Button, button, whose got the button?

Well, a craft store close to me is going out of business, and I have been buying lots of buttons from their button bin. They have this big box of buttons, and you can fill a little zip lock bag for $1.29, making the buttons about 2 to 4 cents apiece.

I knit lots of baby and toddler sweaters and one bootie pattern that use lots of buttons, and so often the buttons cost more than the yarn. This will keep me supplied for the boy sweaters as the buttons are browns and plastic tortoise shell looking for the most part. They did not have any girlie looking buttons in the box.

When my Mother cleaned out my Grand mothers house she had a garage sale and the first thing that sold was a shoe box full of buttons. Apparently my Grand mother saved the buttons from the clothes she discarded and the woman who bought it was thrilled with her 'find.'

Maire Cate, my grandmother apparently did the same thing. I have two large tins full of very old buttons. A button collector would have a field day! I'll probably never use them, but I'll never get rid of them either. :-)

Susan, I'm not nearly as experienced as Kim--this is only my 3rd year of trying to grow from seed. To show you how "anything goes"--I roll up my seeds like burritos in damp paper towels and toss them in the fridge in a ziploc. Since there aren't that many seeds, they get individually potted up as they sprout. I've got seeds that were harvested in 2009 that are still sprouting, so it can take a while! Others generally take a couple months or more in the fridge to show signs of a root. Checking the seeds for signs of sprouting is a fun thing to piddle with in the evening while watching the news. The main thing to do is have fun with it--it's really entertaining to watch these little guys. It also gives you a real appreciation for what it takes to develop a marketable rose. BTW--one of the OP Blue Mist seeds has sprouted!

thank you, i think you're both right. part of the problem is that i really only appreciate it in flower (most of what i grow is not like that because Foliage is my prime interest), and i must focus on it next year so i remember to appreciate it in flower. The other problem is that i didn't know it would come to eat Chicago. Man do they get big. Quite a different thing to see a striking swath of them in the woods as you approach the entrance to Frank Cabot's Cold Spring garden("oh, sweetie, we HAVE to get one of those!"), and to fit them into a tightly packed mixed border! A whacking we shall go.....

Labrea, I've never really seen Stanwell P-love the eye! Roseleaf, I couldn't believe I'd like a Buck rose really (have a few), but Prairie Sunrise is different. I looked it up on helpmefind. Of course, I LOVE RR, might get another! Randy, SdlM looks so wonderful...might look into it too. I only have 2 old garden varieties (Henry Nevard and Baron Girod d'Lain). Saw a RdV at local rose garden yesterday...your photo was much better than what I saw (see my post re: Everytime we go to the city rose garden) Msjam2, I forgot to ask you about MMagdalene. It looks a lot like Wedding Cake to me, the coloration etc. Does it often get this way (the kind of mottled pink on white?) I love it! :0) Phyl

Mike, it is typical for pro photographers, whether photographing flowers or photographing naked women, to take thousands of pictures just to get a handful of good shots! I read once about a National Geographic photo expedition of polar bears, the number of ROLLS of film shot was in the tens of thousands for a 6 page spread in the magazine!! These are gorgeous, the ruby-like glow of the light coming thru the first one is beautiful, especially with the green behind it ( not sure if you know that green and red are opposites on the color wheel and are very complimentary to each other ) The second one has a sort of lonely feel, and the detail is awesome. I find it amazing that digital cameras can produce such great photographs, I can't seem to get shots like this with my digital! I also have a Cannon Rebel (not the digital one) and the shots are much better, but I am one of those people who takes pictures and never gets the film developed.....5 years from now it will cost me $500 to develop the 50 or 60 rolls I have laying around, and I will go thru the pictures and be like "What the heck is that? When did I take that picture? Who are those people?" or "Oh my god look how young Morgan was...!!" etc etc Ah well, for now I will just enjoy everyone elses photos.

I have my grandmothers' buttons, too, and I always cut off the buttons of garments before I turn them into rags or garbage. I sew a lot, and saving buttons saves a lot of money.

Just thought I would throw this in here.

Years ago I bought an old tin full of buttons. I sewed a lot back then and used some of them. One day my DGS was looking at them and he noticed something I had not.

There were some gold teeth mixed in with the buttons!

I still had them in 1984 or so, when gold was bringing big $$.

So look through those tins of buttons; don't know what you might find.

Buttons are great learning tools in kindergarten. They can be sorted by color, shape, size, whether there are two or four holes, or attached from underneath. You can make patterns with them by size, shape, color. When I taught by themes, one of my first each year was from the book Corduroy, about a bear who lost his button. Each student was given a button or could bring one from home and he/she would make up a story about what the button was on, who wore it, if it got lost what happened to it, etc. Fun times teaching and great for creativity. I love buttons!
