Adjusting the contrast on Nooks & Kindles?

I was playing around with some of the Nooks that Target has -- one was the Reader, one was a web-enabled model (can't recall what they call that one) and I think the other was a color (the Reader wasn't hooked up properly, so I couldn't really make much of it).

Looking at one of the books that was preloaded on the machines, I found the contrast a bit harsh on the eyes -- but it might also have been a result of the store lighting.

I played around with the settings to adjust the brightness, and it made reading a bit easier, but when it comes to the Nooks, are there any other adjustments?

And for those of you with Kindles, how much wiggle room is there to adjust the contrast on whichever model you have?

I have played around with a Kindle Fire at Best Buy, but did not look at the brightness settings on that at the time (I admit that I was sidetracked with a video on it!). I'll go back next week to do more hands-on research, but in the meantime, what's been your experience?
