I've had two from my garden, that I just ate warm with salt on them----maters are now at a stand still---duh!

I put crushed tater chips on most of my sandwiches--Yummie!

Who peels their tomatoes?

Too early for ours, but you're making me hungry for a tomato sandwich!

I don't peel them but I could go for a garden tomato right about now! It's a bit early in the season here - we haven't had the heat!

My Uncle Gene at the nursing home has one of the Topsy Turvey things with a tomato plant. We spied his first tomato on it last night! Its about the size of a grape! 'Maters are a long way off yet up here!
I don't peel mine, but I love them firm not moochy, with lots of salt and pepper!

I only peel them if the skins aren't pretty.

I think the tomatoes are especially good this year. We have been getting heirloom tomatoes from the farmer's market and they are sooooo good.

Glenda, do you ever go downtown to Pepper Place on Saturday for the farmer's market? There are fruits and veggies, baked goods, a band. It's fun.

Lots and lots of people with those topsy turvey plants in my area.

Too early here, but I'm excited about the little green ones I have. And no, I do not peel them. I did have a little cucumber right off the vine today, and it was so crisp and tasty.

Linda, have gone to Pepper Place quite a few times, but not this year.

They have a smaller rendition on Valleydale Rd, on Saturdays across from Jeff State. Haven't been to it either.

My father grew wonderful tomatoes in the late '40s in Illinois. I still remember one year he had huge yellow tomatoes that were so juicy. We would take one for a snack into the back yard with a salt shaker, lean over to avoid the juices dribbling all over us, and eat the whole thing. Soooo good.

And then there's fried green tomato BLT! Yumster!

Funny you should bring up tomatoes, as we had BLT's last nite for dinner. Tomatoes were right from our garden. Yummy.

I think I would like to try one of those topsy turvy plant growers. I would like to hear from someone who has one that has used it before I consider buying it though. I would like a first hand review from someone I feel is not trying to sell me anything. LOL

I have a Topsy Turvey tomato grower and my plant is full of blooms and a few very small tomatoes. My plant is a beef stake and I am looking forward to fried green tomatoes like I had in KY a couple of years ago. They were spicy.

I remember a vegetable vender used to come down the alley in Chicago and in the summer we'd get the most delicious tomatoes. Ah those sandwiches on white bread with salt and mayo...

When the first frost was predicted, Dad would go out and pick all the tomatoes from the plants. The green ones went in a paper sack and were sliced and fried for dinner as his treat. None of the rest of us particularly liked them fried. But except when the frost was predicted, we did not pick tomatoes till they were red and ripe.

I've had about four from our garden...early girls .We have 13 plants. Never peel them. Eat them warm from the garden with salt on them..Yum. There was an article in the paper about a wilt disease that is fatal to the plant. It came from plants bought at the Big Box stores and I think we got a couple from HD. But I don't know which ones.

loling! dd2 called and said dgd has been picking the green cherry tomaotes in her mini garden (just a patch by her patio) i think she's confusing them from the strawberries they had earlier...she'l be 2 in august...

Mine went in very late this year, so they're all still green. But I did stop by the farmer's market and pick up some homegrown, and they're ALMOST as good as growing them myself. LOL! I just love the flavor.

I don't normally peel my 'maters but one year, I don't know which variety I was growing, but the skins were so THICK and TOUGH that I did have to peel them. I didn't like biting into a piece in my salad or sandwich, and the skin was thick like that.

Oh, and you're right about that sandwich, Glenda. Tomatoes + mayo + crushed chips = THE BEST!

Yummy, nothing better than a home grown tomato. I have had only two from my garden so far. Salt and bite into it, what bliss!

Tomatoes are ripe in SW. Pa....I just had a toasted cheese, tomato and lettuce sandwich...Thought I had died and gone to heaven.....Which reminds me, better get the beans picked....

I've never peeled a tomato. I've never even heard of doing that, LOL.

Well if we ever get warm weather we might get red ones.
my SIL made a upside down. Took a moss lined basket, made a hole in it, put the tomato in it and hung it up on the edge of the house with 3 light chains. To keep the larger surface from drying out, we planted some herbs. Seems to be doing pretty good.

It is very hot here and the plants are suffering but I am loaded with tomatoes. I have been canning, and freezing not to mention eating them...I love to give them away also to my friends. At this very moment I have 7 pints of Annie's Salsa in my pressure cooker and will add them to my winter stash.

My mouth is watering. No idea when we'll be seeing any homegrown with this cool weather..especially these really cold nights.

When I make my 'tomato' sandwich, Glenda, I do peel them. This sandwich is NO bread, just two thick slices of tomato with a slice of bologna in between and a wee touch of mayo.

I'm growing four kinds of heirloom tomatoes, can't wait to get some to eat. I had five plants but one died, I think it had a blight. The other four look perfectly healthy.
