Do you have stuff on top of your refrigerator?

I am so guilty of this. With no over the refrigerator cabinet and limited counter space, I use this space all the time for extra storage.

You will always find my hammer up there. If when we buy chips or snacks they go up there as well, and you know that roll of extra long heavy duty aluminum foil that you seem to buy every year around Thanksgiving, well, I keep that up there, and I find I actually use it.

Oh, you'll probably find a layer of dust too. :(

OH yeah, DH always puts the pizza coupons up there, burnt out light bulbs, don't ask me why he doesn't throw them away, pens papers, you name it, it's up there.

I have 3 tea pots, a framed picture of my Golden girl, Remy, and two pieces of pottery. My DH puts his keys and the car key there also. Oh yeah, and lots of dust!

We had a cute white wooden charging station from Pottery barn with a little drawer, and a place for the charging cords to come out and a shelf for them to sit on. It took up a lot of space and became another catchall for junk. Plus, it was really too big for a counter. And a bit too small for iPads, even minis. Another problem we experienced was that whenever anyone needed a charging cord in another room, he or she would remove it from the charging station and forget to put it back, so half the time it there weren't enough cords available, So my solution was to change out at least one electrical outlet in each room to one that has a single ac dc plug thingie and two USB receptors. Then I made sure every room had a couple of USB cords plugged into those receptors. Here's what happened with that: first, if you don't use "real" apple cords there is no way to know if they'll work, even the guaranteed amazon ones. Second, the cords are not long enough to continue to use the devices while they are plugged in, so that is another problem. Then the worst problem of all--- USB charge cords plugged directly into a USB receptacle charge at the speed of an octogenarian turtle, and I mean SLOW. When the USBs are plugged into an adapter which is then plugged into an outlet they charge about 3x as fast. I have experimented with every outlet we have and this holds for all of them. PLUS, when you have TWO USBs plugged into a single outlet, one of them may not charge at all. And the other will still charge slowly. Additionally, when all our kids are home visiting at the same time and go back to their various schools,apartments and jobs, the charging cords disappear! So my recommendation for daytime is to not change your outlets to USB receptors or even half USB, but get a USB acdc adapter for at least one outlet in every room and leave it in (or the Beltone thing described below), an extra long APPLE brand only charging cord for that adapter, and mark it in some way so that it can be identified as a house cord, like tying a red twist tie on it. We finally abandoned the charging station now just plug our devices into whatever room we happen to be in at the time. The Beltone thing actually plugs into the outlets (therefore making the USBs work like those in adapters) that has gives you USB receptors and acdc plug ins. We have these in the outlets in our respective bathroom vanities. That's where my phone goes at night, it's ready the next morning. Dh's phone has to be plugged in next to the bed for night calls, but it's in an adapter to charge faster. No docking stations as they don't work with many phone cases. Sorry this has turned I to such a long post, but we have been trying to find the "perfect" solution in a multi iPhone, multi ipad family. Not sure we have found it yet!

JanJan, you might think to replace the toilets if they are that bad. The flush right ones we bought were pretty cheap & work great. It was an easy job. Our plungers and brushes have decorative storage housings but it's still evident what they are. I will move them to a spot in the garage, maybe all but one set will go to storage. Disposable brushes are a great idea. I am buying us all cheap travel bags for our toiletries and moved my son's things to our bathroom so we all use the same space and it's easier to maintain. We painted & reorganized his bathroom space, all needed. I will put up some items I bought for the new place and we just won't use that space on a daily basis anymore. While some people may feel differently, people expect to actually see signs of you living there. If your market is bad like ours, you could be spending a lot of money on disposable brushes. Do you have room under the sink? While having it look like a show house is nice, what does your neighborhood demand? With ours we don't have to "not live here" because even if I don't get stuff picked up, ours shows cleaner then most around here. I was told that you can tell it is kept up verses showing for a cleaning. I put the dish drainer in a cabinet, hubby likes to throw it in the locked shed. The offers we've had the toilet brush was where it usually is in the decorative holder and the dish drainer was in the cabinet. How much do pods cost? We are getting ready to sell and I think we have a lot of stuff to store. I have been selling things I don't think we need, but we can't sell everything. I am interested in the POD idea, but was wondering the cost. What is the market like in your area? Do you have kids? Will any of their stuff go into the PODS? For us, the PODS would have been really expensive and the location it would be kept at is a 30 minute drive, one way. They also require 24 hours IIRC notice if you want to get your stuff. I don't recall if there was a fee either if they had to bring the POD out to you so you can access it. From what I remember last year, it's put in a storage facility and some times they are stacked, so they might have to get it down. We ended up renting a garage sized storage at about $125 per month, thankfully too. The PODS would have been more expensive where we live. You also have to worry about packing it so that nothing breaks / moves during the drive to where it's going. We've been to our storage unit a few times on a moments notice. I couldn't imagine having to call someone and make an appointment.

I like my fruit refrigerated except for bananas which I keep in a bag in a cupboard. I do have a 3 tiered stand that I use for tomatoes, garlic and my car keys but the island has a large wooden bowl that is mostly decorative. I usually remove it when I start to seriously cook. Not sure of the islands dimensions but 40" x 60" seems about right.

I don't keep much cleaning stuff. I use vinegar, nature' s miracle (for pets), bleach occassionally and baking soda. I don't have too many rags etc. Everything fits into one caddy under my kitchen sink. I just carry it to the bathroom. Our bathroom was renovated with no perminent cabinetry, so I bought an old 50's kitchen larder with three shelves on top, one drawer and three shelves below. We make everything fit in here or we get rid of it. Daily use items sit on a small set of shelves beside the sink. My hubby has more stuff to clean his car with than I have to clean a house (or two) with!!! How do we keep organized, I just get rid of "stuff". Now, we are stuff people! Collectors...but we built in shelves and display areas and what I don't have room for I make decisions and edit. I grew up with parents who had closed in built in shelving in the basement and you could hide a lot of usless stuff in there. I decided I wasn't going to do that. One of my best girlfriends is a professional organizer. She is very helpful with my hubby and gives him hints to try and get into the mindset of editing out uselsess stuff in life. I still haven't gotten him to edit paper clutter (he will hide piles, and doesn't even know he's doing it)...although now the "offical" paper clutter must be kept in a portable file or two working photo storage boxes and nowhere else. They get full, he must take the time to edit. Fear of random tossing of piles gets action :) GGG

I have a really big wood cutting board and a large serving tray on mine. Mainly because they won't fit anyplace else.

Ditto on the kleenex and the phone books in my old kitchen. My new kitchen has cabinets built out closer to the front so I actually use them for cereal and a box of baking supplies.

I used to keep a big old wooden box up there with DD's playdough, crayons, ink stamps... stuff I didn't want her into unless she was supervised... but now she's all grown up so I have a row of old glass insulators there now.

We keep the bread, unopened packages of cookies and chips up there. I do have a cabinet up there but need a tall step stool to reach it. I have done this for as long as I can remember.

As a kid my mother had a bread box where she kept this kind of stuff. I don't have counter space for one of those and what the heck here is a free flat surface doing absolutely nothing.

My huge serving bowls that there isn't room in the cupboard for and the hotpads (not potholders) are on top of the fridge.

Well let's see, I have a cabinet over the frig but it's not frig depth so it's pretty worthless since it's hard to reach. I keep some baking things in there like bread pans and who knows what else is in there since I haven't been in there for years and don't reach it easily. So in front of the doors sits my breadmaker, also seldom used along with some junk like a couple extra blue-ice can coolers and not sure what else. Sometimes chips or snacks go up there.

Not much room left for dust!

I don't have a cupboard over mine either. Right now we have dust, dog cookies, a box of cereal that won't fit in the food cupboard, my lucite cookbook holder, the tray for using on the grill to hold veggies, did I mention dust??

I keep my microwave on top of the fridge. It saves wasting useful counterspace in my small kitchen.

dilly, when my DD went to college she had a MICRO/FRIDGE, a dormsize fridge with separate door for above freezer and microwave on top. She LOVED it.

I do have a cabinet over the fridge but not compeletly. Just enough room to put 5 green glass water pitchers. I just toss them in the dishwasher when they get dusty.

A large ceramic rooster, a small ceramic rooster, a white nesting hen candy dish, a large brown rabbit cookie jar that is sadly lacking of cookies and an antique dust collection! ( I can't reach it, so I seldom dust up there.)

Since our kitchen remodel last year the only thing above the refrigerator is a cabinet as we had the fridge built in. There are seldom used dishes, vases and whatnot in there. Before the remodel there were two decorative jars. One with candy in it and one with stuff we wanted to keep away from the kids when they were little like matches, razors we used for cleaning and such.

Hi mjny!

This is a timely question...I just climbed a short ladder to clean the top of my 'greasy' refrigerator top and decided that the wine holder with wine (given to us as gifts years ago and we don't drink) in it and a rooster statue (I overpaid for...saw one like it in Country Living and just had to have one like it!) which was really difficult to clean well with all those 'feathers' and decided to sell the wine holder and rooster at a yard sale for 2-3 dollars each and dumped the wine down the sink.

NOW I don't have anything on the top of the fridge and it should be easier to clean and easier to open the cabinet doors behind it without 'stuff' sitting in front of them like before.

The ONLY thing now that may be 'difficult' as I am getting older is having to use the ladder and when that time comes whatever is in the cabinets will have to stay there and the dust/grease will, too! LOL!

I have a HUGE pottery bowl I use for stew or salads, that is stored up there, as well as my tea kettle. Otherwise, just some occasional dust. :)

Tissue box w/plastic bags, 2 bags of wine corks [I know there's some sort of 'crafty' thing I could do with all those corks....], spare lunch bags, and other assorted stuff that I can't remember why I'm still hanging on .. Oh - but I did solve the dusting part... well sorta... I cut a plastic runner [hardware store] to fit the top... I haul it down & wash it off with soap & hot water...

Yes Chisue, she does. And my fridge is tall too- She tends to knock stuff down when she does that so I was surprised to find her up there as nothing was on the ground!

The only thing on top of my fridge, other than dust, is a plant. It is what is left of a dish garden given to me by friends when my DH died. That will be 27 years in December. I can't remember the name of the plant, but it continues to grow and I can't part with it.

Gadget gave me a good idea here. . . I'm going to use my (faux) feather duster to clean off the top of the fridge. Never thought of that!!

Yes, and I HATE IT!!!!!! However, DH is chief, cook and bottle washer. I have no control over anything in the kitchen. If I did, nothing would be on top of the fridge. we have lots of cabinet and counter space.

A big red apple cookie jar I got for my birthday 37 years ago, and it has been up there that long. I keep a thin white (well off white now) folded (so it can barley be seen and doesn't hang over the edge) bath towel covering the top of the fridge. Every so often I wash and shine the cookie jar, and wash the towel. It saves the top from catching so much grease and dust.

I have the useless shallow wall cabinet over the fridge also. I keeps seldom used items like holiday items,water pitchers and thermos bottles in there.

On the fridge itself I have 3 nested trays with an electric hot water kettle,the coffee grinder and a Cocomotion pot sitting on them.

On the side without the trays is DH's lunch box (a small cooler type).

I keep my DH's custom cutting board up there. It has two nails protruding from it so he can put things on the nails and cut them easily with his one hand. But it is such a pain, literally, to have down on the counters, I always stab myself on the nails.
Also I have always kept my cordless drill up there, not sure why, put that is it's spot.
I love the idea of putting a towel up there to keep the grease and dust off. Why didn't I think of that?
I think it would be neat of someone came up with a hard plastic washable covering for the top of the fridge. I would buy one!

LOL Trish!!! When we first got Bud, he would get on top of the frig, and then down behind it!!! Then he couldn't get out. We would pull the frig out so he could walk out. He doesn't do that now.

I have a large ceramic jar that biscotti biscuits came in, that I use for coffee. Also a wooden tray that has a kleenex box, bag of chips or pretzels when we have them, a glass jar that is currently empty. Mom fills it with jelly beans as one of DH's birthday presents.

One day many years ago, we went to a lady's home to pick out an anniversary cake for my in law's 50th wedding anniversary. She had her kitty litter pan on top of her refrigerator!!!!!!

Now as to what is on top of my refrigerator is the same as what is on my tall freezer in my kitchen, empty large baskets and two baskets have great big stuffed chickens in them! Strange I know.

I have 3 boxes of cereal, a clock, a small tupperware pencil
sharpener, some dog treats and a wooden paddle.
It may sound like a lot but it isn't, I have it nicely arranged!!!

I have cupboards over my refrigerator where I store my seldom used stuff. Like a cake plate/fruit bowl. A Fry Baby, waffle iron.
But between the cupboard and top of refrigerator, I have Toby's Advantix, and his brush.

I keep boxed snacks up there. If I didn't, hubby would wear the cupboard doors off their hinges looking for something to munch on. I hate hearing the doors banging all evening.

Don't know...I'm short and can't see the top very well. I do see a cooler type lunch box up there. My hubby rules the kitchen so I'm only allowed to bake stuff and do dishes. No cooking for me! I'm pretty sure there is a "fine" layer of dust up there with the lunch box...ha ha.

There are recessed cabinets above my fridge....empty because there is no way shorty little me could reach them and I can't climb a ladder any more. On top of my fridge is my blue and white speckled roasting pan and some baskets.
