I was robbed tonight :(

It's been years since my home was robbed. In the past years, it was burglarized 6 times. Over the years, I thought I had some pretty good locks on my doors and windows.

When I got home tonight, I saw the driveway gate was open with a bike in the driveway in front of my garage door.

They broke in by knocking out my AC window unit and just made a total mess of my home. Nothing of great value was taken, but it's just the worst feeling as some of you probably know.

I don't think I'm going to get much sleep tonight.

I give full credit to our police who spent two hours (and probably more) here. As many cities go, we are short handed with police; however, they do such good work and are so caring. (This young officer even helped me to get my AC back in the window.)

Thanks for letting me share my feelings....going to be a very late and long night.

Lana....who feels like she lives in the "hood", but this old house is paid for so I won't be leaving.

Thank you, Lillie. I can understand why you're up so late.

What I'm going through is nothing compared to you and your DS.

I so appreciate your kind words and thoughts.

I'm thinking of heating up some soup.

Here's hoping we can both get some rest.

I don't know where to ask about Streptocarpus from Rob's

    Q

I would wait at least a week before even thinking of repotting the Strep. This gives it time to adjust from the travel and to it's new environment. When you are ready to repot, do not repot into too large a container. Streps will tolerate being a little too dry over being to wet. The roots will definitely rot if kept to wet. You also want to keep the crown a little above the soil line, not even with it. This keeps the crown from drawing moisture from the soil, preventing it from rotting. If the Strep starts to droop from being too dry, don't worry. It will perk up once given water. As far as the soil goes, using a 1:1:1 ratio like violets is fine. Light is the same as violets or just slightly brighter. Enjoy! These plants are great! Once mature, you will have a beautiful, full, and in most cases constant blooming beauty. Dave

My condolences. Being such a yummy ingredient, it will be sadly missed. Your artistic carving made it more attractive, I'm afraid, and pumpkin snatching and smashing thieves have no idea as to the depths of deprivation their actions can cause to an avid composter. I'm sorry you couldn't even collect the remains from in front of your house. Not wanting my two to become roadkill, I brought them in the house where they proceeded to start going to mush pretty rapidly. Next year, you'll have to buy an extra and put it right in the compost instead of on your steps.

The presence of moths and mites would indicate that the colony was on it's way declining maybe at least 4 weeks ago. Generally, robbers are not to blame, it's when the colony is unable to defend properly when robbers can be a problem. Regular hive inspection routine would be recomended. Good lick.

With the old meters that use the rotating wheel, it is highly unlikely that the meter will register greater than actual use. It can register less than actual use. The modern digital meters-who knows? Does your bill show a meter number as well as the account number. Do all the bills have the same meter number? Have you compared the reading shown on the bill to that shown on the meter by reading the meter yourself? ? Have you checked to see if your meter number is the same shown on the bill? And the earlier question about the electric water heater is unanswered. Did you have your water heater repaired or replaced?

OH My Lana! I sure feel for you. I don't know if there is anyway to secure the air conditioner in your window or not! I hope there is so you can feel safer. Hugs to you my friend.

Thank you, Sue. Yes, there is a way to lock the window even with the AC unit...my own fault for not making sure it was installed.

The worst thing is they took my box of checks and I don't guess I can make my bank aware of this over the weekend. I will make an effort to call tomorrow just in case.

I'm going to lay down now though I may not sleep much...have so many lights on which is not the norm.

Oh Lana, how awful!! I don't know if you live alone or not. I hope you have some family nearby for comfort and help getting your home organized.

I would never have thought for a second about the A/C unit.

Definitely call the toll-free number on the back of your bank card. I thought I lost my debit card on a Sunday once, and called their number from the website.

Although if they started writing checks (not sure who takes personal checks nowadays) it would take days for them to clear and you'll have notified the bank by then.

It's been over 30 years since my home was broken into, but I still remember the feelings I experienced. I'm so very, very sorry this has happened to you. I know it takes FOREVER for the feelings of apprehension to leave and a sense of security to return.

Our bank is open untilnoon on Saturdays, so I hope yours is too. Unfortunately you'll have to close out that account totally and open a new one. What a PAIN.

    HUGS to you, Lana.

I came in from church one night and was grabbed from behind with a gun to my head. As I screamed another guy wearing a mask came from the carport with a gun. I was taken screaming into my house. My husband was tied to a bar stool with a telephone cord they had ripped out and one stood behind me with a gun to my head while the other one ramshacked our home. Drawers were pulled out, mattresses taken off the beds closets opened and stuff thrown out. My home was literally destroyed by them.
I thank God everyday they didn't shoot us. They only took $15 from my billfold and my camera. I had taken the sim card and batteries out so they only got an empty camera. They ripped all the phones off the wall and left on foot.

I do not go out at night anymore, unless my husband is with me. I am still scared after 2 years. I felt so violated.

I am so sorry your home was robbed. I can truthfully say I know how you feel. ((((((hugs))))) from another victim.

I'm also sorry this happened to you. I saw on some home improvement show recently that window AC's are easily pushed in for easy access to homes. Scary. Most important is that you were not at home at the time and are OK. Things can be replaced but you can not. Kudos to your local Police, they sound like nice and caring people, as most of them are. Sorry Lana...yes I know what it is like...Our home was broken into several years ago.

Denny has always had quite a few guns. They took all of his guns except his black powder guns. (police said they probably didn't want those because they are not good "street" guns)
They knew right where the guns were kept and also where we stashed our cash. They got all of the cash too.
We later found out one of the boys our son brought home told some other guys where everything was.

As far as waiting until Monday to call your bank...Denny left the check book in his truck once and it was broke into. They got the check book and went on a spending spree Sat. morning. We called that morning and got the checking account shut down...Try calling. Most banks are open on Sat. morning.

Oh my gosh!! I am so sorry Lana. I've been violated (I use that word because that's exactly what it is) twice in my lifetime. Both times it really destroyed my sense of security for a long time. I feel for you and I hope they catch the beasts!! No one was caught in my case but I believe you create Karma as you live your life, so they have been taken care of in ways I'll probably never know.

Take care and reach out to friends and tell them your story. You need your support circle right now.

Lana, I know the feeling. Last year my house was broken into and my wedding rings stolen. It is a horrible, sickening feeling to come home and realize someone has been in your house. The one who did it, was a guy who worked for me. Someone I had treated as kindly as if he were my own son. Crack head.

Arosegirl, I would never get over that. How horrible. I am so sorry that happened to you.

I know a lot of you are opposed to having guns, but I keep a loaded pistol in reach at all times, and I would not hesitate to shoot someone who comes into my house. Everyone who knows me, knows that. I don't have children here. I am alone most of the time. It takes from 45 minutes to an hour and a half to get a sheriff deputy out here.

    last modified: 11 years ago

OMG you really had me alarmed for a second when you said you were robbed. There's a big difference between being robbed and being burglarized. Arosegirl was robbed, you were burgled. Not to sound uncaring, but I was very concerned for your physical well-being and it is a relief that you're OK physically and weren't attacked.

Now that my heart is calming down, I do fully understand what you're going through. I've been burglarized twice. Well, my house that is, my vehicles have been broken into a couple times too I guess but that's not the same feeling as when your home has been invaded. You have private things in your home and don't like someone going through all your drawers and the like. Plus the mess that often accompanies it.

My first burglary was when I was out of town. (I think I know who was involved in it too but it doesn't really matter.) My dad was coming home one night and had trouble with the lights on his car. The police pulled him over and he said his son lives close by and he was going to come over here so the police escorted him to my place and he saw the front door open. They looked in and saw a pile of my stereo stuff stacked near the door, called for backup, K9 and the like. Well, to make a long story shorter, it appeared that they were interrupted. Could have been that close to catching them. They dumped out drawers and made quite a mess. And I didn't sleep well for a long, long time. I still am nervous when I leave town. Especially nervous when I come home after being out of town. About a block away my heart starts pumping like it did when I read the title! LOL But really, it's a sick feeling. You want to think you should be safe in your home but you're not. And I don't mess with timers anymore. They took them too! And yes, air conditioners are a way many gain entrance. It all depends on how securely it's installed. For me, it's less work for them to break a window or kick in the door than to knock out my ac so I don't fear that entrance.

And a second time burgled it was clear to me that they wanted one thing, the info in my computer. They took a few other things but not much. They even searched and took my backup tapes! They weren't to bright and didn't get what they wanted since I keep sensitive stuff offsite. With what was going on at the time it gave me a pretty good idea who did that break-in too, but again, not enough proof. And then all the reminders of insecurity and was just getting comfortable at leaving home for a while.

I'd tell you to relax, but from experience, I know it's hard. Breathe deep. They just wanted material things. It wasn't personal, and they likely didn't choose your home because of you, rather it looked like an easy mark to them or just the only or best option to them at the time. The odds are good that they won't be back. I did the same thing with sleeping with the lights on. Did that for a long time. Do what you need to do to feel more comfortable. Believe one thing: You will feel better and safer. It'll take time. I had never needed a "Tums" in my life until the night of my first burglary. But I used them a lot for quite a while.

If the weather is nice, sit in front of your house. Move around in it. Refamiliarize yourself with it. Look around and remind yourself how long you were without an incident and it should help you feel more confident.

Oh, and then comes dealing with the insurance company! I won't go into that. Hope your experience is far better than mine!

Just please folks, watch your language! Don't scare me like this! LOL

Lana, I'm really saddened that you had to endure this, but I'm very relieved it wasn't as bad as I first thought. Take care of yourself.

O so sorry! Those dirty rats! I hope they are caught -- unlikely, I know, but it could happen!

Our burglers were 'selective' -- no mess, in and out in a flash, taking only jewelry. DH was walking the dog. I was in the jet tub. Never saw any of it again.

It must be soooo easy to get drug money this way. You don't need a 'fence' anymore. Just show up at one of these heavily advertised "Sell your Gold and Coins" places. They don't ask where you got the goods. Send your Grandma; they won't question her. (Sorry, I'm venting!)

How scary for you Lana and the rest of you who have experienced being burgled or robbed. I am glad to know though you weren't home when they broke.

My rental house was broken into when my sister and her 2 teen aged girls lived in it. Lucky they weren't home at the time but the poor dog was beaten and kicked out of the house and everything of value plus the kids clothes were all taken. My sister abandoned the house after that and never went back in.

I hope the police catch the people who did this so that you can have some peace of mind.

We were robbed twice while living in CA. My DH was deployed with the navy and just the kids and I were there.
MEGA terrifing stuff. After that I ended up with bear spray under my pillow, and a tire iron and baseball bat by the bed in my teenagers room.

Believe me, when we came back to the Island I almost got out of the car and kissed the bridge.

Even though we are super safe, we have a big lab with a bigger bark; as well as the usual and some unusual precautions.

Lana, it's your choice, but I sure feel more secure knowing at least I had some protection, the police always say a barking dog is your best start!

People talk about "the cost of crime" and the true cost of crime is a lot more than dollars. Granlan, I'm so sorry to read that you went through this. It's heart-wrenching and awful.

My car's been broken into three times in three years, and while I know that's *nothing* like having your HOME broken into, I know that everytime I approach my car now, I hold my breath and say a prayer it hasn't been ransacked...again.

I hope the cops are able to recover some of the stolen merchandise. More than anything, I hope you're able to recover from the upset of all this mess.
