not fun! dh did it several years ago (playing soccer with our kids in the backyard) just be caeful and and do what ever the doc says! know it's tempting to overdo with a hard cast...invest in some baggies and tape for your showers!

So sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to a friend of mine just recently, but she "just" had torn muscles and ligaments. I am so afraid that will happen to me...I am out until midnight every night, and almosts stepped in a hole last night. I am going to go fill it in today. It isn't a hole that any critter lives in....I think it is a fence post hole left from when my husband took out a fence.

I feel your pain, literally and figuratively ;o) I broke my left fibula about 15 years ago in the late spring and I was steaming mad because the warmer weather was upon us and I had waaaay too much to do, darn it! I convinced my doctor to let me wear an air cast, telling him I'd be a good girl (not). I did let it heal properly for about 4 weeks and then one day DH came home as I was putting in fence poles and a garden fence. Ooops. He threatened to have a real cast put on me if I didn't simmer down.

Feel better and take it easy.

Oh no- that's awful- and your right ankle too- that's even worse. Well I guess this is a great opportunity for you to catch up on some reading or those movies you've been meaning to rent. I don't think you're one to sit still so is this going to be difficult for you?

My girlfriend just did the same thing falling down one step on Saturday. She finally conceded and went to the doc today....both of her big toes are broken!! Yowch!
I told her, that I know orthopedic surgeons are wonderful people, but you do not what them on your speed dial.

Thanks for all the good wishes. And yes, McM--I'm NOT one to sit still. Way too much going on in my life right now. Never having had a broken bone, I'm a little skeptical, but DD assures me (how she knows this, I don't know--she was only 2 when she had a broken arm, and she is NOT a dr. LOL) that now, the cast they put on will be one I can walk in AND shower in. Hope she's right. Would make summer so much easier if she is.

Guess I'll get niece's afgan finished, and maybe get a few other bits of handwork out of the way while I'm less mobile.

Orthopedic drs must be good guys--for one to make me a 9PM appt. Most folks want to be heading home long before that.

Sure hope you heal fast and well! Your attitude about getting some handwork done is good--just hang on to it. I was on crutches for two weeks in August once, and I found out that you can get lots of folks to do lots of things for you if you look pitiful. Try it!

Gosh, this brings back memories ...

Summer of 1998, I had just paid for airplane tickets for a long anticipated one month trip to Japan with my then 12 year old son. He was so excited to go that he could hardly wait for the seven and a half weeks to pass.

As I was walking across a grassy area at my DD's school I did one of those things where your ankle kind of gives and would have thought nothing of it if it weren't for the loud crack that rang through my head. I even asked the kids standing near me if they heard it. They nodded their heads yes.

Didn't hurt much so I walked over to a teacher and started chatting. About five minutes later I went to go find my daughter and whoa! my ankle was hurtin'. I said to the teacher that I think I've just broken my ankle. She looked at me like I was nuts since I had only been nothing but standing there.

Nonetheless the principal was called, an office chair with wheels was brought out and I was rolled into the office. No nurse on duty so I had a friend take me to the hospital where indeed I was told I had a small fracture in my left ankle.

A week passes and the pain is intolerable so I called for a second opinion. I was passed around and for the most part ignored until two days later when a radiologist called to tell me I needed surgery because I had a severe break in my ankle.

Surgery was scheduled and my ankle was pinned and wired together. It was now six weeks to departure time to Japan. I was determined to go. Getting around on crutches was a little tough for me when my DH and DD left on their own planned vacation but I managed. A week after surgery, I told my son to go out and enjoy the summer day. I got up from the sofa to take a lunch plate to the kitchen. Just one step up from the living room, I can do it. So I swung my good foot up to clear the step and I hit one of the crutches dead on. Broke my right foot.

We left for Japan as planned, me with a cast, crutches and a cane. I took the cast off the second day I was there because Japan is not the kind of place to be trying to managed a heavy cast. Wrapped the ankle, wore high top boots and used my cane. The broken foot hurt but at least felt strong. It was slow going at first but I managed the whole month without incident. Didn't need the scheduled physical therapy when I returned home. A month of walking in Japan did the trick.

We made plans for my DS to go to Japan again the next year on his own. A week before he left, he broke his wrist. Trip had to be canceled. He went the following year without incident.

Good luck with the ankle Azzalea. You can do just about anything this summer if you put your mind to it.

Jodi that's wonderful that you were still able to go to Japan.

We were in the Orthopedic Surgeon's office one morning to have my son's cast removed. All of a sudden we heard a scream from one of the exam rooms and then a boy crying "NO, no, you're lying, that's not true." We were all listening trying to figure out what had happened. Then the Mother and her son came out and the Mother just looked at us and said....."Well my son just found out that he needs surgery in two days and will be wearing a full leg cast for 2 months. So when we go to Disney World next week he won't get to swim or go on very many rides."

We all wished her well but the poor lad was just sobbing on his way out the door.

Bummer is right! I've never had a broken bone, but can imagine how frustrating it would be.

Use the time to refresh and refuel.

I didn't expect that ending azzalea. I've only been on crutches once from a sprain and I didn't do too well with them so I ditched them.

Mcmann, I'm sure he appreciated going to the front of every line though.

Azzalea, if they put you in a fracture boot, the worst part will be not being able to drive. Depends on how bad you broke it. I spent 4 weeks in a boot 3-4 years ago. It only slowed me down a little, but it was my left foot, so it didn't slow me down as much as it might you. I could take it off at night and to shower, but had to have it on continuously otherwise. I wish you luck and a short time in a cast!

that is awful...i did the same thing a few years back, only im ashamed to say i was on this darned computer sitting with my legs under me which i still do, got up and down i went.. my feet were asleep lol. i didnt even feel it...and yep if you like purple, i too had pretty feet for the first time in my life.. hope you heal very quickly..and no i am absolutely no good on crutches either! i wear a boys size 3 boots i couldnt even get into hubbys size 9 boots..so i feel for you!

Okay, here's the update.

Got home around midnight from my 9PM dr's appt. They were SO backed up, but the dr. was very nice, and he didn't rush me through, even though it was after 11 when he finally came in to see me.

He said what happened is that instead of tearing a couple of tendons, they pulled away, bringing little bits of bone with them--which he claims is much better than actually damaging the tendons themselves.

I'm in a removable boot--YEAH!!!, so I can shower, and will be able to walk on it in a bit. Have to wear it about 4 weeks, but after 2, won't have to wear it at night.

He also highly recommended taking 3000mgs Vit. C a day. Swears it helps heal fractures in older patients--yep, that would be me. So I'll up my dose (and keep close to the bathroom for the next few days). If it helps, it will definitely be worth it.

Well, I'm off--going to turn this off, take some motrin and hit the sack--it's after 1 in the morning. Long day.
