Same Kind of Different As Me

Wow! This is one book that I will definitely recommend to everyone. I bought it last night on ITunes and put it on my IPod. I took it with me to listen to during my chemo treatment. Once I got back home I started listening again and found myself crying my eyes out. What a moving story!

I think the audio version was wonderful with the two narrators. It was just them telling their stories. I'm not a re-reader of books, but I will listen to this story again.

Have any of you read the book? Or read anything good lately?

I am having some eye problems right now and unable to wear my contacts. I don't have any glasses and stores don't sell reading glasses that are strong enough for me. So that is why I am doing the audio books and so far I've listened to two and loved them both. I listened to Boom by Tom Brokow and enjoyed it thoroughly. The audio book is narrated by Brokow and that made it even more interesting to me. It's about the 60's when the baby boomer's (my generation) were coming of age. It brought back so many memories and also filled in some blank spots for me. It's a book that I think baby boomers and those older will really appreciate and those younger should read so they can have an account of what happened in those tumultuous years.

I think I would appreciate listening to it more than reading it....Sometimes my eyes just kind of skip through part of what I'm reading...But I think his voice would grab ahold of you and you would hear what he is saying...

But then I don't have anything like an Ipod...

Has the book been out long enough to be in paperback...and maybe with luck be out there in somebodys box of "read" books...so I might be able to get it on freecycle?

I am reading "A Vintage Murder" by Michelle Scott -- a fun little mystery series set mostly in Napa/Sonoma wine country. In this particular issue the characters are visiting Australian wine country. In the books, you learn a little bit about wine & food pairings along the way, along with a recipe or two. Next up is "The Ghost Orchid" by Carol Goodman -- I discovered her recently and absolutely loved "The Seduction of Water" and "The Drowning Tree".

Hey There: Yes, you can for sure use different window treatment styles for different rooms. First decide what function you want from the shade in every room - do you want black out in the bedrooms or is light filtering ok? How about the living room or you doors? Is there room for panel blinds? Do you have trim around the windows that you don't want to cover and that require an inside mount installation? I have to install 1200 square feet in a condo within the next month or so -- 3000 miles away from me. So there's nothing I can do with a local mill, and there's an HOA to deal with that has to approve whatever I choose. (The IIC is what matters; they won't care what it looks like. But ideally that means published specs that my property manager can wave at them. Realistically, I can probably get away with pretty much whatever wood choice I want, as long as I use an underlayment that will satisfy them.) The floor is concrete slab, and I am not up to laying a subfloor, so the install will have to float, meaning engineered. It's also coastal, so humidity/stability is a concern -- and I know that you specifically :) will tell me that I need to have humidity control on my HVAC, but it's a central system for the entire building, so there is absolutely nothing I can do there. :( Honestly, the cost is truly my least concern. I'll pay what I need to. It's my eye that I have to satisfy, and with EVERYTHING out there being wirebrushed these days -- a HARD NO for me -- trying to find something that's widely produced enough that I can see it here, but install it there, has been a trial. (That is why this thread is asking whether what I see "on the shelf" here is going to be the same as what I can order there. Or if I actually like something at Home Depot, would it be worth ordering the "equivalent" via a flooring specialist there. One of the ones I like the most visually is $3/SF at Lowes -- you'll forgive me for being terrified to install $3/SF anything that I have to live with! And my #1 favorite here isn't even sold on that side of the country.) The installation is also being done under the HOA's insurance (the common laundry drain stack flooded half a dozen units) so I don't really control the installer; that part costs what it costs. I'm just providing the material -- but that IS a reason to not go with anything truly $$$$ Feel free to tell me what a mess this whole thing is -- I already know! :p

@gio european: Thank you for the colored mock-up. It would indeed be "my treat" as you say. That is an interesting idea to bring the bathroom tile into the master closet. That wasn't something I had considered. @4arnottp That is beautiful! I do think the LVP floors have a more "natural" look as compared to wood, plus no grout. I'm meeting with the flooring people next week to get a better sense of my options and pricing and will definitely bring LVP back into the conversation.

Thank you for the recommendation.

I like audio books for the car commute to work (Harry Potter series, currently).

Good idea to listen during chemo, to take your mind off things. I had radiation therapy for cancer 20 years ago and that would have helped to distract me (I'm fine now -- you will be too!)

Pattico, do you have an MP3 player? I'm not sure, but I suspect that you might be able to put it on there - son records stuff from the internet (e.g. old mysteries on the radio: "The Shadow", "Inner Sanctum") all the time ... but don't know whether an audio book would be accessible to record for playing there.

Good thoughts going your way, Mary Ann, and prayers on your behalf, as well.

Patti, Same Kind of Different As Me is out in paperback. At amazon.com the book has 150 reader reviews with a 5 star rating.

Thanks wildchild and Peggy. Petaloid, I actually don't mind going for chemo treatments. All the staff at my Dr office are great. They are happy and full of laughter all the time. I have fun just visiting with them while sitting there. I also enjoy talking to other patients there who are mostly very upbeat. We all just love our doctor!

More on what OJ said - Patti, you might see if your library has the audio CD of the book. Here in Texas we can order what we want through our inter-library loan program.

I have ripped the files from an audio CD and either listened to the book at my leisure while sitting at the computer or downloaded them to a mp3 player that I used to have before my sister bought me an IPod.

Thank you for the recommendations MaryAnn. I'm glad you weren't listening to it and driving if it made you cry. That could be dangerous. yikes! McCloud read Brokow's The Next Generation (I think was the title). Really enjoyed it. I'll have to get this one.

I just got the Buenos Aires Broken Hearts Club that Flamey recommended. Looking forward to starting it.

Summer, Brokaw's other book is titled The Greatest Generation. I've heard it's very good and I ordered it on cd through our inter-library loan.

I'm bringing this to the top in hopes that more readers will post what they are reading.

I would also love to hear of some good audio books.

I went to the eye doc this morning and he gave me the go ahead to put in my left contact. I have to wait on my right eye for more healing. But I can see now!!! I think it's been a good experience for me to not see well enough to read this past week as it has caused me to try the audio books and I am hooked! I plan to listen as much as I read from now on.
