Music is good, but I usually opt for the beeping alarm because my alarm starts off very softly and gets louder. I hear the first soft beep and shut it off. Otherwise, I hate alarms because they are so, well.....alarming!

Homepro1, Salti and Dadoes, thanks for helping diagnose my problem! I wasn't even intending on investigating. I had asked the LG repair center about the drain hose a while back and they said it couldn't be the problem, that it's not made of rubber or something. The details are coming back now! I just assumed it was the rubber gasket and my own repair guy said that replacing it won't solve my problem that the machines are just designed that way. So I chalked it up to just eventually needing to replace it with a top load. But the video on the Washer Fan website and stmt by dadoes leads me to believe it isn't unique to front loads. So every three years, I'll just check on the drain hose and perhaps invest in a washer fan. Don't want to mess around with mold! And thank you I will make sure the drain pipe is vented. I wonder if that is why I didn't have a problem until moving into this house. Or it could just be that the mold is getting progressively worse as years go on ( now 5 years old). To clarify, this machine was moved from Chicago, to our rental home in CA to our permanent home in CA. I should've just left it in Chicago! Lol and sorry to OP for hijacking the thread. But hopefully you learned something from this :)

And from the New York Times today: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/08/04/science/sponges-bacteria-microwaving-cleaning.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&referer=http%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com%2F "Stop. Drop the sponge and step away from the microwave. That squishy cleaning apparatus is a microscopic universe, teeming with countless bacteria. Some people may think that microwaving a sponge kills its tiny residents, but they are only partly right. It may nuke the weak ones, but the strongest, smelliest and potentially pathogenic bacteria will survive. Then, they will reproduce and occupy the vacant real estate of the dead. And your sponge will just be stinkier and nastier and you may come to regret having not just tossed it, suggests a study published last month in Scientific Reports. Bacteria are everywhere, so it’s no surprise that a kitchen sponge would be full of them. But previous research had underestimated a sponge’s quantity and range of bacteria. By looking at the DNA and RNA in samples from 14 used sponges that may be as dirty as the one sitting in your sink right now, Markus Egert, a microbiologist at the University of Furtwangen in Germany, and his team identified 362 different species of bacteria living within them. And the scientists were surprised to find how densely microbes occupied such close quarters: About 82 billion bacteria were living in just a cubic inch of space. “That’s the same density of bacteria you can find in human stool samples,” Dr. Egert said. “There are probably no other places on earth with such high bacterial densities.” The sponge attracts bacteria — which arrive via food, the skin or other surfaces — with the perfect living conditions. There is lots of warm, wet and nutrient-rich space for them to thrive. And among those taking advantage of these amenities, the scientists found, was a microbe called Moraxella osloensis. It is widespread in nature and lives on the human skin. It can cause infections in people with weak immune systems, although the risk posed by the bacteria found in sponges is hard to assess. Moraxella osloensis is primarily responsible for the stench of dirty laundry, and it may also be the reason that your sponge eventually emits a funky odor. The odor is a compound produced by the bacterium’s metabolism. It eats fat. It excretes fat. And that fatty excrement stinks. The thrifty among us may try to clean a sponge that starts to stink, but it’s probably time to let it go. Disinfecting it, as many have tried, does not necessarily work. You can microwave a sponge, throw it in the laundry or dishwasher, douse it in vinegar or other cleansing solutions or even cook it in a pot. But the researchers discovered more of the potentially pathogenic bacteria, like Moraxella osloensis, on the sponges collected from people who said they routinely disinfected them. “When people at home try to clean their sponges, they make it worse,” Dr. Egert said — similar to how people can encourage antibiotic resistant bacteria if they don’t follow the doctor’s orders. He says if you can’t clean it perfectly, it may be best to replace it with a new one every week or so — especially “if it starts to move.” But if you would rather not create that much waste, run it through a laundry machine at the hottest setting using a powder detergent and bleach and then use it somewhere other than the kitchen that is less hygiene-sensitive, like the bathroom. “Now I’m an expert in how to clean sponges,” said Dr. Egert, who wants to compare disinfection methods in a follow-up study. “I’m waiting for the sponge industry to call me.”

Most of all I appreciate that so many of you cared enough to give your opinions; you are all wonderful. I told my husband that most things would be changed back again, and he didn't bat an eyelash He is a keeper! The rug will go back under the rectangular coffee table, but am not sure whether to put the stool back and remove the Chinese pillow boy. I'm keeping the paintings as they are because the landscape looks great over the couch in the office, and I think less is more in this area because I have practically a whole wall of paintings alone one side, which you can't see in the pictures but the eye takes them in when you're in the room, and for now I prefer the more minimal approach. I rather like the small painting over the secretary because I think it's different, and the ornate frame gives it presence. The room is already overwhelmed with large paintings. Changing the paintings is very satisfying for me (although most of you don't agree), and we always say we have to please ourselves. Current Resident, when we adopted our Jason I thought he would clash with everything, not having had a red cat since my childhood, but how wrong I was. He looks great in every room!

If I HAVE to get up for an appt, or school, then a beep, because I can't stand the beep and have to get up to turn it off. Otherwise music, since I'll sleep through it for a while.

I used to use my TV as an alarm....so I would have to say "the voice of our local newscaster".

Now, my alarm is the sound of the coffee grinder - it's programmed for 6:30, and sounds like a jet taking off.

I wish I had an alarm that started off soft and got louder. Mine is quiet alarming and it is a beep. The radio for me is much more alarming. I used to have a clock that talked. It would say, "good morning, the time is 7:15 am." If you hit the snooze it would tell you it was your second call. On the third one, he was a little mean..."this is your third and FINAL call". I didn't like him so much.

I haven't used an alarm for years, but when we do need one, we have a little travel alarm clock that has a very annoying clang. I am not sure how to even set the alarm on the bedroom clock we have.

I could set mine for music, but it is an old alarm and the radio stations sound about as bad as the beep. So... we are beeped awake. It is not a pleasant beep either.

Time to start looking for a new dual alarm clock.

My alarm is my DD. I rarely need to have an alarm, because I don't do mornings.*

I never make any morning appointments, but if by necessity I have to be up early, I have my DD call me. Works for me!

*Magnet on my fridge says "The only bad thing about morning is that it comes so early!

Just the loud buzz mine makes works great for me. Makes me get up, and turn it off. :)

Mine sits across the room, to keep me from turning it off without getting up. ;)

Well, I prefer the soft music, but I would never get up as it would lull me back to sleep so the annoying loud buzzing sound will startle me awake and get me going.

Mine has a pleasant chime tome, but sometimes I sleep thru it. I guess I need something louder and meaner.

Since retiring in January I make appointments later. Preferably after lunch. Having to get up early after so many years of working irks me no end. But, prior to that, I didn't use an alarm. I finally unplugged the clock and put it in a drawer because I got tired of having to reset the time and the alarm every time the electricity went off. I have never had a problem waking up whenever I needed to be up. Early on, I just told myself "I have to be up at so & so time and it always worked. Talk about being brainwashed.

I would want a buzzer if I had to get up and go to work. I set my alarm on my clock radio/CD for 8 AM to keep from sleeping later and later.

I don't use an alarm clock, but I imagine the ones I have are a buzzer type. Either aches and pains get me up or Izzi, :)

'Waking' isn't my problem. Getting to sleep and staying asleep are. If I'm not having trouble sleeping I wake at the same time every morning, give or take five minutes.

If used an alarm, I'd like one that gradually lights up the room, like the sun coming up.

Now, when I *try* to go to sleep, I play a DVD of Hawaiian music that I bought 10 years ago.
