I noticed your post on the I'll show you mine thread.

Welcome. This is a great bunch of people. Pull up a chair to the table and tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm one of the few guys around here. I keep busy with a landscaping business in southeastern Minnesota. Once in a while you see Bigbaby post something; she's my better half. We have 5 kids, a daughter, 26 and the boys are 24, 21, 19 and 14. The 2 oldest kids are married and just the youngest one is still in the nest.

Oh, one last thing, the newbie brings chocolate.

Glad to help =) First, I don't want to imply you must keep the soil very wet all summer. Rather, just as the soil is getting crumbly and dry an inch or two down, soak it for a good while until you have saturated the surrounding soil. You do not want to water it every day. And the supplemental watering you provide is only if you don't get natural rains. Now for your first question. If you can get it to grow some good long extensive roots by deep watering the first year, it will be MORE self sufficient next year. This is not a fast growing tree and takes some time to get used to its surroundings. You will nearly always want to supplement this tree in bad droughts in full sun in your zone even as it gets older. But don't worry, you will get a handle on its water needs as the two of you get to know each other. It will not be an every week watering affair after the first or second year. You could always plant another in the back if the front tree croaks. The back sounds like a much better location in your zone for this tree to me. As far as small flowering trees that do well in your area that is a little beyond my experience. Hopefully some Texans can chime in. The ones I am familiar with are Prunus mexicana, Cercis canadensis var. texana, Lagerstroemia spp, Cornus drummondii, and Crataegus marshallii. Below is a great resource for selecting trees that would do well where you live. And remember, during the first 1-2 years, you will have to water anything you plant until you get it established. Mindy, Next spring or early summer when the temps moderate enough to put the pots out for the summer, I will use a granular systemic with imidacloprid. I don't have the name on the tip of my tongue, but I read it on another forum and wrote it down somewhere. You won't need it until next summer, and in the meantime, I will look it up. I always hesitate to use a poison, especially a systemic which will affect all aspects of the plant, the flowers and the pollen, but since all my plants with the exception of one or two will have bloomed inside this winter, I won't worry that the pollen may be affected and harm the bees and other pollen loving insects. If I get a summer flower, I'll bring the plant inside until the flowering is over. I would hesitate to use this on bulbs planted in the ground for this very reason. The bees have enough problems of their own without me poisoning them. But as all my bulbs are in pots as I'm sure yours are also this shouldn't be a problem for us...This was really a problem for me this year, as I pulled maggot after maggot out of some of my bulbs. They're quite large and they can devastate a bulb..my husband couldn't believe his eyes when he first saw them. I usually keep my bulbs in different places all over the yard, including 2 decks and every location had a couple of eaten bulbs. I had a group of about 6 bulbs that earlier in the season had a thrip or some other sucking insect problem that left white marks on the leaves and we (husband) sprayed them and drenched them with a liquid systemic with imidacloprid and it did the trick.. all subsequent leaves were clear and no NFB. But, the liquid is a pain in the neck to use and messy and not feasible for 150 pots, so next year it will be granules. Donna

Ok, BIL, I'm inspired again. Thanks much for the encouragement. And one thing for sure - the view and the river access are not available in the city - not at that price. We'll talk more later. girlgroupgirl, I'm surprised that the vinegar/orange oil would not be considered organic. I know that the 20% vinegar is not something to handle lightly but I think our standards here might have more to do with how the product breaks down in the environment and from that standpoint, it should be considered organic. But 20% vinegar is topically toxic, that is true. And yes, termites are a problem here. In fact, you have to have a termite inspection done in order to sell a house. Carpenter ants are a problem. I have noticed that as the biodiversity in my yard has increased, the fire ants have decreased although I'm not sure if that's the reason. I used to get rid of them just by spraying the mounds with my water hose. Then they leave but they just go to my neighbors. But nobody around here complains much about them. I think they went to the 'burbs' of Austin where people use more chemicals. When there is a lot of rain and flooding, I do hear people complain that they all mound up together on floating wood, etc. and you'll see these floating fire ant mounds in the lakes and shores and you have to steer clear of them. Pretty funny, huh? Do y'all have organic pest control companies in Atlanta? That is really interesting about your friend's workmen not being as sensitive to poison ivy. We used to have a bunch around here but we've managed to get it under control in our yards. But our neighborhood park and creek are full. I was never allergic until I was in the landscape business and cleaned out a long row of Azaleas not realizing that I was pulling out poison ivy. Yikes! I was covered and have been allergic since. TECNU is the product to use. Very effective.

Our greenhouse is 10 x 20 feet covered in corrugated plastic sheets. (Bob knows the correct name for the material, but he's not here right now.) They are not clear like polycarbonate so there is no need for any kind of shade cloth. It has two natural gas heaters. I don't know how expensive it is to heat since we put it up the very first summer we lived in this house, so we don't know what the energy costs on the house without the greenhouse would be. When we got the new furnace put in, the man from the furnace company said it wouldn't be as much as we might think. The greenhouse is not on a permanent foundation but it is anchored in the ground. We have had no issues with wind even though it can get quite windy here. We have water for the greenhouse, but no electricity. Bob runs an extension cord from the house for the fans. The heaters work without blowers. We do freeze pollen. We have over a hundred vials of pollen frozen from last season, but many more from the previous seasons. We put the pollen in microcentrifuge tubes and store them in a container made for the tubes. Every summer we set up a table in the family room to dry the pollen. Here is a picture of the storage box.

Well my goodness what a welcome wagon we have here. I was shocked to see the post with my name on it, and then read all the sweet greetings from you all. Thank you Ron for posting.

All I have in the house is midget toosie rolls, but your welcome to them. Or I could make some yummy brownies. lol

Okay, a little bit about myself. I was born here in Alabama but left the south when I was two and moved to Michigan. Where my husband and I owned a automotive business (manufacturing) in the suburbs of Detroit. After his death I sold everything and moved back to start anew. But that was about fifteen years ago, oh my.

About five years ago I bought an historcial home here in a small town much like Mayberry. We have festivals, parades, eye contact, and homemade everything.

I never had children, but they say, "You don't miss what you never had". But I do adore them.

I love interior design and I am mad about antique's. I joined because I was starting to grow antique rose's but lost interest.

I am turning this into a novel, sorry. Now your turn.
