I don't use sponges, never have. I use cloths that I wash in the washer.

I do mine for 1 minute making sure it has plenty of water in it. I cannot imagine 2 minutes, but maybe you use bigger sponges, Susan. You have to be sure no one touches it after it's "done."

Also if I have leftover hot water from something which I'm pouring out, I always make sure to pour it on the sponge.

I thought that suggestion would get some of you folks steaming.

I also use cloth dish cloths ... but have a sponge with a scrubber on one side that I use to scrape off coffee stains on mugs (caused by muiltiple usings), residue on pots, etc.

It gets sloshed in hot dishwater, but treated in neither washer or microwave ... so far. But it looks as though some change in treatment is called for.

Nope, my sponges are pretty small. I tried 30 seconds at first, and that seemed to help. But then I read the article and went to 2 minutes. No problem with that.

I no longer use cellulose spomges. i use those nylon net scrubbies AKA ChoreGirls or ChoreBoys. I generally squeeze mine and set it near the sink to dry. I run it thru the dishwasher. I'll try the nuke method.

I never saw a reason to even USE a kitchen sponge, yet alone microwave one!

I don't use sponges either. But I do nuke my wooden spoons after using, to make sure anything I don't want in the wood is killed.

And while we're on cleaning issues--do you take your 2-piece rubber spatulas apart before cleaning? You'd be surprised what gets up in that slot between the handle and the scraper part.

I'm sure you make an excellent point, but I'd be afraid the spatula would be useless once I took it apart. How do you put them back together again?

Yes I do. But I also rotate sponges and clothes. They start out as dish sponges/cloths, move on to being wipe off counter or table sponges/cloths then move on to bathroom duty and finally hit the floor. Then I toss them out.

Yep, I do. I also throw them in the washing machine with Oxyclean. I never thought about putting them in the dishwasher - what if they came loose and got stuck against the heating element?

Alisande--I've been doing it for years, the top (blade part) just slips off the handle, I put both pieces in the DW (with the opening facing down, of course) and then slip the top part back on the handle. Have never had a problem with them doing that.
