A memory of eating Sunday dinner at Grandma's

I was knitting this morning and just relaxing over an iced coffee and a picture of my Grandmother's sunny dining room popped into my head. When I was a tot and the dining room chairs were still too big for me, they would put the Chicago telephone book on the seat for a booster chair for me. That works great when Grandma lives in a Chicago suburb and the inches thick city directory is available, but if someone's grandma lived out in a rural area, there'd be no convenient fat phone book to boost the grandchildren. I guess the Sears catalog might have worked.

Yep, sometimes even TWO Sears catalogs were used! LOL

My dad was one of ten sons and many a Sunday was spent at my grandma and grandpa's house with all the uncles and aunts and cousins. Everybody brought food and I have many great memories of us all getting together. Of course, there was the time that all the kids climbed up on the woodshed and me, being the smallest, was afraid to climb down! The word went out and one of my uncles came and rescued me. Also, the time that the team of mules, Old Kate and Coalie were tromping along behind me in the barnyard. They would not have hurt a fly, but the faster I walked, the faster they followed me and I was terrified! LOL

No memories of eating at grandparents, but I do remember parents used to invite the preacher and his wife for Sunday dinner.

Mother always had fried chicken, mashed potatoes with a nest of english peas in the middle.

I always ended up with a leg. Guess that explains why I prefer dark meat when it comes to eating chicken.

Maybe! You never know. He can be very good about me calling someone to meet when we are on the road, but we only had 2 weeks, and the weather decided not to cooperate the last few days. M does like his cider, especially if it hasn't been pasturized. And I would have even eaten the rabbit, even though we have had them for pets and DD still does! The leaks? I would at least have tasted them. It's been a tiring 2 days. Mom fell last evening and broke her hip. The did surgery about 5pm today, and it went well. She didn't break the "ball" so they could put a rod and screws in. DB & I were at the hospital until after midnight, then there most of the day today. I did not go back up tonight. She wouldn't have even known I was there & I am just to tired. Didn't help that I had a fibromyalgia flare yesterday morning and Tues. night. Makes me even more tired. Now the weather front has moved thru I am feeling better. Hopefully Mom will heal well, and cooperate with the PT. She has some dementia, and is on the highest dosage of the patch for her memory. We have more good days at this dosage, but she was very confused and agitated last night and right before surgery. Doesn't remember falling. Her sister passed away last month, and she hasn't hardly gotten out of bed since. DB had to make her get up when she did. She has given up. Don't know what this will do. She, for some reason, decided to get up, without her cane or walker, to get a drink of water instead of asking someone else to get it, which is what she has done for quite some time.

Mary, you both deserve a junk food night!! Enjoy every single bite :-) Georgysmom, since I've read through this, my first thought was "Oops!". But looks like you saved the day with the marinara. Good thinking! Angelaid, wow, that's a lot of choices for dinner. What do you do with your huckleberries? Jasdip, you sure are enoying your cooler weather. Dinner sounds delicious. Sure would like even a sniff of that homemade bread. Pam, a nice long ride sounds like fun. I bet your mother enjoyed it. Nice dinner to go with a nice day. Glenda, I really don't like even riding in the car during one of the south's famous pop-up storms. Hope you didn't get caught in it. Glad your fish was good. Raven, the best dinners in this heat are the easy, but tasty ones. I love those rotisserie chickens. What a life-saver they can be!!

The roast recipe/method is copied and pasted below. I was so worried about the length of time at that heat (it was just a tiny little roast, maybe 4 or 5 lbs), but it came out so good! Hubby said a couple of times that it tasted exactly like how he remembers his mom's cooking and that he felt like he just sat back down at her dinner table (she's been gone 30 years). Very happy memories for him. He mentioned it again this morning. This is the only way I'll do pork shoulder roasts now: Default Re: Question about Pork Roasts You will LOVE this!!! It is sooooo awesome! Pork roast (shoulder or butt) oven set at 325 degrees flour( 1 cup) salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and a dash or two of cayenne in a bag. Toss in roast and coat on all sides. Place in pan and bake for 4 hours. DO NOT baste I guarantee you will think you went to heaven! I just throw the flour and spices in a bag and then the roast. I make sure to coat it well with the flour mix and then put it in a pan with a rack. Do not cover, do not baste, do not add any anything. Just let it cook. It is fabulous. It is an old hispanic recipe and I've had it forever. I wish I could give proper credit, but I can't. Try it, you'll love it! Just be sure to use a cheap cut of pork (shoulder or butt) I've never tried it with a tenderloin.

Linda, I will have to look up her recipe. I'm glad she helped! That is awesome. Susan, Pot Pies are indeed comfort food, and Marie Callander, well that's quick and good. Laura, one of my very favorite soups..I make a batch and eat on it for a week of lunches. Kamren will have one bowl...the others won't touch it. Well I have some mac n cheese in the oven, and fried rice in a skillet. And salad. The Bourbon, Brown Butter Vanilla Bean Shortbread is now in logs in the fridge too. One more cookie dough to make..and one more marshmallow..but other than baking off some CC cookies for lunch boxes..I'm done...for tonight.. Oh and I started laundry too..one more load of 3 to get in the wash. I think I will sleep well tonight..might not even make it through Survivor.

Grandma's table on the farm--the left over breakfast sat out all day and you put a cloth over it. No one got sick, thank goodness early on there was only an outhouse. The dining room had the pot belly stove with the kettle of water.

I did not like to eat at one of my grandma's because it was the custom to let all the adult men eat first. Everyone else waited until they finished and most of the best foods were finished also.

My other grandma was an excellant cook and prepared plenty. Everyone ate at once, even if some had to balance a plate on their knees.
