About the Garlic Seeds......??

Leslie....the Garlic seeds....And thank you very much by the way...

I can't remember what you said...do I put them in the ground now??? Or wait until spring?

I can imagine there would be a single bug in the whole garden after planting them...

Tip...never open a package of fresh garlic seeds that just came in the mail, while standing in the house...You get to smell it the rest of the day...LOLOL

I couldn't remember what it was that you were sending until I opened it. LOL...my minced garlic that I buy in a jar can't hold a candle to the fresh scent...no way...

Patti, just dig up the soil a little. Maybe an inch or two deep, and toss them in and cover them up. Did they get smashed? I was hoping they'd arrive whole.

yeah these are bulbils you have, and many people call them "seeds", but the garlic can produce seeds too. purple stripe type garlics, a hardneck, produces lots of them every year. i was reading about getting garlic seeds and it was saying in order to do that you have to remove all the bulbils while trying not to disturb the rest of the flower. but its only certain varieties that will make seed, like purple stripe garlic. and maybe it is incorrect but i thought it was two years to get a good clove from bulbils, not 4. idk, i have thrown a lot of those around and had them produce eventually, i couldnt say which ones were the new ones or keep track of how long. but it seemed like first year they stay really small and then the next they are bigger and grow fat bulbs as long as the soil is fluffy.

Uncle John, the problem with leaving them in the ground and letting the wrapper break down is twofold. First, if you leave the garlic in the ground it is likely to sprout. This is fine if you're looking for green garlic, not so good for seed stock. We are, as Martin has mentioned on another thread, betwixted and between. It is either too early or too late to plant garlic. Second, once the wrappers have disappeared there is great danger of the cloves (complete heads, in your case) rotting, being attacked by disease, etc. This is why it's recommended that you not peel cloves when planting them in the fall. All in all, I would be very leary of leaving the heads in the ground.

You can if you wish. Some do, some don't. The seeds don't bother many folks but some of us feel they add a bitterness we prefer to leave out. If you choose to then I just cut the tomatoes in halves, or quarters if they are really big. Then just use your thumb to pop out the seed gel pack in each half or quarter. You won't get every seed but it does get 95%% of them. If the tomatoes are over-ripe and won't hold their shape when cut then you can always just invert them over a bowl and gently squeeze. Most seeds will squeeze out. Hope this helps. Dave

I got mine (Thank you so much Leslie!!!) and like Patti, haven't a clue when to plant them or where. Sun? Shade? Lots of water? Little water?

Mine are on the south side of the house, so they'll do fine in sun. They don't get a lot of water. Only what mother nature gives them.
Plant them this month or next. Next spring/summer when they set on those little bulb heads on the tip of the stalk, cut those off, so the energy will go down into the garlic bulb, and not into those seeds. I'll be digging the big bulb next month.
