Still No Phone Service

I have been without phone service since last Thursday. The phone company says they will have it fixed by the Fourth of July! I don't know why it is taking so long, no storms or flooding here. I have been keeping busy. I am still cleaning black raspberries and freezing them. Yesterday Cheryl and I left early and took KC and Izzi to the groomers in Pendleton and had them clipped. I had Izzi get a lion cut. She looks so different but cute. She is cooler.

I am typing from Amber's house on her laptop. She and I went to a few rummage sales this morning and I got some free sewing patterns and several plastic totes with lids to store things in. We have plans for the Fourth of July to go to Amber and Mike's in the evening for a cook out. I have to plan what I am going to take. Hope everyone has a great holiday.

Marilyn that is awful! What if you have an emergency? Geez Are they going to give you credit for this? Demand it girl!

Unbelievable!

Not just for the computer, but being without any phone service is not good . Do you have neighbors or any one in the area who is having the same problem, or is it just your phone?

Have they given you any reason for the problem?

Hi, I'm looking forward to hearing about your getting settled in. We just bought 5 1/4 acres this January. Had some awful frustrating times, and some wonderful moments. I'm finding it hard to get from the creation phase to the maintence phase, (see the journal for this week, I really have gone overboard on some stuff.) Are you in Upstate New York? CR is relatively useless for this kind of thing. For example, at least in our area, Sprint just declared 7 pm to be "night" for lower nighttime rates. Cool -- if they have usable service where you need it and you plan to talk a lot after 7 pm. But you likely won't hear about that from CR for months because of the lead time it takes to put the magazine together. What I hear of the Web site is that it is not particularly quicker with the news, either. If you talk a lot, don't bother with prepaid -- most is sufficiently expensive that by the time you're talking hundreds of minutes, it's much more expensive to go prepaid than it is to get a contract with anyone. It's not possible to give simple "Get [carriername]!" advice. It's just too individual a choice for us to make it for you. Verizon has an excellent network, but you may just happen to be in a low spot for them -- and, anyway, going with Verizon will mean buying a couple of phones and (likely) signing up for contracts. If you've been with Cingular since it was AT&T, chances are you have old AT&T TDMA phones, not the newer Cingular GSM phones. Since Cingy is no longer building out their TDMA network, it may simply be a matter of getting newer GSM phones for better coverage (try online auction sites for phones that may be usable but not brand-new and expensive). T-Mo seems to offer some great deals, but -- well, they have to. They claim they just about doubled coverage in my Twin Cities area, yet coverage (according to their coverage map) in my St. Paul neighborhood still is marginal. Who cares how cheap it is if it doesn't work where you want it? And, for that matter, you can hit the Cingular Web site or call their customer service (I know...), preferably at a slower time of the day, and poke around asking about cheaper plans. New ones are being introduced all the time; there might be something out there that makes more sense for you now.

I guess it all depends on how much you call from home versus away from home or on the road. We use pre-paid cellular. The new phones were free after rebate and my wife and I each spend about $5-$7/month for the STI Mobile/Sprint service. We only make quick 1-2 minute calls for necessary reasons and it works fine anywhere in the country that Sprint covers. Voice mail and text messaging are turned off on both cellular phones. Other cellular providers are now joining the pre-paid game with good deals. We are still stuck with the old telephone company for home and home office lines. I must have the reliability and quality of a landline for my business. I do pay too much for long distance, toll-free, and local service for my business compared to the low rates available today. Bills are typically $35-$50/month for relatively low volume usage. The last time I switched was from MCI to Ameritech(i.e. SBC/AT&T/who knows?) It was a pain to switch, but the new lower rates were good for a year before they went up again. Our home phone line just went up to $22/month for local phone service. It started at $18 several years ago. Pre-paid long distance service is $.025/minute using cards from companies like Cheap Phonecards. The latest cards don't require you to enter the pin every time from home and you can program the 800 access number into speed dial. The long distance cards are great from hotels too. We are seriously considering the switch to broadband phone service, but our local numbers are not yet portable for Vonage or the others. We are just outside of their large markets. Broadband cable internet is $30/month and speed is around 300K or 10 times faster than dial-up. It is fast enough for our needs. When I had my natural gas furnace replaced last winter the installers had some new type of plastic pipe for natural gas with them. They didn't use it since I have regular copper pipes for gas. They said newer builds are using the special plastic for gas since it's cheaper and thieves don't steal it. Hopefully that doesn't cause problems in the future for people. Remember the houses back in the 70's or so that used aluminum electrical wiring(it was cheaper than copper back then), that stuff caused fires. I know someone whose house burned to the ground because of that.

We just switched to a cell phone because our landline service was so unreliable. We had no service for a week during Christmas, and needed to call my husband's aged mother. My husband finally figured out the problem, fixed it, and we were able to contact her. However, we were charged $30 for a service call! No service person showed up, and we received a call on Christmas morning from AT&T to tell us that the problem was fixed. Well, DUH, we knew that because we had fixed it! Then two weekends ago the service went out--no storms, no lines or poles down, nothing except we couldn't call or receive calls. On Monday service was restored. My husband told me on Saturday to not worry, AT&T just doesn't want to be bothered on a weekend to fix the problem. He was right. We now have a $20 a month cell phone (the phone was free) and other than the inconvenience of telling all our contacts that we have a new number, we are quite happy without a landline.

marlingardener, you could have just ported your number to the cell phone and avoided the hassle of a new number. It might not be too late if you wanted to do that. However, if you received a lot of junk calls you might not want it on the cell.

Phone service goes down on occasion, it's one of those things. I wouldn't get worked up over it. Were I in your situation I would like to know what's going on. I've had good results by calling them. They told me what the issue was - there was a car accident that knocked out the station, estimated when it'd be repaired and it was repaired nearly to the minute of the estimate, early IIRC. I do like having the cell as a backup.
