I had to get a new one too. The computer guys had told me my laptop was on its last legs and to let it go until it died. I was getting strange messages, something about checkdisk something or so, and the keyboard was dying, and I think the motherboard was about dead too, when I would plug in my mp3 player it would not charge or let me upload items. This weekend everything kind of came to a head, so in between tornado storms I headed out to check out computers. I ended up with an HP too! But I just got a cheapest laptop one. I just needed something to let me surf at home.

Shaddy, if you can get a faster computer and have the tech put XP on it, I think you'd be very happy. Since I don't have or intend to go to Vista anytime soon, I can't say anything about that. I find XP to be so much more stable than Windows 98 was, and all my old programs that I used with 98 work on XP. If your computer activities are just those things you mention, then XP is fine. I doubt it would cost you any more to have XP than to have 98, and since MS no longer supports 98 with security updates, I would NEVER buy a new machine with 98 on it. As far as the monitor, I have no idea what the problem is, but you would definitely enjoy a nice large LCD monitor, and it would be light weight and not take up all that space that a CRT does (I'm assuming a monitor circa 1999 is a CRT).

Configuring Power Settings or Managing Power Options on that page in the above mentioned area you do not see the same thing they show in the picture? If you do not show any of those then you need to go to kellys corner and do a reg edit, very easy to do and the directions are right up at the top of page. You need to go to this link I give then scroll down to #204 look on the RIGHT side column there you will see Restore Power Schemes/Configurations, that is the one you want to click. Follow the directions given for how to import it into your registry. "To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit" when the page opens after you click on that item copy the entire page from top to bottom to save. Hello, I have a 27" Philips that is hard to start. Symptoms started about 2 weeks ago. Turn it on, the picture would come up, taking up about 2/3 of the screen, have a wavy look vertically, then the screen would go black. Sound would come on for a second, then turn off. Turn it off, then back on, and all was well. Same thing now, only having to turn it on and off multiple times. Once it gets a picture, it is clear as a bell for as long as the TV is on. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks !! DC
