I have been thinking a lot lately about how I 'lucked' out with the guy I married nearly 49 years ago. He knew when he married me that in time, he would have to do all the work, but he took me on anyway. The man is a genius. Here are pics of his ingenuity that have been a great help to me.

My toilet that he raised by 5 inches with a hand made wood block. Then he added a 5 inch foot stool that can be raised or lowered with the handle. I sit down on the seat then lower the foot stool by pushing the handle forward to put my feet on so that they rest firmly at the best height for 'doing what I went there for". Then I remove my feet to the side and raise the rest by pulling the handle back so it is out of the way for me to get up or anyone else to use the toilet.

The foot rest is completely out of the way for a man to do his duty.

This is my elevator that raises me up the 28 inches from the garage floor to the house level. He built a little porch inside the garage. The freezer is on the "porch" raised about 6 inches to make it easier for me to get at things in it. The steps up to the porch are located between the boxes you see (I am getting ready to can some tomatoes)and the freezer riser. Dh adapted a mecahnics hydrolic lift table to make the elevator. It has a limit switch that I must hold while the elevator is in motion. On the other side of the peg board are all my gardening supplies and parking space for my scooter.

Not only is he a sweetie, he's a genius!! Wonder how in the world he ever figured out how to build your "elevator".

He is a genuis, and a kind-hearted one too! Gazania, you've done something over the past 49 to deserve that TLC! He's quite an engineer.

Let us know when you get to the 50 year mark so we can all celebrate together here on KT.

Gardenbug: Thanks for sharing this. Your son is doing wonderful work and would probably enjoy a documentary called "Hole in the Wall" about an experiment in providing slum children in India with computers and access to the internet (he may know about it already). A description can be found on the site linked below, and the documentary itself is available in most libraries. Don't quite know how to express this or even if this is the right time and place: I am a lurker on gardenweb, and have enjoyed all the pictures you have posted over the years, of gardens and families. And on the other side of the pathway...Bridegroom, Fried Green Tomatoes, Blue Angel, Reptilian, Inniswood, Yellow Splash Rim, Tokudama Flavocircinalis and Aureomarginata, Jack of Diamonds, American Sweetheart.... This bed was started just last year. Bought the largest plants I could find! Still some work to do at the top of the hill, needs clearing out of poison ivy, wild honeysuckle, other vines, etc.

Sorry, nope, west is pointing straight at the camera, you're look straight east. North is left. Plus, we sit on a ridge, so it gets cold. Last year when it got really cold I had 5 heaters going (had plastic up to cut it down to 16' x 8') and still lost a few plants. I guess I'm going to splurge and buy a big propane heater like Tom has... I just hate spending that kind of money to heat a greenhouse. Thanks Kevin... NO WAY am I growing 5000, I've got my preliminary count at 3800 and I'm trying to get it under 3000... And nope, not a compost pile. we had a big maple behind the house, it had a diameter of around 4-5', but the last few years of drought took it's toll and it died, that's some of it's remains. I had the guys leave some of the chips for me to use as mulch... :-( I'd rather have the tree. Pam

Marlene...I like the 2 urns at your steps, too ... & those big tiered ornaments! Very festive! Your galvanized tub w/the sled is great on your porch corner! Your Christmas gnomes hiding among the pretty canister set is very cute! They are tricky lil critters ...be careful, they may find a permanent home somewhere ...& you won't be able to find them to pack away after Winter! Love the angel in the cloche ...those colors are so gorgeous tog ... I am ready to use that color in a bedroom, I think...so pretty! And that Nativity always calls to me...all white & the fact that you made it at one time in Ceramics! Awesome! Your home is very lovely ...& you're ready to take on another big project uh...sounds intriguing...old, new mantle ...(eww, I hate strippin' wallpaper!) TFS! Jeanne S.

Just absolutely gorgeous! you are a very lucky woman, and I feel the same EXACT way.

My hubby was a home builder. He was hit head on at 65 mph by a driver who crossed over the double yellow line. The driver died, as well as his wife and two year old little boy. I still get chills when I talk about it. This happened 4 years ago.

Hubby was in a wheelchair for two years - he came home and was in a hospital bed with IV drips, I gave him shots in the stomach every night, changed the dressing in huge holes in his leg and butt (the nurses in the hospital trained me how to do this -- god bless those nurses!)

the docs didn't expect him to live.

When he was able to walk again, with one foot fused completely and the other fused 75%, the docs told him to get out of construction.

This big, beautiful, Irish, Stubborn Man, built our home AFTER he was told "to get out of construction". ALL he needed to hear was that "he couldn't".

My goodness trisha, what a horrendous time. The physical and emotional trauma of such an accident, I can't imagine how the both of you got through it to move on.

The proclamation of "you can't do that" has always been a challange to my DH, through his diabetes and many heart procedures as well as his intellectual abilities.

I know many here at the KT have survived or are struggling with adversity themselves or with loved ones. Together we are a tough bunch always ready to cheer each other on when needed. Thank you all for your responses. My Dh is a gem and I know it. It is nice to be able to let others know it to.
