Frog says not to worry,,,if the power goes out he will do the cooking

To dadoes: I had the agitator in a CURRENT Maytag and bought it because it had a full option button and all the others only had so-called auto-sense meaning put the clothes in dry, it weighs them and allows only so much water for the load. Salesman said it would not fill higher than 12-13". But it had a deep tub and a deep fill option. Great! What happened: I selected full fill and it filled with only low water over the so-called wash plates. Could not change it. When wash was over, it then filled with deep water and rocked a long time while floating debris came to the surface. How is that helpful?? I don't want a super rinse, I want a deep wash and deep rinse because dilution removes dirt. Folks, look at the tub bottom. Agitator or not, if it has "wash plates" you will not get enough water to wash your clothes clean. Read and believe the reviews of people who "HATE" their HE washers. It is all coming to this and if someone finds the kind that has no wash plates it must be an older inventory model, or from a manufacturer that the government has not noticed yet. But they will--it's the law. They bullied Speed Queen and that's one of the biggest and oldest reliable manufacturers of wash equipment. Alice3671

At first glance, the lighting would suffice (assuming ~ 600 - 700 lumens per can and that the center fixture provides most of the light) for the dining area. The living room may need an additional table/ floor lamp or two. The kitchen may be a little under-lit if the cans are considered alone. $125 per can may be the going cost depending on where you are located, which is one reason for people to substitute other lighting forms when the number of cans grows. If the ceiling is not up yet, adding more cans is not a problem - just a matter of tacking more cans in place and more 14/2 romex. The price differential between 5" to 6" cans is negligible. 6" cans will be around for a long time and the CR6 will not fit inside 5". Lighting stores would love to sell you 4" or smaller recessed lights as the pricing increases as the size goes down.

I was raised on a farm that did not get electricity until 1947, therefore, we and our neighbors had to use alternate heat. We used coal or wood burners installed in the main living space. A wood burning cook stove was in the kitchen. On very cold days, both stoves were fired and on milder days, only the main stove was used. That kept one room very warm and the adjoining rooms above freezing. Someone above asked what about overnight. We did what was called "banking the fire". An hour before retiring, the stove would be loaded with fuel and the fuel allowed to become fully ignited and then the flue pipe damper was set to slow the draft up the chimney and the air inlets on the stove would be reduced to low air inlets. A properly "banked" stove will burn almost all night and by morning there will still be a healthy bed of coals. By morning, the house will have cooled; Its the job of the first person up to revive the fire. That's how it was done. Old houses with "modern" heating plants were in luck. Those old furnaces did not have forced air but depended on gravity and difference in density of heated air to curculate heated air throughout the house. No electricity was required, although some had automatice fire-box feeders that did need elecric power, however, most of these did have a manual feed feature. Those old furnaces were 'lovingly' referred to as "octopuses" describing the huge amount of ductwork in the basement. Gravity driven air ducts require large ducts possibly with 3 times the cross-section of forced-air installations, but those work without power. Were these efficent? Nah - a lot heat went up the chimney. Many of those old house designs did not have any water piping to the second floor. Water was restricted to a pitcher pump at the kitchen sink - no electricity needed. This pump could not raise water much more than 20 to 25 ft (by suction); It drew water from a rain filled cystern. On very cold nights, the pump was 'un-primed" allowing the water to drain back before going to bed. The only water was in the sink trap if you had one. The next morning, after the stoves were re-fired with room temperature rising, the pump could be primed to provide a fresh supply of water. In the winter, one should not leave the house for an extended time without first draining the pump and connecting pipe. How soon we forget about the life of yesteryear. It takes only one generation to move on to the modern house with plumbing on all floors, a house that is dependent on reliable electrric power, and to forget how to survive without power for a few days. Kitasel, I agree that all personal deductions should have been eliminated. Itemized deductions always favor some groups over other groups and that is why I find them to be discriminatory by nature. I too,am on the metro north line and we never had the devaluation of equity that most of the country had in 2008. Getting rid of property tax deductions is maybe just finally righting the over inflated property costs in the NYC, Boston and San Fran markets. It is more than supply and demand, these markets are bubbles and their burst will open up opportunities for less fortunate people to finally enjoy owning in these areas as well perhaps, or at least I can hope it does. Again I am fiscally hurt by the 10k cap aswell but compared to the other real issues with the bill this is nothing to complain about. The tax brackets going down by significant percentages in upper middle and upper classes is what I find horrendous about this bill. Not the fact that these same groups, of which I belong, now have to pay on their property wealth and property additions... Taxes for many of us are too low and if we want better futures for our kids it is time we admit it and stop looking for breaks. I dislike this bill because it lowered taxes over all not because it did away with a few luxury deductions like expensive houses and extensions.

Frog happens to be a very good cook..in fact,,,he is helping me make supper tonight....

A Polinisian stir fry with chicken breasts & sirloin steak cut is bite size strips, then added a pound of jumbo shrimp.

Brocholi, Califlower, Green red & yellow bell pepper cut in 1" squares, Two large onions cut in 1" squares, 1lb of bok choy, leaves cut off then the stems cross cut into 3/8" thick bite size slices, 1/2lb of fresh mushrooms cut into large bite size slices, Sliced water chestnuts, bamboo shoots and one large can of pineapple chunks (drained and hold liquid).

METHOD:

Begin by making the marinade-

1/2 cup of soy sauce
1/4cup of white vinegar
Pineapple juice
1/4cup of orange juice
2tbsp of brown sugar
1/2tsp of crushed red peppers

Mix the marinate thoroughly then put in a medium sized zip lock bag and add the chicken, steak & shrimp. Seal the bag and shake it a bit to thorougly cover all the meats. Now place the bag in the fridge and turn it over once every 30 minutes for 4 hours.

at 30 minutes before serving time start the rice. For perfect rice start with two cups of cold water and add 1 cup of white rice (that 2 to 1 ratio is critical so be sure to actually measure. if you need more rice you can double or triple, but be sure to keep the 2-1 ratio). Put the rice on a high burner and heat until it begins to boil. As soon as it begins to boil reduce heat to low simmer and cover the pan. Now set a timer for exactly 20 minutes and do not take the lid off the pan while its cooking. In twenty minutes take the pan off the heat and fluff the rice,,,you will have perfect rice every time.

Put you wok on high heat and add 3 to 4 tbsp of oil. Heat until the oil is just beginning to smoke and drop all the veggies in. Now stir fry the veggies until they are still crispy then remove and set aside.

Put 4 to 5 tbsp of SZECHUAN OIL (pronounced SA-Schwan) in the wok and when hot add the chicken, steak & shrimp, but reserve the marinade.

When the chicken, steak & shrimp are cooked (about 5minutes) return the veggies to the wok and pour the marinade in and stir fry it all about 3 minutes.

Now mix about 2TBSP of cornstarch in a 1/2cup of cold water and slowly pour into the wok and let that heat until the liquid begins a light boil. Now stir again while the marinade thickens and coats everything well. Pull off the heat and set aside.

Place a 1/2cup of rice on a plate and top with about 2 cups of the stir fry and enjoy.

That should yeild enough for four ppl, but here it is just Jan, Frog & I and we never seem to have any leftovers....LOL

I've never tried cooking rice from cold water. I always add it when the water boils. I'll try your method, Lazypup and Frog!

Sure sounds good! Even after supper. I have made rice like that and yes it does turn out good. I also have use a rice cooker.
