I'm now in the 21st Century computer wise!

Until yesterday, I was on Windows 98 with dialup.

Recently I had a chance to buy a used but better computer with Windows Vista. I'm now using DSL. What a fun and interesting change! :)

Wish me luck as I explore this "new world". :)

I can now log into Facebook and see pics of the kids and grandkids and that's a good thing. :)

However, I still have the old puter and it's working at half the usual pace. And here I thought it would be so easy to export and/or transfer to the newer puter. :(

Any suggestions? And thanks y'all!

Congratulations! I have Fios DSL and love it! Still on Windows XP. We upgraded to Vista a few years ago, paid the Geek Squad to give us back XP.

You'll see a world of difference between 98 and Visa, not to mention DSL!!

Dear Jeff, I will be there I will bring the drinks but after all I have been through this summer I would like to just enjoy and not work....I will do clean up and such but I would rather not register or have to do during the swap. So count me in as the clean up crew. I'll be the janitor. Also by the way, I am still offering my house as the first West TN Swap point if anyone is interested......We will do it the weekend before your Oct 21st so that will be Oct 15 if everyone wants too....... I agree that it's the orangy-gold-yellowy paint that seems to be throwing everything off. I wonder what a warm blue might do for the room? It may be a bit tricky to get the right shade - you need enough warmth for the cabinets, but your counter reads slightly cooler. With the garnets that are in your counter, you could pick up the reddish-wine color and use that as an accent...that can work well with a blue. Usually with colors it seems like it's more about getting the right undertones rather than the right color family. You've got oak cabinets - I'm assuming they aren't going anywhere for a while, so you need to make peace with them. I think that with the right paint color, you can make the cabinets and the granite work. There is always the gel-stain option and if changing them I'd probably look that route. I don't think that painting the oak is a good idea since it tends to look like...painted oak. And that's a look that I really don't care for. You mentioned that the ceiling is changing - does that mean that you're putting in some can lighting as well as the pendants? I like the linear tiles...but not with your cabinets. Their style is more contemporary/transitional than what I think your cabinets can muster...the cabinets have a much more traditional look so you might do better with something a bit more classic in the tile line.

Yes it does which I like. Plus our new plan allows for texting, so we won't be charged for messages anymore. It'll take a bit of getting used to but I'm looking forward to using it.

You may just need to purchase some more memory for your computer to bring it up to speed. All the computer stores sell it.

Yayagal, I'm thinking you're right and will look into it.

Jasdip, I'll be here and many other places now that I have this new "toy". Some days the old puter was so darn slow, all I could do was a little emailing and play solitaire.

Jannie, the gal who sold me this Windows Vista was thinking I'd like it better than XP; hope she's right.

probably one of the easiest ways to transfer your files, pictures and stuff from the old one to the new one would be to pick up one of the little usb flash drives and move the stuff from the old pc to that flash drive then plug the flash drive into your new pc's usb port and take the stuff from it on to the new pc. I buy the little flash thumb drives at walmart and big lots, you can get them in various sizes, they are pretty inexpensive.

In my opinion, XP is better than Vista. Some of my professional friends skipped Vista. They waited until Windows 7 was available and jumped from XP to Win 7.

There is a caveat however. The operating systems (OPs) between XP and 7 are quite different and a direct transfer can not be made. Much of the software written for the x86 environment will not run in Viata or Win 7. Check the compatibilty list at MicroSoft to see if your existing software will run on the new system. If not, you will need to replace it.

Your major problem may be old email files. A new email utiltiy will be needed. Choose one that can import your old email files and address lists. Keep your old computer running until you have made the transfer.

The other main transfer is your "favorites" list of web site links for the browser.

Oh dear Jemdandy, this is sounding so time consuming and more complicated than I realized.

Even with things are they are, this faster computer is so much more enjoyable. :)
