What would lay this egg on potting soil?

I had several little plants growing in seed-starting pots on a table outside. Something laid one or two eggs in each of them, and I'm wondering what it was. Before I realized they were eggs, I assumed they were part of the potting mix, and accidentally destroyed them. Therefore, I'm hoping I didn't kill off something beneficial (or cute).

Here's a picture of one of them. Close up, it looks a little dented. But otherwise they look perfect round, and about 1/8" in diameter. They are solitary, laid one at a time.

Thanks for your help!
