do you not have cable tv in your area? I have cable and would never go back to dsl, I hated dsl. I loved my verizon fios and I have no problems with comcast cable.

With dsl if you are at the end of the line from the closest CO you will get bad service so if they say you are too far out you probably are and even if they tried getting it to you it likely would be bad.

One thing I did insist on when I had dsl was for them to come and install at the box a whole house filter rather than using the per phone filters, it makes a world of difference and it is free they just don't want to do it but if you tell them you want it they do it. I talked to one of the service guys that was over working on the dsl and told him I wanted it and he said sure all you have to do is tell thme that when they come to do the install. Well we should not have to be the ones to tell them they should just do it.

Some days it's not to bad, others it's terrible depending on the site I'm on.

I don't do a lot online but I would like to do it quicker.:)

No, there is no cable service here either and I doubt if I could even have satellite service because of all the trees in the summer.

What is your long distance phone carrier? Sometimes you can get it thru them. What kind of TV do you have? Dish/or other?
Hope something is worked out. 4-5 miles is not very far, but then, AT & T is not the same as we had years ago.

There's no DSL or cable out where we live, either, and satellite won't work because we can't shoot up over the tree line which is on a ridge behind our house. However, we can get faster internet using a cell phone modem! So that's what we did. Yes, it's a lot more money than dial-up, but we got rid of our land lines to help compensate for that.

It's not as fast as cable, but it's way better than dial-up! :) Good luck to you, I know how frustrating it is!

For DSL, don't you have to be within X number of feet from the main box? That doesn't work well at all if you live out in the boonies! We're about 10 miles from town and 6 miles from the nearest cable.

We do not have a long distance carrier, never seem to make long distance calls from the home phone. We just have regular antenna television, not the greatest either. Sometimes I don't get a good connection with my cell phone when I am downstairs.

I have satellite internet and it is SMOKING fast!

It is a new kind called EXEDE. It is from WildBlue and I have it through Dish Network. I could get a better deal by getting it from DISH.

It is $49 a month and there is a usage cap. You would not be able to stream TV/Movies with it (although it is plenty fast to do that, you are just capped on how much usage you get.)

I don't have a problem with our trees. We have a lot of trees, but it isn't solid.

EXEDE isn't available everywhere...but if you can get it, it is pretty nice....other than the usage cap.

Yep. DSL over a phone line is diatance limited. One mile of copper wire was the limit at one time. ATT tells me a bit more these days. What they don't tell is that speed is affected by distance. The farther away from the exchange equipment, the slower it gets.

The distance is more if you have fiber optic phone lines. A few companies are busy rewiring their service areas with fiber optic and will be selling TV over the same cable.

By your description, you are stuck with dial-up over a phone line. You'll have to get off the phone wire to improve your service. These day, updates sucks over dial-up: too much data. Web pages with considerable graphic content will be as slow as tar. The chances of error is increased.

I refer you to preceding comments by others about their experience with alternate services. You need to go with cable or sattelite. Sattelite reception is affected by weather. Moisture content (rain clouds) and snow clouds can interfere.

Dial up here also. Tell my kids when they visit that it teaches patience. lol I would like it faster but will have to just put up with it. They keep talking about getting faster internet in the boonies around here, like the state wants everyone to have it. Not holding my breath.

Took me forever to get it at one apartment, never got it at the first one... and then the screwed it up here, when I bought my house.

But, they are more reasonable than other outfits.

Yes, AT&T is who we pay our phone bill to. Yes, just down the hill is Verizon, maybe called something else by now. Anyway, daughter and son in law are half mile from me and they are with Verizon and they have had DSL internet for some years, they just upgraded this past week.

I have to tell you that I have comcast for my ISP for the PC... and it's too expensive.. and I'm really, really wanting to get a tablet to replace the PC, a nice 10 inch android running tablet... I asked somewhere else if it is possible to tether the tablet to a cheap 4g cell phone.

Between, the 65.00 for internet, 100+ for dish tv and 17 and change for my Vonage phone service which gives me 300 minutes per month.. but the minutes only count for call made out.. no charge for incoming. Plus, I have a pay as you go cell phone that lets me roll over leftover minutes.. 300 minutes for 60 days at 31 and change.. it is all getting ridiculously out of hand. Oh ya, my DH has his cell at the same cost.
Oh, did I say that there is never anything on TV!! I am so tired of this... we really need to find a cheaper way.

Are you on the cheapest price plan with cable? I know I have several options, I am on a very high speed level and it is costly but I could get much cheaper prices for less speed.

Also with comcast if you call and complain about price and threaten to go with someone else they quite often offer a year at the $19.99 price that new customers get.
I know a guy that does that frequently and he always gets the discount.

Several of my elderly neighbors that are on very fixed income called their satellite providers and asked if there was any type of discount for them and sure enough they have all now got a $30 a month discount. So don't hesitate to contact someone and ask!

I also use cable. I did one time sign up for ATT and it was great, not like reg dial up at all. But they kept raising and raising the prices. I think all companies do that. I called and asked for a cut in my rates, they were offering a year free for $15. and they wouldn't give it to me like they did my neighbor so I cancelled. Then they started sending me emails and letters offering me the $15 for a year. I stayed with cable. I had a rep come to my door he said ATT was setting up fiber optics, I don't know what that is like. I do know it is fast.

Sea, you need to stop in and talk to someone at your local cell phone provider. We're with Verizon, they have the best coverage out here in our area. We pay $59.99 a month for the data plan that uses a cell phone modem. It plugs into a USB port on the computer tower. It comes with a 5 GB limit every month, so I can't watch videos or movies but it's much faster than dial-up so I like it a lot.

Our other cell phones are with Verizon, too, so I just pay one bill every month for computer access and our phones. Our TV is with DISH.
