Michael Fall Display

I could not believe what I saw when I went into Michaels today, they had their fall flowers out along with pumpkins, my god we are not even into summer yet next thing you know they will have the Xmas stuff out.

Seriously! Turn your head when you go by it. We have a long, hot summer to survive yet.

Some stores do have their Christmas things out. People who are crafters need the fall and Christmas items now in order to make their crafts for their upcoming shows.

The distinctions become blurred with plants like Legacy. SHB are hybrids themselves. Legacy, and South Moon and others are hardy in the colder zones too, so they are showing more of their NHB genes. I have NHB Liberty, Toro, and Chandler. I can't remember what Chandler looks like in fall? But the former two are awesome for colors, and they are good plants. I like the berries too! I have Car'a Choice, and well I have no idea what it is? These plants have been crossed and recrossed so many times.... CARA'S CHOICE is a progeny from the cross G-144 x US 165. G-144 originated from the cross 11-93 (a sibling of 'Bluecrop') x 'Darrow'. US 165 is a self of US 79, a hybrid of the diploid species Vaccinium darrowii 'Fla 4B' x US 56. US 56 originated from a cross of hexaploid V.constablaei x T-65. T-65 is a rabbiteye hybrid from the cross of 'Walker' x 11-180 (= 'Myers' x 'Black Giant'). The cross that produced CARA'S CHOICE was made by A.D. Draper at Beltsville, Maryland in approximately 1977. (note it was released in 2000). I still think it would be happier in a warmer climate, but it did do better this year over previous years. Concidently it was a MUCH hotter year than normal. Can't say that was the reason why, but something to watch over the coming years. It added almost 1" in caliper this year (almost 3/4" last year). I put my observations and photos on the net, so that others can find information that is coming from someone trying to sell you something. Plus, because when I was looking for info on several of our trees, there wasn't much beyond the standard spiel, and even that often contradicted. According to the website of the patenter, this maple is not being propagated by Greenleaf, therefore availability should improve over the next couple of years. Just same, if you REALLY want one now, check out the link below. They appear to get them on an as ordered basis. Wow. I'm in awe over your celosia! Mine with the brain-like blooms never ever grow that tall. They usually grow to about 6in and very compact... except for a couple that I sowed this year from last year's seed, but those only reached about 1ft. I like the lack of consistency with celosia. This year was full of surprise volunteers. One had deep magenta blooms and purple-green foliage and grew to 4ft before wind knocked it over. It might be a volunteer from a "Kimono Mix" plant... but it has the dark foliage and looks somewhat like a plumosa crossed with either a spicata or caracas, and it's the only one of its kind to pop up. Odd. Definitely saving those seeds!

I haven't been in Michael's but every year it gets earlier and earlier. The garden stuff is out right after Xmas . On July 5th, Halloween hits the shelves.

People who craft need those items now. I'd actually have liked for them to carry all the stuff all year long back when I did crafting for a living. Now with the Internet though, I can get anything anytime, if I need it but it's nice to not have to pay for shipping because a store has it.

Oooo I will have to get to Michaels LOL! I am already well over summer, it starts in April here in Orlando LOL, I have been looking for fall clothes already...seriously. well as fall clothes as I can get for 95 degree days till Nov :-/ this is about the earliest I think I have ever wanted fall to get here LOL! ~ liz

liz...I'm with you. I am all over summer too, and it has yet to officially start. I think Friday is the day. Hate the hot humid weather.

I have a friend who is an avid crafter, and she purchases her supplies weeks and sometimes months before the craft show, so that she can be working on them all summer. So I can understand the need for fall/Halloween supplies to be in craft stores early.
Now when department stores start displaying holiday items months in advance, THAT is what annoys me!
