How's Everyone Doing?

It got pretty intense here last night (between oh, 9 and midnight? maybe?) Lots of wind, pouring rain, but it looks as if most of it's moved off by now.

Just spoke to DH (we've actually been on the phone a few times overnight). The country house is fine--the new sump pump he put in a week ago worked, although there was very little water in the pump hole, overall. He did lose electric for about an hour last night during the height of the storm, but that's not too unusual down there--our power is supplied by the city rather than a 'real' electric utility company, and it's not always as reliable. He said there were just a few small branches down.

Here? Long night--I was up and down to the cellar every 20-30 minutes, all night, to pump out the water that came in. We just have a portable pump here--don't get water all that often usually--and it has to be turned on and off manually.

Right now, it's getting nice. Still a little cloudy, but rain has stopped, there's a nice fresh breeze--I've got all the windows open.

Hope everyone else faired as well. It was good that the predicted thunder and lightening never materialized, and the overnight hours weren't nearly as rough as had been expected. We never did get the 40+ mph winds in the middle of the night, and really, after midnight the rain slowed to a regular rain.

Yes it did here too,electric was out,wind blew so hard,limbs,sticks leaves Everywhere,pool is filled to brim.but Im here.Still pretty windy ,strong.

We dodged the bullet. We had a good amount of rain, but didn't have any problems with wind or power outages. I think our mountains and woods again helped to protect us from the hurricane.

Hoping that all in the hurricane's path are safe, with little or no damage.

I wonder if the reason grandmas had such luck with houseplants is they didn't have central heating and most had sun porches. I'd really like a sun porch! For your peace lily, try putting it in the bathroom or right next to the kitchen sink so it gets a lot of humidity. It also needs a lot of light, granted, it'll live in little, it prefers a lot. You could also try a pebble tray. I used to grow mine on a pebble tray on top of my fish tank light. I also rooted a lot of hard to root plants up there. Maybe a heat mat with the tray on top of it would work, hmmm I need to go out and get a heat mat.

Hi I haven't visited the forum since last winter. Now spring has come and so do I:) I left 2 brug plants outside and I'm afraid they might not be able to come back. No sign. fortunatly I've taking cuttings and I was even able to share some with my friends. Also maybe half of the cuttings that Branda sent me last fall are doing OK. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up so I can put them outside Happy gardening! Changsong

Here in Georgia we have fortunately not been hit quite as hard as states West of us, though we had some pretty bad thunderstorms this morning. I hope those in areas hardest hit are okay and my prayers are with them. We're just keeping an eye on the weather here because it's not supposed to be over yet and those storms are supposed to head straight our way! Grace

I have been absent for a while now too Remy. I had a dear friend who is in Biloxi, Ms. and have spent all my free time trying to locate her which I finally did a couple of days ago so now I have a little time to peruse the forums. My regular hummies have headed south but I am getting quite a few migrators now. They have discovered my alcove bed with the balsam from the swap along with several salvias, perennial geranium and cannas from the swap and another agastache and are all over everything. My plantz are still going strong in fact a little too much so. I have created a virtual jungle this year and it is almost impossible to tell where one plant ends and another begins. My vines are climbing over one another at this point and I have had to wire one arbor to my fence to keep it from toppling. Husky, yes some plantz are still growing in fact some salvias are over 6 ft. now. My cypress vine has left its trellis and has been growing up the side of the garage in between the siding and is headed for the peak of the garage roof. The morning glories have topped the neighbors 15 ft. shrubs and are up in one of his trees now LOL! Next year I really need to be more conservative in planting out my wintersown babies. The stone patio that I dug out over the summer has been staked finally and we are ready to add the crushed stone as soon as I remember to order it. We won't get much use out of it this year but hopefully it will be finished and ready to use come next spring. Penny

I have the police scanner on, and I'm listening to incessant reports of downed trees. Nothing on the property, at least not that I can see, but most of the sunflowers are flattened. Poor sunflowers......they had a bad year all around. The first two plantings got eaten.

Power blinked during the night and again this morning, but so far so good. Still lots of rain and wind.

Lots of rain during the evening and night, and heavy winds right now, but we're inside and doing fine. If I were young, I know I'd be heading to the beach to see the waves, but now that I'm older and more responsible, I'm staying home.

Power went out about 9:00 p.m. Came back on around 11:00 a.m. Lots of debris throughout the yard. One tree down on our garage and all the screens were blown out of our screened-in porch. We have a generator so the loss of electricity was just a slight inconvenience. Glad it's over. Now for the clean up.
