I was never crazy about the kitchen flooring I picked out when my kitchen was new in 2003, so when the removal of a pipe left a 4" hole in the floor, I thought, Oh, too bad--now we'll have to replace the floor. :-)

Because I loved the flooring in my laundry alcove on the other side of the kitchen/dining space, I ordered it for the kitchen as well. The purist in me would have cringed at the thought of putting vinyl "wood" in my antique farmhouse, but the purist in me got old and weary a long time ago.

The light in the kitchen is nothing like the dark laundry alcove, so the new floor looks different, too. I still think it looks nice, but hope I'm not sort of sticking my head in the sand. In any case, it's a done deal.......

it looks great in the pic, I wouldn't have known it wasn't "real wood" if you hadn't told me.

I think these 'vinyl' floors are great looking. The first one I ever saw was in an art gallery downtown in Colonial Williamsburg. I was raving about how great the old wood floor was when the owner of the gallery told me it wasn't old at all, and it wasn't even wood.

The rounded rectangle dark green leaves suggest that it's an Orinoco. Definately not any dwarf variety due to the long stems for each leaf.

They have to be dead for them to send them in and receive their money. Yes, they are paid $5 per tag, which for the poor locals, is a lot of money. As far as I know, they don't kill them, they collect the dead ones that litter the forest floor. The Monarchs are not flying around much in the forest. They only come down from the trees for a rare drink of water and then back up they go. I doubt if there is much "killing" going on. You can, however, check out Journey North, which posts the migration, both north and south. The migration is underway and latest reports reflect Monarchs are at the Red River, which borders northern Texas and southern Oklahoma. I live in central Oklahoma, so I can barely wait! Tagging is done gently and easily, and usually right when the butterfly ecloses. They rest until their wings are dry and they warm up enough to fly. This takes anywhere from 1 to several hours. The tiny little "dot" sticker tag is just gently applied to the outside of the upper wing. Even children are doing it at Monarch Waystations elementary schools. I plan to do it this summer myself. It's important information that Monarch Watch is gathering in regard to these migrating butterflies. It is a personal decision, but I don't mind helping out the hispanic population IN Mexico. I"ve always tried to do a few simple repairs over the years, my XH wasn't real handy. My dad was amazing and he taught me a lot, but I've never done anything like that before. I also found out I can rent one of those big power snakes from HD. It might be a good idea to give the waste pipe a good cleaning. I probably should have done it when I remodeled the kitchen - I have 30 years of accumlated gunk, heaven only knows what the previous owners put down the drain! LOL That's Rainforest Cafe's Sparkling Volcano - it comes with a sparkler on top. My daughter and my neigbor's younger daughter share the same birthday - so I try and take them both out for lunch (along with her little sister and my SIL and anyone else who thinks they have to come along). It's funny how birthdays have worked out, the older daughter has the same birthday as my niece and my grandson has the same birthday as another neice. I have no excuse for forgetting birthdays.

parma42: Thanks, I just wasn't sure and needed some re-assurance about the wainscoting. I too liked that small blue sample to the right of the other two. I wish I knew what color that was and why we nixed it. That was 15 samples ago (no kidding) and back when I thought, "this will be fun". I'll find it and put a larger sample on the wall and post for your opinion. Do you think it's too much blue with blue on top and white below chair rail for DS's room? I can't change his bedding since it's only 8 months old. Any chocolate color suggestions? allison704: That makes 2 votes for the small blue to the right of the other two. I'm definitely digging through my samples tomorrow. You're so right, about letting them be individual. DS since turning 13 speaks in grunts and really could care less about what color is on his wall, just so long as it's not airplanes and fish. He really only picked the lighter blue for his bathroom because I promised him he could sleep in for another hour if he made a decision. I'm nixing chair rail in DD(16)'s room based on opinions received tonight. Huge sigh of relief!! I tend to be more traditional and I too like white below the chair rail for DS's room. Did you not like either of the blues? No hurt feelings, any blue in mind? brutuses: You my dear new GW friend are the reason I'm keeping the pretty pink faux in DD(10)'s room. Your comment on a previous post made me take a really good look at her room. Her room makes her so happy and I always smile when I'm in there either waking her up for school or tucking her in. I only plan on painting over the faux from chair rail down. There are too many dings and scratches and it give the room a kind of grungy feel. Another nail on the head is the blue/gray for DD(16)'s room. What type of computer screen do you have? You saw the gray in the blues clashing with the brown?! Thanks, guys! Yes, the calico is Annie (Little Orphan Annie), who is almost always in a bad mood--or so it seems to us ("us" includes Pogo, her son, who is almost always as nice as can be). :-)

I have the same vinyl in the kitchen, and I have had people argue it isn't vinyl. It looks great! BTW I have the same stove too : )

I think it looks great. My DD got the vinyl planks in "bamboo". It's beautiful and looks like the real thing.

I liked the planks, too, but this is sheet vinyl, made by Armstrong. It's the Rhythms line, and the color is Olde Hickory. Chisue, it's from Chicago! I bought it from my local Home Depot, but it took a while to arrive because they had to order it from Chicago.

Patti, my chopping block is the real thing, an oldie when we bought it 35 years ago. Somebody mentioned at a party that a relative of hers was selling his shop (an old German deli, I think), and the next day I persuaded my DH to drive to NJ to buy it. I forget what we paid, but it was peanuts!

It's solid maple. The contractor had fun moving it this week to install the new floor.

Your floor looks great and will be so easy to keep clean in the kitchen.
I have been looking at something some what similar from lumber liquidators, theirs is by individual "board" installed, it is stick down and they said it is super easy to install. I really would like to put it in my dining and living room that I rarely ever use, save the money for the good stuff for my kitchen and den that we live in.
this is the link to it, I love the Mahogany ones, I saw it in one of my doctors office waiting room and had to feel it to know it was not real wood, it has raised grain to it.
