Lauren is graduating tomorrow!

I can hardly believe it! She and her friends are in Lexington on a scavenger hunt for grad night tomorrow. I'm a little worried because we're under severe thunderstorm and tornado watch till morning. Every year they have a party at the high school for seniors, it lasts all night long and they can win large prizes, like dorm room fridges, microwaves, money. They're giving away $100 to the team of 3 who gets the most items on the scavenger hunt. I just went and looked for a purple shell for them in my sea shell collection (can't be painted) and I actually found one. They have a lot of the items already.

A few years ago they came up with this idea for an all night party to keep kids safe, and not our drinking and driving. Anyway, I'm happy for her and a little sad. Last child to leave the house now. ) : My eating out and movie buddy will be leaving in the Fall.

I did get teary at each HS graduation....the speeches, etc just bring that out. Where I broke down was saying goodbye at the college dorm. With DS 1....he went to our state U less than an hour away...his first choice school. It was hard but I told him he was not allowed to come home for the first six weeks unless it was an emergency. I had heard stories of too many kids coming home every weekend and never immersing themselves in campus life and I wanted him to get involved, meet new people, and have the same experience as if he were miles away. He was rooming with best friend since toddlerhood and lots of other HS friends there as well so plenty of support. We all survived those six weeks just fine. With DS 2..our youngest...I felt somewhat guilty shoving him out of the nest since he was our homebody and the most likely to get homesick. I think he would have been happy to stay home and go to junior college, but his major was unusual and not offered by many schools and you had to take prerequisite classes freshman and soph years so off he went...12hours away not knowing a soul and a roommate from our area who never returned his "get to know you" calls and turned out to be 24! Roommate was a deadbeat and I worried all first semester about whether he could cope with everything. (Fortunately he was able to switch roommates second semester). He blossomed! He spent a semester in Bangkok. He formed a campus organization for a cause he became passionate about and works in that field today for a major non-profit. Hardest might have been DD....for 11years it was usually just the two of us going to practices and competitions for her sport. She went to school 6 hours away...I drove home alone as DH had to fly out from there for work. I sobbed all the way home. Was so distraught I missed an exit and didn't realize it for 20 minutes. I think I even pulled off to a rest stop just to cry. The upside was she loved the school, made great friends and it was a joy to see her come into her own after a not so great high school experience. She still lives there. Fast forward....they are all grown and gone....and we love having the house to ourselves!!! The boys live close by so we see them regularly, one is married. Of course we love seeing all of them and having them over and although it was an adjustment, we love the empty nest too!

Thanks Ms Glenda I am so proud of him....just think if I only have 4 years to go before they are allll done!!! Other then college....I will post pics tomorrow he was sooo proud of his clothes and hair *long big hair* none of my 3 kids got my straight hair....they so have curl it is big....Stacy

How strange that the ER didn't catch on to any heart troubles! Sorry he missed the ceremony, but very GLAD it resulted in his getting a complete workup. Keep us posted!

our one hs grad's class chose the janitor over the usual teacher or ad min, several years ago..."glen" was the glue that held the hs school together, and deserved honor...we still see him once in awhile (now retired) and he still knows dh (he was a soccer coach for awhile) my "trust" for the janitor was when the kids were in elementary school...wasn't sure about a prospective teacher for the kids...went and asked him!! told me I was correct...had them placed with a different teacher...what a difference it made!

Kath, I heard this little saying a long time ago: "Time flies, whether you're having fun or not." I know some of those years were not fun for you, but you have been a great mother to Lauren and Alex, plus hosting the foreign students. You deserve Congratulations as well as Lauren does.

I wish the best for Lauren, and I know it will an adjustment for both of you.

Kathleen, your kids grew up too fast! We will be happy to hold your hand and commiserate with you this fall when Lauren goes away to school. It's pretty tough, but only for a few days and then you realize they can and do come home to visit Congratulations to Lauren and I hope she loves college!

Congratulations to Lauren ... and to you, for the busy-ness and cares sometimes dealt with while watching and guiding as they grew.

What an opportunity for you, now - to make good use of your increased freedom. Maybe get involved with other things in the community and the world ... and quite a few of them are ones that, being not so close to home, will cause less worry and stress.

Tomorrow can be the beginning of a whole new area of life.

Good wishes for all of your days ahead.

Thanks everyone. I didn't get teary-eyed till they tossed their caps in the air, which is really good for me. We had dinner with her boyfriend, Alex and her father after but it was packed and took a little longer to get our food than normal so we had to rush and take most of our meal with us for her to make it to grad night party at the high school. They lock the doors at 11:00 and we got her there about 10 till!

Yay Lauren and congrats to her and you mom!

It is such an emotional time...I was a puddle of tears at times last Sat. when granddaughter graduated.

Her school has a great idea for the party..more should give that a try.
