LOL, Yes, I remember my first one. It was a portable, in our first tiny kitchen.

Growing up there were 5 dishwashers, LOL, kids.

Later, after we moved, we had a built in. When it died, we didn't have one for a few years. Great time to talk with your kids, while dishwashing/drying as a group activity. :)

Now, I have one. But I often washed mine by hand.

Mike, I too used to ask for a dishwasher when I was a kid. Each time I did, my parents would say "We already have a dishwasher ... you!"

Didn't have my first DW until I was married in 1973.

I don't..because I've never had or even wanted a dishwasher! I know some people think a dishwasher is a necessity..I've just never been one of those people!lol

I do remember my first dishwasher and he still works for me!

I'm like country-bumpkin..never had one, never wanted one. Now, the above mentioned "dishwasher" may have a different opinion these days.

No automatic dishwasher growing up. None in our first apartment. None in our townhouse. Old one in our first house; I was amazed how badly it worked, but only after replacing it!

Now, I love my dishdrawers! Top one is just the right size for dishes for two, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I only use the bottom drawer once in a while to make sure it still works!

The first dishwasher I had was a portable one that sat on the counter next to the sink. I think it was all plastic. I love my dishwasher that I have now.

When I was 11 we moved from our house in the City of Buffalo to "The Suburbs." Our new house had a dishwasher! How I loved that thing! At our old house, my sister and I shared the dishwashing and dish drying chores. Come to think of it, she still owes me a few washes. I took her turns many times. She owes me!

I used my son until I purchased a portable one. You rolled it to the sink and attached the tubes to the facets. I guess I used him to much. The first thing he told his wife I will do anything in the house but wash dishes. They have been married 25 years and he still hasn't washed a dish although he does most of the cooking, cleaning and even irons. Love my dishwasher, I keep thinking it is going to die each time I use it, we have had it over 20 years.

Never had or ever wanted a dishwasher. There was one in the house we bought here. Used it twice, it flooded our kitchen and that was the last it was used, but it sure makes a great storage unit for all my boxes of ziplock bags, napkins, vitamins, etc.

I love my Kitchen Aid dishwasher. Couldn't imagine life without it. I saved up so I could replace the old Frigidaire dishwasher with the Kitchen Aid.

I had a dishwasher for 1 year of my life. The year I lived in my first apartment. When I moved to the next one I didn't realize it *didn't* have one until after I moved in. Oh well. I did buy a countertop unit that just used water pressure to spin the rack and you put dish soap in a little spot in the top. It worked.... well, OK for a lot of things as long as they weren't too dirty. But that got to be a hassle so we started just using paper plates for years. I finally got sick of it and started using real plates and utensils again. Was pretty good about washing them quickly, soaking and using nothing but Dawn or Joy for dish soap. Now I use some paper but not too much. I've thought about getting one but I don't really have the best kitchen design or it to fit so it would be a bit of a hassle. If I were to move I'd probably like one though. I really like the Fisher & Paykel (and Kitchenaid's) dishdrawers but they're awfully expensive.

The first apartment also had a garbage disposal. Couldn't believe that one little twist tie could take one of them out. But it does. Kind of makes you wonder what good they are. Can't handle celery or a twist tie... Can't see any reason for a disposal.

The first dishwasher I ever saw loaded from the top. Our next door neighbors had one. It had to be dragged across the room and attached to the sink faucet by a hose. The racks were stacked and you had to load it by levels. Seems like more trouble than washing dishes by hand in retrospect.

Another neighbor got a built in dishwasher several years later. It was a really big deal at the time. They also had a water softener. I used to like to take showers there when I would babysit overnight. LOL

When DH and I got married we bought a KitchenAid to replace the brand new Hotpoint that came with the house. I loved that dishwasher. When we moved four years later we took it with us and put the cheap GE that out of our new house to replace it. That dishwasher was the absolute best. It was made by Hobart back then. I could have clean perfectly dry dishes in an hour. It automatically heated the water. It had a plate warmer cycle for warming dinner plates. Eventually the racks wore out and started to rust. We replaced them. Then they wore out again and the rack replacement was costing as much as a new dishwasher.

We bought another KitchenAid (Whirlpool built) that lasted less 10 years. DH was having to repair it all the time and the dang racks rusted again.

I was in Sears one night and just decided to buy our current dishwasher because it was on sale and had nylon racks. It was a "returned" item in it's box. Returned in this case meant it never left the truck so I grabbed the deal. It's a great dishwasher as far as cleaning dishes. It's a huge PITA because the new energy standards make it take almost 2 hours to run a cycle. Even the sensor cycle which is supposed to be the shortest. Plus it doesn't dry well. The plastic walls make the drying even worse. So I try to do dishes when I am around to catch it just before the drying cycle to open the door, let the steam out and wipe down the upper part of the cabinet so it doesn't "sweat."

I really miss that old Hobart built DW. It would probably still be running to this day. It probably used less energy than the new ones who have to compensate by running forever.

My next DW will have a stainless steel interior to cut down on the moisture.

I've had a dishwasher my entire married life. I wouldn't be without one. I absolutely detest standing and sweating over a hot steamy sink of dirty dishes. I only buy things that are DW safe. Except for my cast iron pans.

I was married in 1953. I never had one until early 1970's. Then we moved and I had one of the portable GE's. It didn't last long. I did without until almost 2 years ago. Never want to be without one again!

cynic -- The dishdrawers are great, but they do take longer to wash and dry. They use a tiny amount of water and detergent though. We only need to do one wash -- and that's after dinner, so I don't care how long it takes.

I didn't want a disposal in our new house and don't miss it a bit. (Never liked having that unclean area near food.) I do have a pull-out next to the sink with containers for garbage and recycling items.

We removed the disposal. I compost what I can and never used it anyway.

I've had a dishwasher since shortly after geting married. I've always preferred to hand wash everything, dry and put away as soon as possible. I hate to unload a dishwasher.

My mother had our first one in 1964. A dishwasher is my favorite appliance. I have been without one a few times in my life, but not too often.

Growing up the kids in my family were the dishwashers and I am the dishwasher in my home. I wouldn't mind a dishwasher but I don't really have the room for one and wouldn't give up any of my precious cupboard space to have one.

I have one now that came with the house and I only use it for storage. I just don't like them

I wish I had one but alas I don't. No room in our small kitchen for one. DH never does the dishes. If I were to die, I shudder to see what he would do or what the kitchen would look like.
