Button, button, whose got the button?

Well, a craft store close to me is going out of business, and I have been buying lots of buttons from their button bin. They have this big box of buttons, and you can fill a little zip lock bag for $1.29, making the buttons about 2 to 4 cents apiece.

I knit lots of baby and toddler sweaters and one bootie pattern that use lots of buttons, and so often the buttons cost more than the yarn. This will keep me supplied for the boy sweaters as the buttons are browns and plastic tortoise shell looking for the most part. They did not have any girlie looking buttons in the box.

When my Mother cleaned out my Grand mothers house she had a garage sale and the first thing that sold was a shoe box full of buttons. Apparently my Grand mother saved the buttons from the clothes she discarded and the woman who bought it was thrilled with her 'find.'

Maire Cate, my grandmother apparently did the same thing. I have two large tins full of very old buttons. A button collector would have a field day! I'll probably never use them, but I'll never get rid of them either. :-)

Mike, it is typical for pro photographers, whether photographing flowers or photographing naked women, to take thousands of pictures just to get a handful of good shots! I read once about a National Geographic photo expedition of polar bears, the number of ROLLS of film shot was in the tens of thousands for a 6 page spread in the magazine!! These are gorgeous, the ruby-like glow of the light coming thru the first one is beautiful, especially with the green behind it ( not sure if you know that green and red are opposites on the color wheel and are very complimentary to each other ) The second one has a sort of lonely feel, and the detail is awesome. I find it amazing that digital cameras can produce such great photographs, I can't seem to get shots like this with my digital! I also have a Cannon Rebel (not the digital one) and the shots are much better, but I am one of those people who takes pictures and never gets the film developed.....5 years from now it will cost me $500 to develop the 50 or 60 rolls I have laying around, and I will go thru the pictures and be like "What the heck is that? When did I take that picture? Who are those people?" or "Oh my god look how young Morgan was...!!" etc etc Ah well, for now I will just enjoy everyone elses photos.

Imontestella, don't hesitate to buy from CFM! Almost every plant I've gotten from him, and that's quite a few over the years, have been bigger than expected, and all have been healthy. My hoya Mathilde is the only one I've gotten from him recently that died. But I think it was just too much stress from the shipping in that case, and the plant was still quite young. I had these three plants unpacked in less than 10 minutes, with no mess! They have the packing down to a science. Not so with other sellers! Takes forever to get the tape, etc. off. Yeah, I thought about you guys seeing the banana first, and thinking, "What the heck?" LOL

Word of caution - GE microwave with push button door open and trim kit

I thought I would share an update on this original posting. Timeline: -My microwave died around October 15, 2019. -First service company came October 31, 2019. -In mid-November they came back again with parts, but could not fix it. -New parts were ordered, including a long lead time control due in late-January 2020 -On January 2nd I was contacted by GE Service who offered a new microwave installed I took this new microwave option, which came with a new 1 year warranty, and it was installed on January 17th, basically 3 months after the original microwave died. Overall, very happy that GE stepped up to make this right. Service team that installed was not very good, and that is putting it kindly. I left my concerns about the service team with GE customer service who did a nice job following up on the install with a phone call. I am hopeful that this new microwave has a longer service life than the first as a broken door button is very bad news with a trim kitted install.

I have enjoyed Purple Buttons immensely, the gorgeous color of the star-like blooms, the Red Hots candy scent and the compact model size. PB has been pretty darm healthy for me until this spring. We had record breaking rain—wet, wet wet, wet! Everything that can blackspot is blackspotting. PB is no exception. The China-Bourbon rose Hermosa, normally clean Zephirine Drouhin and a couple of Hybrid Teas have been the worst! Ugh. PB is not the worst by far. I predict it will shake off the blackspot and return to good health as Portland dries out. Ordinarily, my PB’s foliage looks like the photo below. Paul’s blackspot treatment is great info, so I’m really glad you asked about PB. It’s so necessary to get the science right to protect the environment from further damage and also maintain reasonable balance our gardens. My garden is no spray, but I know that a few thoughtfully and carefully treated plants using thoughtfully and carefully chosen preventatives can make a great difference in heavy pressure climates. It might be worth trying PB no spray first. Mine was never really very diseased, even though I live up the road from Paul. This is, I think, a great example of the variance of microclimates within a region and the mysteries of the universe. It’s also worth noting that my PB has grown even healthier as it has matured...until this spring when everything exploded. I hope your PB gives you as much joy as mine gives me! I have my grandmothers' buttons, too, and I always cut off the buttons of garments before I turn them into rags or garbage. I sew a lot, and saving buttons saves a lot of money.

Just thought I would throw this in here.

Years ago I bought an old tin full of buttons. I sewed a lot back then and used some of them. One day my DGS was looking at them and he noticed something I had not.

There were some gold teeth mixed in with the buttons!

I still had them in 1984 or so, when gold was bringing big $$.

So look through those tins of buttons; don't know what you might find.

Buttons are great learning tools in kindergarten. They can be sorted by color, shape, size, whether there are two or four holes, or attached from underneath. You can make patterns with them by size, shape, color. When I taught by themes, one of my first each year was from the book Corduroy, about a bear who lost his button. Each student was given a button or could bring one from home and he/she would make up a story about what the button was on, who wore it, if it got lost what happened to it, etc. Fun times teaching and great for creativity. I love buttons!
