Grant started kindergarten!!!

Hi Everyone..sorry I've been pretty MIA lately. I dont come her much but thought I'd check in and say hello. There are so many new names here so alot of you probably wont know who I am. For everything I've missed around her...congratulations, welcome, my condolences, happy birthday, happy anniversary, and whatever else there might be that I missed!! Hope everyone is doing great and has enjoyed their summer!

So an update on us...

Grant started kindergarten today. Can you even believe it? I know I can't. These past 5 years have gone by so fast and so much has changed. He wasn't really looking forward to going and struggled this morning when we dropped him off but he held it together and ended up really enjoying his day. His teacher is incredible so I'm sure he'll have a great year.

Camryn starts preschool next month. She's 2.5 now and is outgoing and funny and strikes up a conversation with anyone and everyone she sees. Total opposite from her shy brother. She'll be fine going to preschool and will probably be teaching the class in no time. LOL

Oh, my gosh, Stephanie, it's so amazing to realize that Grant is in kindergarten! I remember the struggles you had conceiving, and how much pain and sympathy I felt for you because of the miscarriages I'd had. I remember when the doctor told you that you had most likely lost the pregnancy but you had an innate feeling that you hadn't -- and you were so, so right! I remember being in Hawaii and shopping for the surprise baby shower for you and how shocked and surprised you were. And I remember how blessed we all felt that you had shared your whole journey with us.

And then beautiful little Camryn came along (not without more struggles on your part) and how happy she made all of us, too.

Your children are beautiful, and we can see how much they are loved, and how much they love each other. Thank you so much for sharing these photos and updates with us!!

Thanks for sharing the pictures Stephanie... the kids are just beautiful and it is hard to believe 5 years have come and gone and now Grant is school bound.

I volunteered with a school that thought planters would be a good learning experience for the students. But the deaf-eared project leaders were not interested in what the experienced gardeners had to say. The children ended up growing a bumper crop of 3' tall weeds. They filled the planters with good, but weed seed-filled soil. There was no plan for regular weeding; the teachers weren't gardeners. No plan was in place. They asked us to help after the weeds were a 1.5' tall, and we tried, but we could not figure out what the students had planted or if anything they put in was even growing. And the suggestion to pull it all out and start over was met with looks of horror. The students didn't use the planters again. I think a teacher planted some flowers in the front two, just to keep them from being such an eyesore. Edit: I got called away to plant a tree and posted before finishing. I didn't mean to sound negative. I just wanted your school to think about the after-construction maintenance period, too. Hmm. I suppose you could. Add a drain and a trap. Yes, that's what we did - 2in line & trap, shower drain on top. Where does your flood water discharge to? Do you have a sump with pump to make it go vertical? Or does it go to daylight? There are no drain tiles or sumps any place. I don't think the builders thought of it 130 yrs ago, and with our elevation, exterior flooding is extremely rare (other than the possible freak snowstorm and fast thaw causing really high hydrostatic pressure on the house). Before the river could reach my door downtown Omaha would be about 10 stories deep, I'm 150ft over the flood plain. This is really for "just-in-case of interior flooding". It's connected to the household drain waste. Will it be connected to the shower drain line? No. It's on its own wye. It's connected to the main line about 2 ft away on the 4in nearly horizontal run (1/4in per ft) that is on the way to exiting the house. If so, any chance of an overflow in one drain backing up through the other? Any chance of sewage back up, ie, will you need a check valve? I think a check valve isn't the worst idea - I asked about one at one time, but I might have been asking about one right at the zone where the 4in main leaves the house (as in a whole house protector at the entry point for any backflow from outside). But I didn't think about possible problems of back pressure from a slow inside line or again that freak exterior backup (everything that's horizontal in the basement is pitched is at least 1/4in per ft, but not much more - the main line is just barely under the bottom of the slab). He just glued up the last pipes yesterday and backfilled them all today - I am betting this might make him a wee bit cranky, but I'll bring it up! Better to be cranky now, than for both of us to be REALLY CRANKY when we have to tear out concrete and tile later. Quick update: Oh happy news! I just discovered Flood Guards! So he won't have to tear out his new pipes and we'll have a backflow protector on that line. Any other concerns? - I'll have 2 standpipes (one for the washer, and one for the water softener - obviously both of those are over the flood plain of the basement sinks & tub) and a bathtub. Do any of those need backflow protection? The tub? (I once lived in a house that had a backup into the tub - yuck.) The bathtub line is on a wye about 2ft off the main too - just a little downstream of the floor drain & on the other side on the main. This is why I ask so many questions. Agreed. This isn't the time to debate the benefits and cultural mores of extended nursing. The OP was very specific. And I also agree that the function of kindergarten has changed. My cousin's daughter was expected to know how to read and write her own name, address, and several other things before entering kindergarten. Many districts are opting for full day kindergarten, teaching basic math skills, and implementing pretty advanced curriculum. When I was in kindergarten (I'm 28) it was about not running with scissors, waiting in line, and practicing tracing letters. Not only have the academics changed, but, in the course of that change, the amount of time spent on socio/emotional development has been shortened. If she's not at the same level of emotional development and social skills as other 4 - 5 year olds, then it may be appropriate to hold her back, send her to preschool, and work on those skills for a year. I had a Nov. birthday, and was one of the older people in my class. I can't remember that age -- either way -- was a big deal, except maybe when we were starting to drive. By high school, though, some kids will have been held back, so even if you start her late she won't be the oldest by much out of her original class, and there will likely be older kids who are repeating a grade. I really wouldn't let being the oldest/youngest be a determining factor. I also wouldn't let her start and then pull her out. In the long run, that's going to be more detrimental than helpful. It seems like delaying kindergarten is fairly common and accepted for boys. I'm wondering if some of the reaction is a little different because this is a girl?

I've had to make this decision for three of my four kids. It was a different decision each time. Have you talked to her preschool teacher? First child - birthday after cutoff. Meticulous and organized, and (academically) would have been fine starting early. But also pretty shy, and not very confident, so I'm glad she's among the older kids in her grade - I know it has helped her socially. Straight A's and tall for her age, and she sometimes complains that I should have started her early. But I think she's where she should be. Second child - birthday before cutoff. Impulsive and immature, so I would have held him back had he not been reading on his own at 4, and shown some early math skills. I was worried that he would be a problem in class if he were not challenged. I think he seemed immature to me, compared with his older sister, but I worried less after seeing the other boys in his grade, who also tended to be fidgety and less mature. He's doing great this year in school (fifth grade), but we have a lot of problems with him at home. I think he's just a more difficult child. The only place he would have benefitted from being held back is sports, because he is pretty decent, but would stand out more if he were playing with kids in the next grade down. Not a reason to hold a child back, though! Third child - March birthday. What a relief - no decision! So glad he is not any younger, though, because he could not read at all in kindergarten. My older two learned to read gradually, but with him, something finally "clicked" when he started first grade, and he's been fine since. But it was a little frustrating for him in kindergarten that he knew the letters and sounds like the other kids in his class, but was given easier books to bring home since he wasn't reading yet. Fourth child - birthday after cutoff. Started her early (last fall), because she has always played well with the older girls in the neighborhood, and tends to be a little bossy and/or condescending with the younger girls. Loves school, is doing well, and comes home from school, only to play "school" with the neighbor girls. Her teacher says that she fits right in with the other kids, and that she would never guess she is a little younger. So far, so good. I don't think any of us can say what is right for your child. For me it was helpful to volunteer in preschool regularly to see them with other kids. I think a lot of kids with "cutoff" birthdays would be fine either way - they are pretty resilient. Our elementary school screens all incoming kindergarteners and will make a recommendation that they start/wait if you ask. So talk to your elementary school - they will probably be helpful, since they want your daughter to do well in school, too! Sorry so long - this has been a big issue for me. Should have planned better and had them all born in the winter!

Your children are just like my 2 youngest grandchildren. Michael is shy and also starts Kindgarten on September 6 (so it should be interesting to see how he does) and Paige who is 3 is very outgoing and will go anywhere. She also starts pre-school on September 6th.

The pics are adorable. How time flies.

It's hard to believe that Grant is old enough to go to school. Like Lindsey, I remember all the problems and then the joys of the medical miracles. Your two children are absolutely gorgeous, and the love bestowed upon them shows clearly on their faces. Thanks for sharing them with us.

How do you spell a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e? Camryn is so cute-with her looks and personality she will be a star. And Grant reminds me of the day I put my "baby" on the bus for kindergarten. She was crying, and stuck by her little friend Paul who was also in tears. She was fine by the time she came home. She came bouncing off the bus telling me how great school was! Thanks so much for checking in, Steph!

I just love it when you post pictures of your little ones. The picture of Grant standing on the post made me tear up a little. He's so sweet and such a blessing.

You can tell Camryn is outgoing just by her expressions. She's just too cute!

Thanks for sharing with us. I think I was a lurker when you were expecting Grant, but I remember praying a lot for you.

Your house will be a little quiet later this week, but I know you'll find plenty to keep you busy! If you run out of ideas, you could make me some cake pops. LOL!

I think the first day of school for a first child is so exciting. What a milestone! Grant will be fine, as you know. Those kdg teachers can charm the most suspicious child. You are sweet to check in here and keep us up to date.

The right teacher can make all the difference in the world of how a child views school/education for the rest of their time in schools. I'm glad Grant got a good one.
