I've tried everything....he just seems to ignore that back deck!

My DH is going to powerwash the house, patio and deck this week. First he said IF he had time, he'd do it... but I reminded him that HE was the one who invited his ENTIRE family over this weekend.. so he agreed he needed to get it done.

Hmmm...I've been wanting the carport done for over a year now. I was thinking earlier that today would be the perfect (hot) day to do it. Since I don't have a Honey here, or a Honey-du list, I do such things myself. Getting out the (electric) power washer on a hot day is something I enjoy. I usually end up doing the house, porch, carport, dog house, lawn furniture, gas tank...just about anything and everything outside that can benefit from it.

I think he got motivated because our water rates are going to increase. Last time he powerwashed the driveway and walks, the water bill almost tripled! Hopefully, he'll get it all done before they increase.

My favorite - start doing it yourself and do like the 'men' do - make a really big deal out of it....

then....

when they say, I was going to do that! Say - Okay! Throw your arms in the air, thank them and walk away and leave them to it!

Works on dishes, vacuuming, washing the toilet............

Our house need washing and DH would be glad to do it but we are still under water restrictions due to the drought and can't use the pressure washer. Also can't wash the cars except in a car wash.

We did ours a few years ago, the whole house, deck, verandah, driveway, etc. Woody got sciatica from standing on the ladder too long, so don't overdo it, OK? It took months before he felt better, and a doctor visit, too.

Also- never build a deck under a black walnut tree. Big mistake. Huge. Filthiest trees that ever lived. Deck stains black. And washing it only works for a month or two. Phooey!

Peg, I like your method. Maybe I'll try to get DH's brand, new powerwasher out of the shed this evening and look like I'm going to try to turn it on! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

He did try out this new powerwasher on our smaller deck...then he was going to stain it. That was 2 months ago. No stain on the clean small deck, and the large deck is still dirty. grrrrrrrr, now I'm getting angry!

Peg, That's exactly how I do it....Just this morning, I got out the big saw and boy did he come running...We have rose of sharon bushes that have dead branches and I was determined to get rid of them...Then I told him I wanted a very big branch taken off our big maple tree....Now he's out there trying to decide if he can do it...Where there's a will, there's always a way!

There's nothing that gets the test0sterone going more than setting up a 'man's tool' to do something. Out of fear we might break it (they say) or do it better (I say) they come running to take care of the job at hand.

Something about men - power anything - fire anything - that goes back to their instincts of 'must do'....

Oh, since I was not able to answer the doorbell, we are now getting our driveway cracks filled and sealed for $250.00. It's off 'our' to do list. Geez. I dunno - you can get all this stuff at home depot or the like and do it for less. DH nearly sh!t his pants because I'm moving furniture to vacuum and steam clean today - I didn't ask him to do anything except help me move 2 dressers that my brother is picking up to the basement...

I explained to DH, while putting the laundry in, I do things when the mood hits me - and the mood has hit me today to get on with a couple of chores. He knows me - if he doesn't get out of my way he'll be steam cleaned! Hahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa!

Mcpeg, your method doesn't work at this house. Besides I have far more tools and what a lot of people call " boy toys " than dh. I even have bigger and better tool boxes.

I'm the only one who works on the " honey do " list and thankfully have already power washed the back porch this year. I do need to get out there and sweep some of that dog hair that accumulated there though.

I was thinking about getting one of those retractable screen doors for the screened in back porch the other day, but saw that part of the frame goes across the bottom of the door too and water wont drain out as easily as it does with a regular door when I do wash it.

When I retired last December I had a honey do list that was pages and pages long. I have it down to under a half page now and it feels so good. I realize honey do lists never go away completely, but I love having only a few things on it.

Mscippy I too like doing things myself. If DH wants to help - great - if not, get the heck out of my way. Seriously.

DH works his butt off doing what he does and works a lot at home to keep up on the industry changes - computer network guru consultant - he has spent hours and hours at home studying and it's finally paying off in his salary...so when he's home honestly I'd prefer to see him wind down a bit. He is also building my upper kitchen cabinets - something I'm clueless about...

Things are never 50/50 in relationships - more like 40/60 on both sides depending upon the topic.

I don't sweat the small stuff - if I feel like doing it I do it. If I don't it sits. I tried working in the computer industry and started with the same courses at the same time...DH excelled and ate it up for breakfast while I studied and struggled. Not my cup of tea at all. I do enjoy scrubbing stuff clean because of the feel good factor afterwards and it's my 'free at home' work out.

It's still fun on occasion to throw my arms in the air and walk away. The look on his face far exceeds the value of any diamond in this world to me! I live for those comical moments! LOL to DH.

Dang I'm proud of you mscippy and all you've gotten done in the short time you've been retired.

Sheesh...I'm retired and think my list just keeps getting longer. I'm blaming that on having AADD though.

At our house, the power washer is MY tool. So I check the gas and oil, hook up the water, fire it up, and get 'er done myself!

We did ours a few weeks ago and I coldn't believe the difference. We have always paid someone in the past, because our house is a two story and we are both afraid of heights. We just had the house done last year so it really didn't need it, but we did the driveway, sidewalk, steps and front porch and I just couldn't believe how much better it looked. I am a little embarassed to admit it but we have power washed the back deck, stepping stones, wooden swing, and BBQ pit, but for some reason neither one of us had ever thought about washing all the concrete in front of the house, The house was built 14 years ago. It was pretty dirty.

I'm in the same boat at Lindy...can't use the pressure washer because of restrictons...HOWEVER...we can HIRE someone who has a pressure wash company...so I've decided to get myself some business cards made up...stick a big ole MAGNET sign on the side of our truck that says "VERN'S PRESSURE WASHING" and go to town...

NOT REALLY...but if they don't lift our restrictions soon...the idea might just be put in action!!

We can hire someone too but that just doesn't sit well with me. I already have the pressure washe and we will be using the same water. Doesn't make sense to me.

I feel EXACTLY like you do Linda and I'm not gonna pay someone for something my kids can do...We had part of our driveway replaced last summer and if I could just pressure wash the old, it would look much better...the sidewalk is black from mold and algae...the house is GREEN at the bottom...

Bigack...now if you'll just get them to paint on this waterproofing stuff (NOT THOMPSONS..but another brand)...that deck will stay looking nice for 3 or 4 years...We put it on after doing our deck and 2 years later it still looks like we just pressure washed it..I'm sorry I can't remember the name...it was rather expensive but well worth it...they have a 3, 4 or 5 year can...we bought the 4 year...it comes in a 5 gallon can and is like a water proofing sealer...but better...it drys in about 30 minutes so you can quickly be using your deck again!
