I am 6b because of my proximity to the Ohio River- there is a ribbon of 'warmth' along either side that extends for a couple of miles, and as the crow flies I am about a mile away. My bananas and Needle Palm and bamboos survive with protection (I use straw and burlap, even Christmas lights if necessary), so one would think I could keep a rose going. But I lived in Ft. Lauderdale in '85 and those temperatures scare me to death!! Loving all the suggestions. So far appearance wise I love the Blush Noisette most as it just looks so charmingly antique. I suppose if there is one variety that would be a lot more hardy than another I should choose the hardy one. But size is not really an issue as I don't particularly want huge plants and to be honest, if it died back each winter and came back all neat and compact it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I am thinking of putting three in my front yard, so don't necessarily want the extreme monsters I have in the back with my other roses. I have Iceberg climbers along a fence line and they can be difficult to "manage". I want to spare myself that in the front by first getting the shrub form, and second not ending up with something that knows no bounds.

Let's see what you have to work with when the root throws off suckers this spring. If they are small you'll need to wait until they build some girth and strength; otherwise it's just so easy to cut right through them. The first thing I learned to do was cleft grafting, and it's still a go-to for me. It works for a broad range of scion-rootstock size discrepancies. I mean you can have a scion matched with a rootstock the same size or many times larger. But if the sizes of the two are close do a whip or whip and tongue if you like. And I really like the way those meld. Sometimes I fall back on a chip. You can place a chip from a pencil-sized budstick on a stick the size of your thumb without much trouble, and you can do it whether the bark is slipping or not, and regardless of whether the wood is supple and splitting readily. Bark grafting is very, very doable, but I've had a few instances where the branch didn't seem to want to grow over the splice well, and the connection seems a little tenuous. But I have a link to a very good tutorial that will get you going on it. Konrad does a super tidy and precise graft that he has pictures of, too. I don't have the link at hand but he'll provide it, I'm sure, if you ask. Those are all spring grafts. In late summer/early fall you can do chipping and budding. These are designed to heal over in the current year and then emerge the following season. So I don't have an exact answer to your question. I do, however, have a caveat, and that is that I don't know as much about what I'm talking about as it sounds like. There are a number of others who frequent this site who do more, and better, grafting in a few hours time than I've done in my entire life. I'm closer to being a newbie than they are, though, so maybe my experience at learning all these things is worth sharing. Getting toward the end of GWTW and still enjoying the vivid portrayal of that time and place, but am very thankful that society's attitudes toward racial equality are different now than in the era portrayed. I recently listened to a very compelling nonfiction audiobook that shows positive moves in this area Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill. It portrays Arthur Shores, who worked very hard to finance his law school education and who was one of the first black lawyers in Birmingham. He was involved in the civil rights movement and successfully pursued the rights of blacks through the court system. He persisted despite his family's fear when their home was bombed twice and, during this time, there was a bombing of a predominantly black-attended church in which several young girls died.

The county clerk hadn't gotten around to change the decorations on the tree to valentines. She changes it for every holiday, but she had been out ill.

Some of you might remember my post about the situation I encountered with Olive Garden and how they responded? Anyway, that's where we held our reception. Both George's daughters, grand daughter, great-grand daughter, two of our oldest friends (who were also our witnesses) one other dear friend and our State Senator and State Representative attended.

We were planning on paying for the whole thing, but George's devious daughter's hi-jacked the waitress on the way on and told her NOT to give us the bill. Talk about surprised!

Yep, what to wear?! Hey, how about a brand new suit? My old one (older then we'd been together) had finally started to come apart.

Will get some more posted soon.

SecSteve...you've surprised the socks off of me. I read postings and I get an "idea" of how I think people look. Well, dear heart, from your posts that I've read I had you envisioned as an early 30s, geeky-type, and very cosmopolitan, just past the skateboarding phase. LOL!

At least I did get the "very handsome and dapper" part correct; I'll just have to adjust the age to "late 30s!"

Do post more photos, and again, congratulations!

The girls consider me their "Step Fairy Father" which always gets a laugh. George and I were both overwhelmed when we found out what they had done.

Caroline, you made my day! George considers me geeky as he doesn't half understand the computer stuff I do.

Can I just continue posting pictures on this thread or should I just do another one with more pics?
