Does anyone know anyone who does this? When I was in Hilo, my friend was talking about her husband and son who travel all over the world and a lot of times they will stay with a Homestay family. They are traveling all over China right now this way. She told me to Google it, so I did. I've since bought a book and been reading through some websites.
It's a good way to meet people from all over and I'm seriously thinking of doing this in four years after Lauren graduates from high school. We're also hosting two international students this year and I'm going to see how that goes, and possible host high school students for the remainder of Lauren's high school years too.
Just curious if anyone has ever done this? The only problem is that I live 25 miles from the nearest major university and there is no public transportation in my little town. The majority of people staying here in the U.S. are university students so that will be a big issue, I think. I'd also like to host vacationers too, but that too, is a problem, who is going to want to come to this little town? The only thing they have is a winery and the Wild Turkey Distillery here.
So, I was thinking of selling my house after Lauren graduates and buying a house in Lexington, close to my work and to the University of Kentucky. I've thought about doing this for the past couple of years, but the kids have known their friends for years and I like the small town schools they have been in. That long drive into work is sometimes not too bad, listening to books on tape, but at night when I come home from a long, hard day, it's torture having to drive so far to get home.
Plus, after I retire, which will be in a little over 8 years I'd like to have a little income doing something I enjoy. So, do you know anyone who does this? What are your thoughts, I already understand the whole thing about letting strangers into your home, liability insurance, etc...I just want to know if you know someone and what their experience with it was. I'm really excited about it, can't say I've been so excited about anything in years.
