Those that wanted to know about the Bark Off...

I received it from ebay on Thursday.My gosh! It's like a miracle! I can't hear it working but I know it is because Rover hates it.When I turn it on,he hides in the bathroom.The neighbor dogs barked at a little dog that "visits" everyday,but only barked a couple times,then must have figured it out and quit.It's peaceful here in the valley again! LOL! Rock hates it to,I have to watch him,he wants to eat it! LOL!

Anyway,I doon't know why it didn't work for some,because it really seems to be working here.If it goes bad,I WILL get another one.

Deb....I must have missed that...what is it and how does it work..

I can't tell you what a better life this house would have if that darned Yorkie of ours would quit barking.

I breath, she barks, I move a foot, she barks, I scratch my head , she barks....I could fill two large books about what she barks at....Sometimes I just want to.....well I won't say.

This is our third Yorkie, the other two never acted like this. This is the last one. In fact I think she is the last dog.

It's a tiny box you can hang anywhere,emits ultrasonic sounds that only dogs can hear.When they bark,it bothers them.They get to associate the bad noise with barking and they quit.I got it on ebay,they have tons on there for sell.It was about 10 bucks shipping and all.Best 10 bucks I ever spent! You can turn it on and off,I only turn it on if we want to sit out front.Before,we couldn't even sit out there because the neighbor dogs raised Holy Heck! I point it toward their gate.No one knows I have it on....you can't hear it.I didn't want any trouble with the neighbor.It's inconspicuos.You wouldn't have to hide it though! LOL! It worked wonders for us and quick! You could leave yours on in the house.Uses a 9 volt battery,not included.Only saying that so if you get one,you can have the batteries ready! LOL! You could even carry it with you and when she barks,aim it at her,she'd learn to quit real fast,I bet.Unless she's deaf....

jim30, your advice does sound reasonable. I guess the thing that has discouraged me the most is that I did not know still living trees, which have simply gone dormant, would ever keep holding onto their dead leaves like a live branch that is cut off of a tree and subsequently dies will do. Still, since there is green under the bark about half way up the trunk, I am game to take your advice and still plant this tree in the fall. Do you think it would be better if I wait until after our first freeze, or simply plant it around the middle part of September when our daily high temps consistantly stop rising above the low 80 degrees F. range. I do plan to test the planting area to make certain how well the planting hole will drain, and from those results, to detemine if I should plant it's rootflare just at the virgin soil level, or if the planting bed needs to be raised. Since the tree has gone into shock and it's dead leaves have not been able to feed it's roots ever since a few weeks ago, will it do the tree more harm for me to bare root it just before I plant it? Or should I simply only wash away the potting soil I added, but still plant the tree with it's orginal B&B rootball's soil? Lastly; at what point in this whole process should I remove the dead leaves that the tree's branches have not been able to push off? Or does the timing for that, even matter?

IMO, leans such as either tree shown in this thread are ultimately insignificant. There will be so much growth in various directions as to make it completely non-issue. OP, while it is admirable that you bothered to follow directions with the planting, those cards are just as often wrong as right. The usual "plant at same depth as in the pot" or whatever completely misses the point that the root flare, that zone of buttressed growth where roots diverge from trunk, is to be left visible upon completion. Since trees are dug in nursery rows after various cultivation practices have thrown soil up over what will be the root ball, that can be completely obscured. Also in potted stock, the plant may well have been placed too deeply into the pot at some point. So directions of that sort are virtually of no value. I always advise that when in doubt about the truth of this concept, people take a walk in the woods and perhaps for the first time in their lives, see how trees actually grow. They kind of sit on top of the ground. And yes, a too-deep planting surely can start a tree down the road to bark/stem abnormalities although as Ark also points out, we can't know for certain what caused this with yours. +oM

thanks for all the nice comments :) I cant tell u right now what the diameter is, you'll have to w8 for the weekend before i can tell you that :) The tree took a bit of damage last year (09), my dad had forgotten about it, and i wasnt brought out from its dark dry winter spot before late may, so it lost a few leafs. As you can see the other jade in the back ground took it pretty hard too, it used to have a big thick crown, but last year (09) it lost all its leafs + a big branch that fell off. He made about 20-25 new plants out of the branch and gave them to the local store owner, and she gave them away to the locals. both jades is about the same age and has both served as mother plants in a greenhouse. the plants was taken inside in the middle of November, this time they got to be inside the house and not just a cold dark basement as usual :) heres my own little jade that i broke of a bush in Portugal last year in june. i hope that it will some day look my dads :) im not really sure how im gonna prune it, any suggestions? i was thinking of cutting it down so that it only has the 3 bottom branches left.

Hardwood throughout my entire first floor, including the kitchen and all entry areas. Residents don't wear shoes in the house. Human residents, nor furry ones. :) Visitors are not given any rules upon arrival. :) Most people see you walking around in bare feet, or socks, or slippers, and immediately move to take off their shoes. Depending upon who they are and why they are there, I often tell them don't bother. For instance, if it's the HVAC guy and he's going to work in the cellar, I couldn't care less if he keeps his shoes on. As someone noted upthread, the nice thing about hardwood is that it does clean up very easily. I prefer the residents keep shoes off the floor b/c it does keep the floors cleaner, but there is no way I would ever make a guest remove their shoes. As far as damage - most of the damage to my floor comes from the toenails of the 20 pound furry lunatics who share my home. Yes I keep them short - no lectures on appropriate dog nail procedures please! They are young and love to run and play - nails dig in on cornering no matter how short they are. :) However there has been some damage from people in shoes who had rocks stuck in the treads. Most of it from the early days when the house was under construction because sadly my GC was an inconsiderate moron regarding things like this. TL:DR. It's hardwood. It dents. I do what I can to keep the dents to a minimum but don't stay up at night about it either.

Chubby--thank you SO much for the follow-up. That is really great news. Is it outside or where? I wonder if the neighbor wonders why her dogs are so quiet. I hope they don't get used to it and start up again.

Make sure you have an extra battery on hand. You don't want to live a minute without that thing!

I take it outside with me and sit it on the picnic table,then bring it back in.It has a box to mount it with but I don't want to leave it out in the heat here.This heat ruins anything plastic,makes it brittle.I have lots of batteries and the Dollar Store is only a block away! LOL!

I saw the birdhouse one,but it's expensive and I didn't want to spend that much on something that I wasn't sure if it would work or not.I'm going to watch on ebay though and see if I can get one reasonably priced.Those things are over 50 bucks! Wow!
Lydia....maybe you could get a foghorn and blow it when they're noisy! LOL!

I think the birdhouse one is effective up to 50' and the Bark Off 20'. Also, the birdhouse has different settings. Not sure if the Bark Off has that or not. Sure wish I'd known about this when our former neighbor and his barking-at-7-am-Sunday-morning dog were next door.

I have a pooch that barks at anything that moves. I bought mine a few weeks ago and it was the best 20.00 I have spent.

I wish I would have found this years ago.

I bought the Bark Off, too. We live on a corner, so there is lots of doggie traffic causing our girls to "go crazy" with their barking. I put the Bark Off on the dining room window sill and it has cut down on their barking! Works great on one of our girls, not so much on the other one. That may be why people give bad reviews...it must not be effective on all dogs.

My DH and kids can hear it going off, and it sorta irritates them.

Yes the birdhouse one is 50 ft....but we're only across a one lane alley so it's not far.I may invest in the birdhouse one too,because I'd like to put one in my backyard .My dogs do bark out back sometimes...there are horses and goats across the field in the back they bark at when they're out..so instead of making them come in,I can just quiet their barks!The Bark Off has 2 settings,high and low.I keep it on high.I think the birdhouse one has an audible setting ,I wouldn't use that one anyway.I don't want to hear BUZZ...BUZZ...BUZZ all day.
The collar works good too but it's audible,worked on Mic and Emmie when they were young.But I can't put a collar on the neighbor dogs! LOL!

I feel so powerful with my little Bark Off in hand! Like I can control all dogs...OUT,DAMN BARK! OUT! I must not let the power go to my head! LOL!
Your Dh and kids must have REALLY good hearing houstonmom....I can't hear it.I guess some people would be more sensitive than others though.I imagine it does drive them crazy!

I just went on ebay to look, because we sure could use one around here with my two pooches and my next door neighbours two pooches. The sellers that will ship to Canada want outrageous postage. $25 and $34 just to ship the package that probably would cost $3-4 dollars to ship. I'll have to keep looking and waiting until I can find a seller that isn't trying to make tons of money on shipping.

I've got to get one of those! DS's dog barks at everything(she's a big dog) and drives me nuts.There's nothing more annoying than "barkie" dogs.Especially the ones that bark at every little thing and won't stop no matter what you do! I have seen those things at Wal Mart but didn't want to spend the money not knowing if they would even work or not.Now I'll go buy one for sure.Glad you solved your problem CR.

I wonder how far it is from my laundry room window to the far end of the dog runs. My dogs are not huge barkers, they bark if someone comes onto our property, but they bark at the sirens too. We live just a few miles from the fire station and some days when the wind is right we can have barking a lot! I don't want my dogs to disturb my neighbors. I know there are several acres between us, but still! I may have to try it. I can't afford that many collars!

I would like one that works with noisy kids in restaurants.
I know it sounds mean but sometimes parents have no clue and allow their children to run and scream.
