I've been reading your posts so all I can say is shame on you! Now you're just angry all over again. You were already approved. I'd like to know why the manager is all over trying to give the woman a break when you've already verbalized to him that she doesn't do her job.

So give yourself a swift kick and take a three day weekend instead.

You must make a note to self: "Do not open mouth, before engaging brain!" LOL If this is so AUTOMATIC for you, it might be a clue as to why you've been taken advantage of in your workplace.

Oh, grrrr! You need to learn what I did a few years ago, automatically say NO to everything at first. It's so much easier to change a no to a yes later, but it's nearly impossible to change a yes to a no.

I'm so sorry you're upset with yourself, Susan, but like Patti said, forgive yourself and move on. And keep this in mind, too. Your supervisor has just seen, once again, what a good team player you can be and how you're not obstinate for the sake of being obstinate.

susan what goes around will come around..don't get upset...just go in NOW and check out your other options..thanksgiving, christmas are on a friday this year, as is new years..then mark your calandar both at the office and at home so you don't forget!

I would go back and tell him you changed your mind. Make up a good excuse. Shoot, just tell him you want the extra days off altogether, too. You have just as much right as she does.

Can you go to the boss and tell him he caught you off guard so you weren't thinking about the holiday, however, you had already made plans, so you need your already approved day back? Then if he says no, at least you tried.

Your supervisor is the jerk here. He shouldn't have even asked you, he should have told her no from the get go. No wonder she's like she is.

I'm just going to deal with it, and concentrate on not making that mistake again. I am WAY too accommodating. But it's very good advice for me to pause, and not give answers and decisions like that right away in the future.

Check when the next three day weekend is (Columbus Day?) and take the day off before and after NOW and don't give in if she asks you to change. Practice saying no-No-NO!

Columbus Day isn't a "big enough" holiday to battle over. You should put in your request (if you haven't already) to have extra time off for Christmas. Since it's on a Friday, ask for the 24th off. And, when you ask for it (in writing), you can say something like, "Since I accommodated you and Nadine in giving up my preapproved vacation day on September 4th, I trust the approval of this request shouldn't be a problem."

When I saw your subject line, I was inclined to come on to express some mild disagreement with your conclusion. However, on reading your story, I am ready to shift my judgement - slightly.

As I read your message, and the responses, and your reaction, I see a measure of agreement as to the actuality of the situation.

If you'd like some early-on alleviation of the damage, how about asking for the Tuesday after Labour Day?

I think I'd rather ask for an extra day at Thanksgiving, if you make a big thing of that.

Maybe you could even "discover a new lifestyle continent/world" ... on Columbus Day! Or go looking for one, whether on an ocean or not? Always nice to find/develop a new facet, or one lying long-term as a potential, in which one had some interest, that one had never done some research and work to develop.

Who knows - maybe Nadine could instigate your developing a beautiful new facet of your life?

you gave yourself this good advice; it takes time to get used to saying that,
but you've learned the hard way . It took me years to learn to do that, not be caught off guard and answer too quickly to anything.

What's done is done. Forget it and move on. You have the advantage of knowing that you're "the better man" in this instance and not coming off as a petty person. Saying no in the beginning would have been acceptable but taking it back later reflects more on you than on her. I'm proud of your decision to drop it. Now, go put in for the next 3 or 4 day weekend and enjoy.
