I wouldn't use either of these. Instead use a light whose lens is recessed behind the light's rim, reducing its glare from the side. Here are a few at Home Depot: Prime 16 in. Black Integrated LED Metal Flush Mount Note that there are some canless recessed lights that don't require a lot of vertical space in the ceiling but have a deep baffle to prevent glare (example).

I think I‘d find something retro, or an old, antique looking fixture and update with paint. I looked up 1910 fixtures and could see so many cool styles on pinterest. Another idea is adding a ceiling medallion which can be painted. Though not sure if the ceiling cuts off a bit in the pic. Have fun!

The pendant lights and the dining light should be the "pretty" lights here. Sorry RL Relocation LLC, but "pretty" is subjective.

Ahhh Seattle, you must be some place where you use lights! These actually light up the room pretty well--it's not a super high ceiling. But you're probably right about just getting rid of them. When required (rarely), we do use task lighting. I think I'd like a fan in the middle though. Putting dinky low profile lights over the remaining electrical boxes would by my lazy way of not getting an electrician, a city inspection for the electrical work, and (worst of all) repainting the ceiling. I guess I'm more concerned with how it looks with the lights off than on, if that makes sense. I like those, Oly! White ones? *gasp!!* They come in green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I kind of love those. Maybe not for here--the flatter one is probably better. Are you familiar with that company? So much cool stuff...too bad this is too wide: If I accept that new lights are only meant to cover holes in the ceiling and to provide just enough light to get to another light switch in the middle of the night, it does open up options. I was trying to find low profile fixtures with impossibly high lumens to replace these lamps lightwise (and are less than 6.5" in diameter) which just doesn't quite work. So, how about bundling up the existing fixtures over the kitchen table (at the window end) and putting the innocuous flush fixtures over the other 2 holes? Give up the fan fantasy? Functionally, every winter I'd like better lighting over the table (although now that winter is over I won't care for several months). (I know photos would help but I'm shy. I just want my ceiling to be better!)
