I noticed your post on the I'll show you mine thread.

Welcome. This is a great bunch of people. Pull up a chair to the table and tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm one of the few guys around here. I keep busy with a landscaping business in southeastern Minnesota. Once in a while you see Bigbaby post something; she's my better half. We have 5 kids, a daughter, 26 and the boys are 24, 21, 19 and 14. The 2 oldest kids are married and just the youngest one is still in the nest.

Oh, one last thing, the newbie brings chocolate.

I'm a widow with three grown kids, two of them living, and the house that you liked is in Pennsylvania. :-)

Ok, BIL, I'm inspired again. Thanks much for the encouragement. And one thing for sure - the view and the river access are not available in the city - not at that price. We'll talk more later. girlgroupgirl, I'm surprised that the vinegar/orange oil would not be considered organic. I know that the 20% vinegar is not something to handle lightly but I think our standards here might have more to do with how the product breaks down in the environment and from that standpoint, it should be considered organic. But 20% vinegar is topically toxic, that is true. And yes, termites are a problem here. In fact, you have to have a termite inspection done in order to sell a house. Carpenter ants are a problem. I have noticed that as the biodiversity in my yard has increased, the fire ants have decreased although I'm not sure if that's the reason. I used to get rid of them just by spraying the mounds with my water hose. Then they leave but they just go to my neighbors. But nobody around here complains much about them. I think they went to the 'burbs' of Austin where people use more chemicals. When there is a lot of rain and flooding, I do hear people complain that they all mound up together on floating wood, etc. and you'll see these floating fire ant mounds in the lakes and shores and you have to steer clear of them. Pretty funny, huh? Do y'all have organic pest control companies in Atlanta? That is really interesting about your friend's workmen not being as sensitive to poison ivy. We used to have a bunch around here but we've managed to get it under control in our yards. But our neighborhood park and creek are full. I was never allergic until I was in the landscape business and cleaned out a long row of Azaleas not realizing that I was pulling out poison ivy. Yikes! I was covered and have been allergic since. TECNU is the product to use. Very effective.

Oh wow, how exciting I really hope mine reblooms. I wonder why the info under it doesn't list rebloom. Mine finished blooming over a month ago, should I fertilize them to encourage rebloom? I have Superthrive which I mix with liquid Miracle Gro for alot of my plants. And thank you Kay for the warm welcome! I have another question hum how to word it... Do daylily seeds come true? My stella put out tons of seeds well before any of my other daylilies bloomed so they were pollinated with their own pollen. Will those seeds germinate to be Stellas also or is the seed variable on its own and thus be a different plant? Also this is the first I have heard of "Mary Jane." You've peaked my curiosity, now I'll have to go see. And Kay is there a place that I can find maybe a post on 'post etiquette'? On a different forum these guys were having an all out argument over one accusing another of hi-jacking their post. They were lashing one another. It was terrible. So I definitely don't want to commit a post faux pas and be verbally assaulted for it! Thank you Kay! Rena'

Snoozy, you are welcome. I had not noticed your comments as I've been dealing with a hurricane. All is well now. Bark for many growers is desirable. I did use it in the past but now prefer lava rock. If that is nor available see if you can find small rocks around 3/4" in diameter. Plus or minus. With rocks or lava rock it is necessary to water more frequently. I water every day if it does not rain. Rocks should be easier to find...and free!

The powdery mildew on the foliage is a minor issue and is somewhat common on Jane and the other hybrid magnolias belonging to the Little Girl series bred at the U. S. Arboretum in the 1950s. After the tree sheds its leaves this autumn, I'd collect them and dispose of them so no spores overwinter on the foliage. As late as it is in the growing season now, I wouldn't bother spraying the plant. Spraying wouldn't reverse what already is there or make it go away or anything. Spraying works better as a preventive to keep powdery mildew from appearing and getting established. If it bothers you (and I do understand your sentimental attachment to this tree planted in memory of your dear daughter) to think of it spreading more, you could spray with either a baking soda spray or neem oil or a commercial fungicide whose label says it can be used to prevent the spread of PM just to see if you can keep it from spreading more, but there's no guarantee at this point that any spray would prevent its spread (short of removing all the leaves) since it already is established. PM is common on some plants here late in the season when we are having high relative humidity in the air but when the ground itself is pretty dry, particularly on stressed plants or those with poor air circulation around them. Those conditions often exist together in dry autumn weather like we've had this year in most of Oklahoma. Unlike many other fungal diseases, PM doesn't really need wet foliage to thrive.

Well my goodness what a welcome wagon we have here. I was shocked to see the post with my name on it, and then read all the sweet greetings from you all. Thank you Ron for posting.

All I have in the house is midget toosie rolls, but your welcome to them. Or I could make some yummy brownies. lol

Okay, a little bit about myself. I was born here in Alabama but left the south when I was two and moved to Michigan. Where my husband and I owned a automotive business (manufacturing) in the suburbs of Detroit. After his death I sold everything and moved back to start anew. But that was about fifteen years ago, oh my.

About five years ago I bought an historcial home here in a small town much like Mayberry. We have festivals, parades, eye contact, and homemade everything.

I never had children, but they say, "You don't miss what you never had". But I do adore them.

I love interior design and I am mad about antique's. I joined because I was starting to grow antique rose's but lost interest.

I am turning this into a novel, sorry. Now your turn.
