Any advice for DD?

Hi everyone. My 19-y-o DD works part-time at an office supply store in California, and has been there a couple months. A couple weeks ago DD said she owed another young female co-worker lunch and co-worker was going to Taco Bell to pick it up. DD had no cash so gave co-worker her credit card (?????!!!!!) to pay for the lunch. Co-worker returned with food and gave DD the credit card back.

Yesterday, co-worker asked DD once again to use her credit card to pick up lunch. DD gives it to her and forgets to ask for card back when co-worker returns. DD realized last night that she'd forgotten to get her card back but felt that co-worker could be trusted.

Today co-worker does not show up for work. DD text-messaged her and got no reply. She went online to check her credit card statement and found that co-worker made several unauthorized charges to stores, including a liquor store. She called in to work later in the day and said she couldn't come in because she was "messed up."

DD called the bank immediately after discovering the charges and cancelled her credit card and explained what happened. The bank is going to send her a fraud form of some sort to fill out, and she won't be responsible for those charges.

The store where DD works wants her to ask co-worker for her card back the minute she comes in tomorrow, and they will have it on camera. DD is wondering if she should report this to the police or if there is anything they can do. Should this be left up to the bank? It's not like the girl stole her purse. She willingly gave the girl her card, but only authorized the purchase of lunch.

DD told her boss she will not work with this girl. She isn't sure if they plan on firing her tomorrow or not, but she's wondering what she should do.

Does anyone have any advice? (other than her never giving anyone her credit card again!!)

Yes, she should ask for the card when she returns to work right away. The girl stole from her, plain and simple. Did you note that the bank is filling out a fraud report with her help? Sounds like they might be reporting it. I would not hesitate to report the theft to the police too.

Your DD should never give anyone her credit card.

Report it to the police, certainly. Get it on video if the store is willing.

BUT!! I'm sorry, your daughter brought this on herself. She gave her credit card to someone else!! Did you not teach her, does she not know, that this was a huge mistake? Not for lunch, not for anything!

Sounds like once the panel is installed, that is the support, no foam necessary in that area. It just gets back to no one should have stepped on it. Sounds like your builder has a handle on it gettng it repaired. The foam process i mentioned is usually sprayed down all throughout the base before setting the tub and while the foam is still "wet", before it starts expanding and curing, the tub is placed and weighted down. The foam envelopes all hollows on the bottom so that there is a solid base. Some tubs have built in supports at the bottom, most dont, so it's a good idea to get a little extra support under there. Your whirlpool tub might have it's own means of support, so no foam necessary or other means. I think your builder is on the right track by repairing rather than replace, but as mentioned before, it will probably be re-sprayed , as spot repairs are extremely hard to match up. There's an outfit here that refinishes any tub surface and when done, looks new carrying a ten year warranty. Hopefully you have a competent outfit there. If not, strive for replacement.

My oldest wet his bed almost nightly until about 6 months ago. He's 13 1/2. I'd wake him up and literally walk him to the bathroom, where he'd stand there and sway back and forth, go walk into his closet, pee in there, then head back to bed. Sometimes he'd use the trash can. He'd have no memory of it in the morning. He was such a heavy, heavy sleeper. Sometimes it was best just to leave him in bed, at least I knew where he had the accident. We all laugh about it now, but he had the same problems, couldn't have sleep outs or sleepovers. Even now if he's going to sleep out, he won't drink anything after 7:00. He's still a very heavy sleeper. I had the same problem as a kid, so did his dad. And we were both heavy sleepers as kids. My son, also, unfortunately inherited my bladder size, so that doesn't help. The pediatrcian just advised that we wait it out and didn't give medication. I worry so much about my kids taking medications, and since this wasn't anything physically painful, we decided to wait it out. It took awhile, but things are fine. My younger two never had a problem, and both have bigger bladders than I do, I swear. They're not as heavy sleepers as the older one. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be (daily stripping of the bed, frustrated child). Personally, I'd try to wait it out if you can, although I don't believe the medication has any side effects you should be concerned about.

It seems like another trip to IKEA to purchase the Vittsjo (don't you just love all the names there?) will be coming up soon! Good point, joanie, about the rectangles already in the room and the potential for more rectangles with frames on the wall. She is happy with the way it's coming along. After she added the rug and the pillows, she said it feels homier. She is anxious to finish off the basics with the coffee table, a different lamp for the end table and something on the wall above the sofa so she can start planning a holiday open house! I think she'd eventually like to replace the rocking chair with an upholstered chair, but in the meantime, it's extra seating.

@joe - that was a fun thread to read, thanks for sharing. JC in that thread chose to start this healing process in mid-July but I didn't find the reason of his timing. Given the condition of the grass (mostly like the first pic in thread), and where I am (east coast, Toronto), with weather right now being around 40F at night and 70F during the day, with showers throughout the week, which month should I be starting the same process JC took? @mishmosh - ok cool this makes me at ease, I have the core aeration and fertilizers scheduled within the next 4 weeks @shivece - just signed up to a lawn service, surprisingly not nearly as expensive as I thought given other type of contractors cost thousands even for small jobs in GTA. The challenge now is coordinating my own efforts with the lawn service because I found out that even the best lawn services in our area does things in batch, not tailored towards specific houses. They schedule things based on optimal business operations. @charpell - makes sense, what's interesting is that no one in the neighborhood seem to water their lawn where I live, I never saw a sprinkler or manual watering, just cutting and fertilizers. Last year was the first time we were in the house so I thought it was just me not knowing what people normally do around here to keep the lawn healthy but this year I observed enough to see I was the oddball for sure

I would definitely report it to the police. Even though she gave her the card doesn't mean the girl didn't steal from her. Who knows how far the bank will take it so its up to your DD to see that the authorities are notified if she wants the girl punished.

I'd get the card back, and tell her if she doesn't make the charges good, she'll be filing a fraud charge on her. I wonder how much she's charged on it?
Then I'd tell the boss I will not work with her again.

No, Leslie, I would fill out the report and press charges no matter what. A crime has been committed. She should not get away with it. And the card owner will get stuck with the bills. Report it, report it, report it.

If she does not report it, the bank will bill her DD.

Go to your police dept and make a report. Find out the gril's address. Her workplace has nothing to do with this.

Considering it's odd that you would give someone your credit card to go buy lunch, I wouldn't think it's such a big stretch for the girl to think maybe a couple additional charges would be ok too.

I'd have her ask the girl for her card back and ask how she was intending to handle the additional charges. Who knows, she may walk in with cash in hand to give your daughter (I doubt it but you never know). I'd give her a chance to pay; but if she tries to deny it or gives any slack, I would definitely file a report. Do you think this girl was dumb enough to not think your daughter would notice the extra charges? I'm just not seeing how she thought she would get away with it, so I'm assuming there's a chance the girl was just using the card for convenience sake and always intended on paying for the charges.

I cant believe that! Some people have their nerve. Report it! She cancelled the card so it doesnt matter if the girl gives it back or not. I would however ask her for it. When she gives it back or says she lost it or whatever excuse she comes up with, I would let her know that I filed charges with the police. I really doubt she is coming back to work now. I dont believe she was using the card for convenience either. After all, when she asked for it at work, seems to me that is a tell all hint she didnt have any money. We live and learn, consider this a lesson learned.

The girl had charged things at 5 or 6 places before DD found out about it and cancelled the card. She talked to the bank again, and the lady she spoke with said to report it to the police as well. The girl tried again to use the card after it had been cancelled and the charge was denied. I really wonder if she'll go in to work today or not. DD has since found out that she's on probation for something. I don't believe she had any intention of paying DD back. Regardless, DD has been told that she will not be responsible for those charges, so that's a good thing. What happens to the girl now is not her concern, however, she refuses to work with her again, and I don't blame her for that.
DD has definitely learned a lesson from this.

If the girl is on probation for something, filing a police report and prosecuting would surely revoke her probation, since she has committed another crime.

File the report. File the report.

I doubt the other girl will be back.

Your DD has definitely learned a lesson the hard way! 19-year-olds might be considered "adults," but they still have a lot to learn, don't they? I'm sorry for all the trouble and know you and DD must be so upset. Let us know how it goes. The girl is a thief.

But what happens to the girl IS her concern--she's got to follow through on this, to make sure this thief is properly punished for her stealing.

Make sure your dd realizes that she needs to do everything possible (fraud report, reporting to the police), that it's her responsibility as a member of society to do what she can to stop someone who is preying on others.

19-year-olds can be pretty naive, can't they?

I think sometimes it's because teenagers are SO attuned to "fairness," and they hate to think ill of someone, even hypothetically. Especially hypothetically.

(as you talk about it, maybe point out that one reason adults don't loan their credit cards even to someone they have every reason to trust is that it's a way to protect the other person from temptation or false accusation--it's not rude to not loan someone your card; it's actually protecting them)

She will hopefully have learned her lesson, and she's lucky. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if some credit agreements would hold her responsible for someone to whom she gave her card.

Your daughter may not be ABLE to press criminal charges.

If the financial charges are taken off her bill by the bank, then she is not the victim of the crime anymore, and she has no legal standing except as a witness. The BANK or the CREDIT CARD COMPANY is now the victim, and they don't bother to prosecute this sort of stuff generally. It's not worth the money.

*Maybe* the bank will be more interested if it's easy to prove who did it. But since your DD *gave* her the card, it might be hard to prove theft; it'll be one person's word against another.

I believe for the bank to pursue it there will have to be a police report filed.

I remember that when I was young ...

... one didn't lend one's fountain pen (reemmber them?) - it was considered rather gauche to ask to borrow someone's!!
