A blast from my gardening past

While going through some old files yesterday I found my DH's gardening journal. He kept it for five years, recording the dates we started our seeds (we started almost everything under plant lights), the dates we harvested each one for the first time, how much ended up in the freezer, and what he wanted to do for the following year.

The vegetable garden was a big deal for us. We spent our New Years Eves making out our seed order for the year.

In 1981 we grew:

Tomatoes

Eggplant

Peppers

Cabbage

Red Cabbage

Savoy Cabbage

Chinese Cabbage

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Purple Cauliflower

Spinach

Swiss Chard

Sugar Snap Peas

Snow Peas

Peas

Brussels Sprouts

Okra

Artichokes

Asparagus

Kale

Rutabagas

Yellow Crookneck Squash

Zucchini

Roly-Poly Zucchini

Buttercup Squash

Corn

Cucumbers

Pole Beans

Pinto Beans

Lima Beans

Parsley

Beets

Carrots

Pumpkins

Crenshaw melons

Cantaloupes

The freezer tally went like this:

Spinach - 17 quarts, 29 pints, 2 1.5 pints

Peas - 18 pints, 12 1.5 pints

Snow Peas - 14 pints

Sugar Snap Peas - 10 quarts

Broccoli - 23 quarts, 1 pint

Cauliflower - 2 quarts

Kentucky Wonder beans - 26 quarts, 2 1.5 pints

Corn (cut) - 32 pints

Our children were 8, 6, and 3 at the time. I cooked from scratch three times a day, kept a flower garden, and made a lot of the kids' clothes. I get tired just reading about this, but somehow we had the energy back then.

Any other vegetable gardeners out there?

Susan
