In a recent thread we talked about what's on our iPods and in our CD players. How about digging a little deeper?

Let's list our favorite types of music--but only the ones we actually listen to. For instance, I like some pop, some rock, some country, and oldies, but I rarely actively seek them out or buy those songs. So they won't be on my list.

For each kind of music on your list, tell us one or two (three maximum) of your favorite artists or composers for that genre. Got it? I'll start......

(in no particular order)

Jazz: Diana Krall, Paul Desmond/Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal

Classical: Mahler, Prokofiev, Mozart

Folk: Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan (is he still folk?)

Opera: Kiri Te Kanawa, Renee Fleming, any of the uber-tenors

Blues: BB King, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison

Unclassifiable: KD Lang, Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, choral music, Eva Cassidy, Linda Ronstadt

I feel as though I've leaving out 100 things......

I don't have such a varied list as you Susan. I'll stop at a fair and listen to most any type of music, but in the car and at home I am more particular.

Rock and Pop: The Fray, Linkin Park, Green Day, Snow Patrol, etc. I LOVE the new stuff. Guy bands mostly. I listen to this type of music 98% of the time.

New age: Enya

50's and 60's: Various stuff, no particular artists

I used to listen exclusively to country music from about age 25 to 40, now I never listen to it. A side effect of quitting smoking for me. Weird, huh?

I have a lot of wood sorrel (oxalis oregona), which I think the original poster has realized she has too. I have decided to let mine alone in one spot as it's in a bed I prefer to be easy care and is doing well with some skimmia and ferns. It's also contained by hardscape. I'm working to get it out of another bed where it is threatening to take over some heuchera and alchemilla. I would say be careful around plants you want to keep. I don't find it very easy to weed out as it has an incredible mass of spreading mat-like roots and every bit you leave behind grows again. It quickly out-competed some young japanese forest grass I had and even ajuga! In my experience, you can't really just pull it out -- you have to dig around to get the rootlets which can be a pain, depending on what else you have planted. It loves my rainy, cool climate. They planted quite a lot in the ravine next to me, trying to reestablish more native plantings and it has out-competed the native bleeding heart and a few other more delicate plantings. Only put it somewhere where you can be on top of maintenance a lot. I have a deciduous variety, but there is also an evergreen version (at least for my zone).

A couple of things about Oasis: It is the nursery industry's standard method of propagation, and can by purchased in sheets already pre-formed with a hole in each square. I found some on eBay after learning I had to buy a case of sheets from nursery suppliers. You can also buy big blocks from any florist, and I like it better because it's deeper and the cutting is more secure. Oasis is designed to wick moisture up to cut flowers, and I think it's more important to make sure the foam never dries out than worrying about it standing in water. (Of course, I live in the desert, so nothing stays wet for long.) Different species are willing to root at different times of year, according to the hormones in their systems, which is why some refuse to root when they're blooming, but will root (from woody cuttings) when their dormant, and others root anytime (soft cuttings, tip cuttings). You can experiment till you want to cry, or look up the specific plant and see how and when the professionals propagate it. My greatest discovery is Tea Tree Oil, a fungicide and bactericide, available in health food stores. A few drops in the water ABSOLUTELY prevent mold, fungus, and other diseases. It works on humans; I figured it would work with plants, too, and I haven't seen mold or damping off since. Good luck!

My Sea Pearl had bluish tones that turned greenish once in my home. Will they give you a sample? My stoneyard did not so I took a chance. Did you see the chart Karin_MT made up? Maybe you could go by her description of the various levels of quartzite. Will they let you do a water absorption test? The crystalline quartzite is easy to spot. Look at the names on the right, find one in your stoneyard and look for the grains, cross bedding, crystalline structure to see which one comes closest to looking like your stone. You might try either lemon juice or vinegar on a small paper towel in a zipper bag or maybe you could use an extra small empty hand sanitizer bottle. Don't ask...don't tell??? Don't forget to test it in different spots on the stone, not just one spot. Same with the glass test...use different spots. @pinkmountain, Here's an example of what kinds of things a listening advertising device can do. Today, I was having a casual conversation with some friends in the dining room where my now unplugged and vacant echo device is. I mentioned the irony and my disgust at how much pornography is on the Internet when compared to other great information which is also there. I remarked that I didn't understand where people got the time to mess around with all that, relating an experience I had with a class where the teacher was trying to demonstrate the value of the (at the time) new feature of video streaming, and most of what he was finding while casually nosing around, was pornographic. Later when talking more about the dumbing down of our culture, I remarked how awful I thought the movie "Book Club" was and how ridiculous I thought the plot premise was, that such accomplished mature professional woman would be interested in that book, and then went on to talk about how silly I thought S&M was in general, giving a scathing opinion of my reaction to renting the movie, "The Secretary." Now, with the algorithms world we live in, had my device been on, at some later point, I would have seen ads for porn and S&M "accoutrements" showing up somewhere in my feed. In fact, it will probably happen now that I have posted this on this board. I'm trying to see that quality input gets to my brain, and I really dislike the burden of having to work so hard to filter out the garbage. This is all a bit backwards to me. You admit that the internet contains a wealth of information - you do realize that each and every time you search for anything online or do any sort of activity on the internet it's stored, don't you? (I'm assuming you do, based on you later mentioning that it'll probably show up somewhere due to your posting here.) So you realize the magnitude of the wealth of information on the internet and you obviously use it so you're okay with all of your information being out there/data being collected but you unplugged your Echo because you don't like the idea of it collecting your data the same way the internet does? I will say that I find it quite ironic that you're so worried about a device listening to conversations you're having - the same conversations that you just shared with a bunch of strangers on the internet, in detail. I'm trying to see that quality input gets to my brain, and I really dislike the burden of having to work so hard to filter out the garbage. You also realize this garbage you speak of is garbage you created, don't you? You're the one having these conversations, which is telling the device that these are topics you're interested in, so it suggests things based on that. If you weren't interested in this "garbage", you wouldn't be having in-depth conversations or such strong opinions about them, and then later sharing it all with strangers on the internet. You mention algorithms so you evidently know how the internet and advertising works. In translation, this should mean that you understand that it's collecting data that you're providing in order to provide a more customized experience for you. If you stop being interested in and having conversations about this so-called "garbage", then you won't have work so hard to filter it out. It's a pretty simple concept. But let's not beat around the bush here. This statement should actually read "I only want to see information that 100% agrees with my opinion and I dislike having to filter out anything that doesn't." I just can't get over the irony of someone who is so paranoid about a device listening to them and "spying on them" posting such negative and judgmental viewpoints to a bunch of strangers, who may also have opinions unlike a device. And these topics are so first worldesque and the tone of superiority just staggers me. For what it's worth, I think narrow-mindedness, lack of perspective, and a focused & cynical concern with what everyone else is doing with their lives when it has no interference with yours does a far better job of demonstrating the dumbing down of our culture than any of the things you mentioned. The internet contains so much great information, you ought to utilize it to get some perspective.

Lydia mentioned New Age. I forgot New Age! My daughter Jill bought me all of Enya's CDs, and I'm also particularly fond of Ashana.

Mcmann mentioned George Gershwin. How could I have forgotten the old standards?? I not only listen to them, but I love to sing them. I have a shelf full of sheet music from the 30s and 40s--and even the 20s.

I knew I left out 100 things....

Lydia, I never knew there was a link between country music and smoking. I think you ought to report this to whoever it is that researches these things. :-)

Boy am I behind the times. I don't have an iPod and the CD player in my car has never been used. I don't even know how to use the extensive stereo system in the house. LOL Music has never been important to me. I just find a country station in the car and listen to it. If I don't care for the song that's playing I just turn it down.

We (Brian and I) have Sydneys old iPod that we got her year before last for christmas...(they all had to have the touch this year).....Well for one thing she didn't take *her* music off of it...and we don't know how to run it! LOL
I have cd player in Tahoe and listen to it usually over the radio since it holds 6 discs..
Oh yeah...back to the ? at hand....I don't know I will have to sit and think about it LOL Stacy

Alternative: Psychedelic Furs

Classical: Mozart Requiem and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (don't know who's performing)

Opera: Turandot and Pagliacci (again, not sure who's performing)

Folk: Carole King (I *LOVE* Carole King!)

Movie soundtracks: Godspell, Phantom of the Opera, High School Musical 3 (with 7-year-old Chloe!)

Jazz: a John Coltrane compilation and Miles' "Kind of Blue" is about all I've listened to recently

Zydeco: Clifton Chenier (and also the soundtrack for "The Big Easy", which is a nice intro to zydeco and cajun music.)
