how much fun..the last i was near there it was to see fashion island...we used to eat at a place called woody's wharf on balboa island..is it still there?

Susan, I work just a couple miles from Fashion Island.

Woody's Wharf is still around and in fact I may be going there next Sunday. A couple we met on our cruise to Alaska in May live on Balboa Island and have their own Duffy electric boat. They invited us to go sailing around the island to the backs of several restaurants for drinks and partying on Aug. 1st. Should be fun!

It'll be the "south-est" (LOL) I've ever been. I've never seen a palm tree before!

Casey - I hope you take some time to drive the coast - it is magnificanet and there are some great geo-caching spots. (Although I just wanted to recommend a couple that have been disabled :( I think I can send you the numbers and you can still stop there, if you are planning to drive PCH.

Oh that's right! You like to Geo-Cache. Our neighbors are big into GeoCaching (TeamRand, I think is their name) and we go with them from time to time.

I'll definitely be bringing the GPS and will look for some geocaches if they're not too far out of the way.

you're the second person going to so ca... my dd is headed to san diego in a week..she taking her dh and the kids to see where we used to live and some of the sights...if you had more time i's suggest a "quick" (ha! nothing is quick in ca, lol) run down there to do the zoo..but there's just so much time on a business trip...

Petaloid, when is school back in session? Casey won't be here until mid September. Or did you retire?

We might want to think about doing something in the evening instead so no one has to sneak out of work. We'll talk specifics as the time approaches closer.

Casey, just an FYI, Disneyland is about 15 miles from where you'll be staying. Six miles to Fashion Island, Newport Beach and 3.5 mile to my house. San Diego is about 100 south. Palm Springs 95 miles east. Los Angeles, 45 miles north.

Thanks for the mileage info Jodi, Newport Beach and Fashion Island are already on my list, will think about Disneyland. Would love to see LA but don't feel comfortable driving in LA traffic.

There is a train station in Irvine that will take you to Union station in LA without having to change trains. After that though, you're kind of on your own though there are some interesting sights within walking distance of Union Station.

Catalina Island is another local attraction. You get there by boat or small commuter plane. It's about 22 miles off the coast and you can leave from Newport Beach area. The main attraction there is the town of Avalon, the Wriggly (chewing gum) mansion (though I don't know if they still do tours), the landmark Casino building, and the easy going atmosphere of Catalina. It's fun.

I hiked the interior many years ago with my best friend. We got lost because a herd of buffalo blocked our way to the camp we were supposed to spend the night at. Because we never checked into the camp , a search party was formed and the whole island was on alert looking for us. They found us wandering around on a small dirt road at the top of a mountain a little after midnight. The whole campsite was up when the ranger drove us there and everyone cheered and fixed us dinner. Pretty embarrassing moment in my life. LOL

My brother is getting married in September so I have a lot of "duties", but I'd love a get together if the timing works out right

Karen- I have an annual pass to Disneyland so I can come after work and join you if you decide to go. I know a lot of the secrets and fun stuff to do!

There is a lot of cool stuff within walking distance of Union Station in LA (China town, little Tokyo, Alavera Street, etc) and a subway to get to some other fun stuff. I hate driving in LA too, but sometimes it is a necessary evil for the fun stuff.

I'll be there in with you all...in my dreams...8)
