Yes, I agree, please make sure the yarn is soft. I used to wear a winter fleece cap to bed in the summer time because my head would get cold at night. During the day, I was warm enough to go bald and only wore a wig if I went out somewhere special.

I don't know about yarns anymore, but wool yarn used to be
very very scratchy to me, and that is not a good attribute
for hats for baldies! lol

chenille would be nice! You are very sweet to do this!

Also check with your local cancer center. Ours has caps/hats you can look at and will offer suggestions.

I don't know anything about knitting or yarn, but I would like to say that ivamae, you sound like a wonderful person! Always kind comments, and volunteer work too. I should take a page from your book!

I have a lot of arthritis in my one hand and not sure how long I'm going to be able to do this, but it does give me such a good feeling and I do like to keep my hands busy while wathcing T.V. in the evenings.

We have a wonderful cancer unit in our city. My son had to have 34 radiation treatments awhile back and I would love to repay someone a wee bit for all their kindness to everyone. It is so very, very hard to see little children there, but everyone is wonderful

I started one lats night as an experiment with yarn I had and wasn't a bit impressed with its softness or anything else. Certainly the pattern wasn't much help, but from this one, I think I can make my own pattern and maybe use baby yarn or something similar, that would be soft and cosy.

The link below will take you to a page with free patterns for chemo hats. There are patterns for knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Also, there are photos of all of the hats, so you know what you'll be making.

There are several patterns that call for DK weight yarn, and a really great yarn to use is Dreambaby DK from Plymouth Yarn Company. It's 50% microfiber acrylic, 50% nylon. Machine wash and dry. It is soooo soft. I've made bunches and bunches of baby blankets with this yarn and I love it.

My friend gave me a cap and I almost always only wore that one. It was a black yarn with sparkles in it. I loved it and everywhere I went someone would ask me where I got it. My friend couldn't remember where she had bought it and I have looked everywhere for one like it. My SIL was sweet enough to send me a pattern and a loom, but I am just not crafty. If I could find the yarn, my sister could make some for our Cancer Center. We had women who brought knit caps and another group made quilts. I will always cherish my hat and my quilt because I know they were made with love. Just as yours will be. Thank you.

One of the gals on here made me a couple of hats(crocheted i think) they were from a pattern that is free here on the net and is called a "No hair hat day" or something to that affect.They were sooooooooooo soft and i wore them all the time.

I won't post her name,as i didn't ask for her permission,but she knows who she is and that i'll always be grateful to her.

i used scarfs most of the time, although i sure wore a hat for the winter! (with flaps to cover my poor ears)

now i have my "curls" and with the meds, am more likely to dump cold water on my head, lol...

I have anothe question.

I have complted 2 experimental ones, chrocheted. I'm not satisfied with the one, as it is plain worsted weight yarn and I feel it is not soft enough.

Should they be long enough to cover the head from just above the ears, or should they cover the ears? I'm going to try a knit one, although chrocheting is easier on my arthritic fingers. Also, I'm going to go to the cancer clinic the frist chance I get and talk to them.
