawl. I would consider it my duty to snitch them off to the owner of the truck just as I would had they run into it. Right is right.

I appreciate the responses. At least I'm not the only one who found their behavior abhorrent. The really ironic part is that about 10 years ago we were considering a business decision to try and spur some economic development and one of these 6 people wrote us a letter begging us not to do it due to the "type of people it might bring to town". I'll have to look and see if I can find that.

I have stuck my neck out many times and there are very few people who stand with me but are glad I voiced my opinion. Well, that has proven to benefit them but not me. So, I am learning that leaving a note anonimously like
wildchild said lets them know they have been seen. If you know where other cars of theirs are then do the same. You were sickened by what you saw and they need to stop so maybe this recourse is the answer for you. I am sorry this happened but you can scare them straight without ruining their reputation.

I'd ignore them and leave peacefully. I'm afraid of any violence. If you said something, one of them might have had a knife or gun. Then again, a call to the police would be a good idea. I had trouble with some young men in my town. I was walking to the grocery store alone,nearly there, when three young men came up to me and asked for money. I ignored them and continued walking, I then reported it to both the police and the store manager. The police said they wouldn't do anything, as no crime had been committed. Sheesh! The store manager promised to "keep an eye on things" .

I think that you should be at the next school board meeting and ask for a public explaination of their behavior!

When you let people intimidate you into doing things that are wrong or not doing things that you believe are right is a crime in itself and only encourages more. Ironic how some will talk about bullies and we have to "do something" about bullies, yet when the bully comes outside of the schoolyard, the bully rules. It shouldn't be tolerated on the school property or off the school property and yes it probably take some effort to do something and it definitely takes some courage. I don't know if many people can feel good about themselves when they let others push them around.

I differ from a lot of people here because I strongly believe you need to stand up for what you believe is right, even if it is occasionally to your detriment. I firmly believe that when people witness crime but refuse to get involved, they're nothing less than an accessory to the crime and many times worse than the perp. How many times have you had or known people who had car damage from careless people but witnesses are so chicken-schick they won't get involved. This belief that everyone carries a gun or a knife and are out to get you personally turns my stomach. It's a copout IMO and nothing more. An excuse for laziness often. And often these are the people who cry the loudest when they're the victim of something.

You need to decide what *your* morals, ethics and beliefs suggest you do. To do nothing condones and contributes to the actions. As a business owner I was still very involved in opposing things or supporting things when I felt they were *right*. Did it cost me some business? Yes. But then again, it also gained me a lot of respect with the people whose respect meant something to me and also actually gained me some business too. When a politician was giving gift contracts to relatives I stood up at a televised council meeting and called for the Mayor's resignation. I've never regretted it nor any other activities in crime prevention. Yes it cost me time, and cost me money since I contributed heavily to crime prevention, but I believe it's right.

It's probably a little late now to go to the police, but you could talk to them. Depends on how ethical the local law folk are. They might not do anything official but planting a bug in their ear might be of some use.

Contacting a superintendent is of little value. Remember, the superintendent works *for* the school board! Do you think a sup is going to challenge his/her boss on something like this? If they had ethics they would, but I don't believe they will. I know a lot of school district employees, and let's leave it at that!

I think notifying the vehicle owner is a proper thing to do. I also would probably either write the offenders or more likely talk to them personally and suggest they resign to gauge their reaction before going to a school board meeting and bring it up there. Possibly invite some local media to attend that meeting too. I might not immediately identify the people at the meeting, depending on the situation but I'd outline the situation factually, state that I don't believe this is proper conduct for school board officials and ask the perpetrators to voluntarily resign. I also like Marry's suggestion of asking for an explanation. Perhaps do that before requesting the resignation (and skip talking to them personally).

There's no way I could ignore this. It's wrong in too many ways and the ramifications of intimidation are too serious. Crime swells when people refuse to get involved. This is more than having long grass because the mower won't start. This is more than a speeding ticket by a public official.

cynic, I liked your post. One of the things that I have thought about lately is adult bullies. You don't usually see them acting like kids bully but they have all the tools.
On Celebrity Apprentice Gary Busey was bullied so say I. He was different and had had brain surgery. The celebraties attacked him verbally, laughed at him and he had no friend to support him or counsel them. This is how Trump sees business?
At school we have had Stop Bullying month for the kids.I think it should be addressed on a national level for adults too. Think about people in control, bosses, spouses, adult siblings, neighbors, drivers. I say these guys in the truck are probably in the above categories with their wives, staff etc. Sad and I hope they get what they deserve when seen in a more public setting.

To be honest I really don't want to "do" anything because we're such as small town. But I see it more as a tipping point in what is considered socially acceptable behavior and things are going in the wrong direction. Board members, both personally and specifically in their role, should attempt to display and exemplify good citizenship and consideration and respect for others. The guy staring at us as he peed was one of blatant disregard for us. They could have stopped at a cornfield 10 minutes before coming to town or gone in the bar to use a restroom....but main street?
