Monarch Butterflies - have you seen any?

Last night I commented to DH that I've never seen so many Viceroy butterflies at one time on the butterfly bush outside my kitchen window. There were 8!

And then I realized that I haven't seen a single monarch this year. When I was a kid they were the most common ones in our yards. I know they only lay their eggs on milkweed so the larvae have a ready food source but I seldom see milkweed in my neatly manicured neighborhood. Illegal logging in the Mexican forests is also devastating the population.

We do have lots of plants that appeal to butterflies (buddleia, monarda, aster, lantana, phlox) but I don't have any milkweed so I'm going to plant some in my yard and hope they discover it next year. It is rather sad- butterflies are such a delightful creatures.

Have you noticed many this year?
