Had to look it up. It is a

Oleander Hawk-moth. I thought it was a leaf.

I believe that is B. hatacoa 'Silver' and has been crossed with rex varieties. Yours is very nicely grown!

CdeL, absolutely LOVE you! I do, I really do! :) Thank you soooooo much! Someone on the QVC cooking forum identified it as a "twirl whisk". I found them on Amazon but hadn't had time yet to do a good Google search for a silicone version (Amazon didn't have one). Everyone that has one and answered on the QVC forum agrees that they're the only way to go :) And here I was thinking I'd not find anyone else that had one (lol) Thanks ladies :) Monica

mclarke, I can't BELIEVE it! It WAS the shape of it that made me think Alice in Wonderland, but I had not seen that drawing, at least I don't remember it! Absolutely amazing of you to find that picture, and look at the shape of the back and the colors - I literally have chills and goosebumps. WOW!

My perennial gardens are full of different kinds of bees and butterflies all of the time. Praying mantids are NOT welcome, believe me! Once you begin to see little heaps of butterfly wings on the ground, you realize what the little marauders are after. :-) If I spot one in the vegetable garden, I'll grudgingly let it stay....but they can't hang out anywhere else. I'd be very careful about allowing children to handle these insects. They have powerful mandibles and can inflict a bite that may be scary to a child. AS they get older, it would probably be perfectly fine. There's probably not a more interesting creature to behold, in a kid's mind!

Wow I've never seen one just like that. That's neat! I took photos of a big moth when we first moved into our last home, over 20 years ago. It's antenna was like feathers. Had similar markings as this one, but was in brown, beige and rust. Just gorgeous. Pre-digital so I don't have a copy on my computer. This one you captured is quite amazing. Did you take any other photos at different angles? If so I'd love to see them.

That is truly one of the oddest things I've seen. It almost looks like a Darth Vadar helmet on that guy.

Beautiful moth, but not the Oleander Sphinx. Close, though! It's the Pandorus Sphinx. Look at the details on the wings...and yours is missing the big eye spots.

Sphinx moths (or hawk moths) are the adults of hornworms. Some of the prettiest caterpillars, for sure. Check out the brown phase of your Pandorus.
