The reason I'm convinced it's an egg is that I accidentally squished one. It made a popping sound, and the liquid inside looked . . . egglike.

How big is it? Could you take it to a nursery? Looks like silk? Spider?

I would say it is a spider egg sac.

Turtles lay round eggs...usually in sand...

I'm still hoping it wasn't a spider, but a spider is the most likely critter to navigate to that spot, I would think. Unless it was a flying insect, I can't imagine what else would climb up onto the table and then visit a each of a bunch of small rectangular pots with recessed soil levels.

In person, the egg resembles a perfectly round, tiny opaque stone--like I said, about 1/8" in diameter. I'll watch this one and see what develops.

My cousin Dave candled two kinds of turtle eggs (snapping turtle and another) last week to determine the correct orientation to replace them after he'd inadvertently dislodged them from the mulch pile where the turtles had laid them. Apparently it's critical that they have a certain side up.

I live in Pennsylvania. Ain't got no anoles here--at least none that I've seen. :-)

The eggs are perfectly round, like a small bead of water, and soft-shelled.

It's not one of those added fertilizer beads, is it? You know what I mean? Some potting soils come with them in it already.

This would make sense, because those little pots were kept constantly wet. Snails love wet! So maybe I can stop feeling guilty now. Thank you!! Of course, when it hatches, I'll have to let it live. I may even consider giving it a stern warning about the oat bran and slug killer I have scattered about . . .

When I first viewed your picture, I thought, mushroom, but you went on to say that a broken one had the interior of an egg.

It looks like a fertilizer bead to me too. Or are they moisture beads? When you squeeze them, liquid does come out, and they pop.

My thought would be a fertilizer bead too. It's definitely not a turtle. ;)

I think it's either a fertilizer bead or moisture retention bead.

I'm trying to think... I popped a few of them at the beginning of the season. I don't think I looked very closely when I did it. I just popped them out of boredom.

That would be so funny if it's a moisture bead . . . and I would feel like such an idiot! LOL

Tomorrow I'll go paw through the bag of potting mix and see if it's full of "eggs." I'll report back.

Well, I checked my bags of potting mix, but neither of the open ones have the moisture retention feature. I did buy one or more with that feature, though, so it's possible that's what I used in those little pots.

Still, I'll continue to observe the "egg." This could turn into a blonde joke.....

The moisture retaining granules I use can break apart, kind of like jello, but don't pop as you described.

The fertilizer beads I have used are orange or green.

I still suspect you have a snail or slug egg.
