Ask the grandchild to cash it so they can clear it from their account. They may have lost it.

Grandchild is age 22.

Why doesn't she just ask her if she's forgotten about the check or lost it? She'd like to keep her checking account up to date.

Where they given together or separately? Possibly one was lost and the recipient doesn't know it exists. Why were two given instead of just one? That seems odd.

How old is the child...old enough to cash the checks themselves or do they need a parent to help. Maybe the parent thought two checks was too much and are planning on returning one....maybe they thought grandma accidentally wrote two instead of one...

There's too many unknowns to have a real opinion. Obviously, people like money and checks so it doesn't sound like a child would be being disrepectful. I could see a $10 or $20 check being forgotten... but one for thousands of dollars... I doubt it...

You have more background on the situation...What do you think?

Was the grandmother thanked for the checks? Were they received? (Unless the grandmother is trying to avoid estate taxes, why would she give money that she needs to a grandchild who seemingly *doesn't* need it?)

Grandparent MUST call and say "I'm just wondering, hon--have you lost the other check? Because if you have, I'm going to have to call the bank to put a stop-payment on it. It took a long time to save that money, and I don't want some stranger having it!"

If the child has lost the check, I might then say "I think I'm going to put that other money into a certificate of deposit for you. That'll be SO much better for you, and you'll get a bit of interest on it!" Then the child cannot use that money for a little while, and it will be a good lesson in how to value and manage money, even if it was earned by someone else.

Has the grandchild said "Thank you"?

Both checks were handed over at the same time. Yes there
was a 'thank you'. They were for different dates, about 2 weeks apart, because the Grandparent didn't want the bank
to ask a lot of questions (sometimes they seem nosey).

They were just 'gifts' since grandparent is reconfiguring
her assets and this person had reached age 22 and was give option of CD or to manage $ herself. She opted to take
checks and manage funds herself.

I don't understand this....was the bank writing the checks for her? Maybe herein lies the reason the grandchild didn't cash them at the same time... maybe grandma said something about it and he is waiting a few weeks in between to cash them so that the bank doesn't get suspicious or whatever????

Possibly the child is waiting until next year to cash the second check so that he can take the $2000 tax free gift exemption each year. Who knows...

We don't know... Just call the grandkid already....

I just really dislike when people assume the negative in people (especially their own relatives/grandkids) without knowing for sure. Granted, maybe the child is spoiled to high heavens, but I would hope his own grandma who is writing him a check would only consider that as a last option/resort to why he hasn't cashed the check. I assume she mentioned that as an excuse to you otherwise you would not have mentioned it.

I could see someone venting if a child is spoiled and has definitely acted as such, but without knowing the facts, I just hate to see a grandma using that term for her grandchild and assuming the worst... Let's give the child the benefit until we know for sure...

How long ago was the second check dated valid to be cashed? Perhaps the granddaughter hasn't decided on where she wants to invest the funds and doesn't have accounts in which to 'stash' the money while she decides?

I guess I was right that Grandma wants to whittle down her estate? I got the feeling that the gifts were something of a hardship for her. (Maybe I read that wrong.)

I agree with those that say the grandmother should just ask the 22 year old grandchild what's up. It doesn't seem that, on the face of it, it should be that much of a quandary. But again, we don't know the specifics.

$13,000 is the limit on giftable tax-exempt giving per year :-) ...i'm an expert on receiving tax-exempt money LOL. my dad gifts my sis & i w/ birthday checks and knows darn well i refuse to pay taxes on money that has already been taxed to the hilt LOL. i'd track that 2nd check down asap you never know these days...we get our's via fedex signature requirred i don't trust the mail for something like that! i even have my DH accompany me to the bank and i go in and deposit it, not feed it into the ATM :-0 that is the only time i actually go to the bank lol ~ liz

22yr old adult gift recipient & adult gift givers. Unless I am the gift giver or the giver has asked me to intercede it is a case of MYOB. The financial interactions of other people are personal and should never be commented upon with them or discussed with others unless they have personally asked for you to help or for your opinion.
Though in this hypothetical situation.........
........As the gift giver I would ask the young woman if she had cashed to check and if not to please do so soon. I would like to clear my account and the funds still in there are causing issues I don't wish to deal with. If the check is lost a stop payment could be necessary and then finally as many personal checks are only good for 90 days from the date signed it may end up not payable.

I don't understand why grandma doesn't just ask DGD about the check???? Obviously she has a good enough relationship with the GD to write her a check (or 2) for several thousand dollars so what's the problem about just asking? I would have already asked,spoiled or not!

I would put a stop payment on it. I don't believe a check is good after a certain time, but I wouldn't want one of my checks floating around out there.

I have been on both sides of this. My niece used to wait a long time to deposit checks, sometimes she would give them to one of her parents and they would hold it for quite awhile. I would call and tell her I was balancing my account and noticed it wasn't deposited yet and just wanted to remind her to deposit it. My father has given me checks that I failed to deposit. I never go to the bank (my paychecks are direct deposit, as is any tax refund, I bank online, I've been carrying around a check for weeks now, in fact), so I often will wait quite awhile to deposit something. My father will call me to nudge me to deposit it so his account is cleaned up.

I wouldn't say anything like how long it took to save it, etc., that is passive agressive.

I believe that personal checks are void if not cashed within 6 months. I would ask the grandchild if they are planning on cashing the check soon. No foul, no harm.
