Proposed new rule for KT forum

We have been blessed with the introduction of two new members today, and this happens a couple times a week...

I propose we make it a rule that a person may only be a "Newbe" to the room on their first visit...After that they are to be regarded as one of our friends returning.

Since I've always found "newbie" to be an offensive/derogatory phrase I'll ask it this way: why aren't new people friends from the start?

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

Oh my.... Well, I'm glad to know what impact Kristi, Donna and I have on others. (YOU GUYS + BLANCA MUST SHOW ME HOW TO USE THOSE DARN SMILEYS :) ) Anywho, a person just posted a thread saying they were upset because no one answered their question buried in another posting with a different topic. This is the reason I made this thread is for that very reason, people don't get the answers they seek and are upset. It's important that we can help the best way possible and there is NEVER just one answer, everyone's advice is just as important as the person above or below too. If anything, someone scrutinizing others for posting their advice or ideas is a problem, not advising people to get the most from their questions.

Hi Su VA, Well, you know how it goes ... the older you get ... the more the memories of the ``good old days`` come back! I`ve been here about ten years, maybe some more ... started during the Spike regime, and got sent to `Disney` a few times ... at first, wondered what the heck was going on, as we didn`t get any ``gentle reminders`` then! Was here during the ``pay-days`` (not the store kind), and reimbursing someone because I didn`t have PayPal was expensive, for a Canadian Dollar was only ``worth`` (whatever that means) about 80 cents in ``real`` money ... not about a dollar, give or take a few cents, as recently. (How often does one get to speak one`s mind ... for free ... with seldom any repercussions)! Plus ... what does one call someone who `bugs`` one (sorry - question mark doesn`t work). ole joyful

A great big WELCOME from the hot & humid Central Gulf Coast of Florida! I'm a married 65 year old retired gal-lived all but the last 12 years in northeast PA. I was in the hotel business & also owned a restaurant and did Bridal consulting & wedding cakes for 35 years.have worn an apron most of my life! Once I hung it up I was news director & airstaff on our local radio station and sales in newspaper & telecom before retiring down here. I have 3 married children, (WI, NC & PA) 3 grandsons and my 1 & only 6 yr old grandaughter-a clone of myself! (oh dear!) I keep myself busy doing home dec projects, love crossword puzzles & dancing is my favorite pastime at the places down at the beach & baking cookies, for my friends & neighbors. My favs in music are the Doobies, Eagles, BTO, Tony Bennett, Babs Streisand and Elvis, of course. Love to 'rock & roll'. Again-welcome to our family!

I was made to feel welcome from the get-go. When I first came here, I asked a question, and immediately got responses. I thought that was amazing.....no waiting, and very friendly people.

So I officially joined, and since I like to talk; well, you know.

I've not noticed anyone calling another member a newbie after the first visit. More likely, the new person will refer to themselves as that. Maybe I've missed it, but then, newbie isn't offensive to me.

So what do we call the ones that have been members for years, but rarely come around unless there's a WHOOP in the making?

I like for a new person to at least make an introduction. After that, they're a FRIEND!!

I also agree with Patti. Most people come here and introduce themselves as Newbie, or a Lurker.
I think newbie is kinda cute. Like Probie on NCIS.

I'm curious as to what prompted this post lazypup. I haven't seen anyone being treated rudely at all.

Patti and Jasdip are right - most introduce themselves and get welcomed.

He was just stating, I think, that once they are here as newbies, then after that they are KT friends.

when I first posted I said that I was a "lurker". I must say that everyone here made me feel welcomed right from the start.

I like the fact that this forum really is like sitting around a kitchen table and chatting with friends. We don't need any rules.
